Half Court Offense Drills - Principles and Actions
In today’s game of basketball, there is an emphasis on the up-tempo style of play. As opponents work to slow you down, teams must be able to win in the half-court offense. Bryan Petersen, head coach at Kirkwood Community College breaks down the finer points of his offense, which has been influenced by Creighton head coach Greg McDermott and Nebraska’s Fred Hoiberg.
Petersen won the 2016 and 2019 NJCAA DII national championships using an offense that incorporates spacing, ball movement, screening, timing, and shot selection into its half-court offense. In this half court offense drills video, Coach Petersen shows you how he does it.
Basic Motion Offense
Coach Petersen talks about proper spacing and describes that as at least 15 feet from your nearest teammate. To maintain maximum spacing, players have to learn how to respond to penetration. You will see players walk through dribble penetration movements while others react accordingly.
Spacing Drill
Spacing is important to any type of offense, but what makes Petersen’s offense different is the level of communication. Great teams communicate and Coach Petersen stresses it here making sure that his players talk while on offense.
Wing Continuity Ball Screen Offense
Cutting and filling open areas is important and Petersen builds off of these concepts incorporating ball screens from the wings. You will see Coach Petersen’s “20” wing ball screen continuity offense. The offense uses a 3-out 2-in set looking to create hard closeouts and produce middle penetration at the rim.
Coach Petersen shows you multiple options based on defensive adjustments. The offense is great for back-to-the-basket post players and there are options for the pick and pop post players. Petersen also throws in a couple of counters as defenses will eventually pick up on the offense’s pattern.
Half Court Offense Drills Breakdown
A variety of 3-on-0 drills are used to help promote strong continuity for the ball screen motion offense. Players run through various situations and adjustments. Coach Petersen incorporates more post touches and reactions in this series. Players work the 3-on-0 drills from different spots on the floor and also work on getting open when under pressure.
Set Plays
Coach Petersen also provides five set plays that are adjustments to what defenses try and do to the “20” offense.
1: Gets your shooter an open shot
25: Used against teams that hard hedge, this uses a back screen for your best finisher
Thumbs Up: Used against teams that switch ball screens, this can get a hot shooter an open look
Thumbs Down: Used to get a post touch
Cyclone and Cyclone Slip: A late-game, full-court set used to get a 3-point shot
If you are looking for more ways to break down opposing defenses, Coach Petersen’s video is for you! Rent this Half Court Offense Drills DVD today.

Eric Bridgeland
(Rental)-The Fence Offense for Basketball
$18.99
The Fence Offense
Whitman College head coach Eric Bridgeland has gone 104-14 over the past four seasons using an offense that creates space and provides plenty of easy scoring opportunities. Using the Fence Offense, Bridgeland and Whitman have gone unbeaten in conference play in each of the past two seasons. In this video, you get an inside look at how Bridgeland teaches the offense.
Spacing and Positioning in the Fence Offense
Players learn to space based off of the NBA 3-point line. Players move into the baseline corners, short corner post and on the sideline at the free throw line extended. Players are taught how to move and read as a ball handler gets downhill and into the paint. Bridgeland teaches players to attack the rim fast and furious looking to score off the dribble or hit a pitch, throw back, or post slide for an easy scoring chance. Coach Bridgeland has a “no standing zone” policy for players in between the baseline and free throw line where they are to be on the move.
Offensive Actions
Coach Bridgeland teaches a number of offensive actions. He starts with the flare screen. Players learn to over exaggerate screens to prepare them for game speed action As a ball handler attacks the paint, a weak side flare screen can set up an open 3-pointer. If not, the ball can be reversed to attack the paint again.
When flares aren’t possible, dribble hand-offs can be use on the strong side of the floor. This can open up wing players to attack the rim. Off of dribble hand-offs, players have multiple options including the following:
Catch and shoot
Catch, fake, and shoot
Catch, fake, and two-dribble attack
Throw back for a shot after a paint touch
Coach Bridgeland also shows you how to pair the flare screen with the dribble hand-off. You can use both actions together either on ball reversals or as your initial offensive action to get the ball into the paint for easy scoring opportunities.
Reads and Film
Coach Bridgeland finishes his presentation with a look at a read drill that helps players learn to read both middle and help side defenders. With the right read, players can create multiple attacking options. You will see a few game clips from previous seasons to get an idea of what the Fence Offense looks like at game speed.
Coaches looking to implement the dribble drive offense can use Coach Bridgeland’s Fence Offense to reap the same benefits, but do it with much simpler teaching. Rent this Fence Offense DVD today.

Eric Bridgeland
(Rental)-Unscoutable On-Ball Offense
$18.99
On Ball Screen Offense that's Unscoutable
Today’s basketball offenses must understand the ball screen. In this presentation, Whitman College head coach Eric Bridgeland shows you how to teach your players on ball screen offense recognition and reads in an effort to increase the number of easy scoring opportunities. Bridgeland is the 2018 HoopDirt.com Division III Coach of the Year after leading Whitman to its second consecutive unbeaten conference record. In four seasons at Whitman, Bridgeland is 104-14. A big reason why the Blues have won so often is Bridgeland’s system of offense.
On Ball Screen Offense Philosophy
The idea of the offense is to create scoring opportunities as close to the basket as possible. Ball screens are the best way to get the ball into the paint and close to the basket. Coach Bridgeland teaches his players how to run, get into the paint, and apply constant pressure to defenses. Ball screens create the offensive action, which gives players extra incentive as they are the ones applying the ball screens.
On Ball Screen Offense Guard Play
There are a number of ways that defenses attack ball screen offenses: hard show, soft show, switches, and icing the ball handler. Coach Bridgeland teaches his guards how to attack each when coming off of a screen. Using 2-on-2 drills, guards learn to change their speed as they approach the screen. They can look to square up just as they pass the screener creating some misdirection. Guards can also get low using a bulldog drive into the paint. Whatever they do, your players can create advantages to get to the paint.
On Ball Screen Offense Post Play
Coach Bridgeland teaches his post players how to set solid screens and keep appropriate spacing. Posts learn how to pop off a screen if they have the range to help spread a defense. Posts also learn to roll to the basket by going wide outside the lane line. This allows the ball handler to continue attacking the rim and get to the paint.
Bridgeland uses a 1-on-1 drill to teach post players how to set the screen and then read the help side defender and react off of him. Coach Bridgeland’s presentation ends with 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 drills where players learn to read screens at game speed. These drills help Bridgeland control the practice environment and help players adjust to the faster pace of game action.
If you are looking to complement your offense with balls screens, this 81-minute video can help you master the concept. Coach Bridgeland can teach you how to open up a number of scoring opportunities using ball screens. Rent this On Ball Screen Offense DVD today.

(Rental)-Offensive Success vs a Switching Man to Man Defense
$18.99
Craig Doty: Offensive Success vs a Switching Man-to-Man Defense
Teams playing against an unfamiliar defense often run into trouble. For coaches who go up against a switching man-to-man, this change-up can cause some serious headaches. Craig Doty, head coach at 2018 NAIA Division I national champion Graceland University (IA), shows you how you can gain an advantage against this type of switching man-to-man defense.
Doty, the 2018 NAIA Division National Coach of the Year, also won two NJCAA Division III championships and was a two-time National Junior College Coach of the Year. In this video, he shares with you a number of useful plays that work not only against switching man-to-man defenses, but also straight up man and zone defenses. He explains each play giving you the exact spacing and timing needed. Coach Doty also explains how to take advantage of certain mismatches as they occur and also how to use analytics to improve in practices and games.
Regular Man-to-Man vs. Switching Man-to-Man
To take advantage of man defenses that switch, Coach Doty first demonstrates a variety of plays against a straight man-to-man. Then, he shows you the same plays against a switching man-to-man. From a Horns set, “Pro 1” begins with a pass into the post and a dive to the basket by the point guard. Instead of an open jumper or a feed into the post against straight man, the switching man defense generates a seal by the post for a high-low duck-in pass.
“Pro 3” is another play run from the Horns set used to set up a help-side down screen on an entry to the elbow. Against a switching man defense, the high-low entry to the screening post player result’s in an interior mismatch that leads to easy baskets.
Utilizing Early Offense
Switching man-to-man defenses can cause problems in transition. Coach Doty uses post and wing interchanges and dribble handoffs to create mismatches and exploit the switches. “Harvard” and “Cross” are actions by wings that can lead to easy baskets.
Sets vs. 2-3 Zone
Switch principles can still apply in a 2-3 zone. You will see how down screens and flare screens are used to create open 3-point shots. “Bulldog” leads to open opportunities to the get the ball inside to a post player. “Flood” is another play designed to take advantage of the zone defense.
Using Analytics
Coach Doty takes some time to cover how his team uses analytics. The numbers can often tell you who should be on the floor and who should not. You can also use them to explain to players why they are successful or unsuccessful.
All the plays and actions shown in Coach Doty’s video are used to create opportunities for offenses to attack defenses that switch. What he reveals is a must for anyone looking to expand their playbook and handle uncommon defenses.

To win basketball games, you must get the ball in the paint. To get to the key, you can create open threes and high-percentage shots. This will also allow teams to reach the free throw line. An offense can usually get there via the drive or post touch. This video will be shown by Coach Matt Figger. It focuses on the modern 2-Game offense, which focuses on getting the ball onto the paint through post touches while keeping the floor spread.
These are the options and sets that make up 2-Game. They will show you how to put it into practice right away.
You'll learn:
Basic setup
Options for perimeter and post
Plays
You will need to do all the necessary drills!
Overview and Introduction to 2-Game
Coach Matt Figger shares his reflections on the lessons learned as coaches during the COVID pandemic. He also explains how coaches have been able to learn from this experience and find ways to improve their effectiveness.
Figger has modified the offense in response to analytics regarding the effectiveness of 3-point shots, points in the paint and guard drive time.
Coach Figger demonstrates how the 2-Game Offense can help you be a more efficient post team, even when you don't have large players. This offense has many screen reads and cuts, making it difficult to monitor and very challenging to guard well. It also opens up the doors to great opportunities!
2Game Options
Next Coach Figger will go over the nuts and bolts and each player's responsibilities and positioning. He demonstrates the proper setup to reach the correct spots and spacing for the offense. Coach Figger shows the post players how to use the ball to gain an advantage in paint regardless of how defense defends it.
The offense's goal is to create 2-man games within the offensive flow. If the ball isn't directly entered into the post Coach Figger shows how to maintain pressure on the defense with a 2-man game at the perimeter and screen at the elbow. The cutter can choose to curl, fade or reject the ball. Each option is described in detail, along with how each player reacts to it.
If everything is covered, Coach Figger shows you how to flow into an on ball screen to keep the attacking mentality going. The Pinch Post option can be a great way to keep the defense honest. Coach Figger then shows how to seamlessly flow into DHOs or ball screens straight out of the set. If 2-Game's cutter rejects the screen, Coach Figger will show how to maintain pressure by adding another option for post-up and a baseline stagger in order to create perimeter shots.
Ball Screens
Coach Figger loves to use ball screens in his offense. He shows how to keep things moving when there is a 2-Game breakdown. There are several options for running the ball screen: offensive rebounds, hitting the post again and back out, and any other breakdown in any of these actions.
Drills
Coach Figger demonstrates drills to help you develop your guards and posts in order to complete the 2-Game offense. He demonstrates to the posts his philosophy of getting under the defense and posting up in transition. He shows them how to manage two transition players and works on getting high-low looks. Drills can be used to remove guards from the elbow screening actions.
Players will learn how to get the ball in by putting everything together in a 4-on-4 drill. While everyone goes through the basics of offense, the post player starts with an offensive advantage.
Sets and Games
Coach Figger wraps it all by describing a drill that he uses to learn how to play fast in the "150" game. Players will be taught how to move the ball quickly and make quick decisions.
Coach Figger then demonstrates two ball screen plays, which can be used in the offense or as stand-alone plays. He also shows you how to seamlessly transition into 2-Game, regardless of whether the ball is passed ahead or dribbled. The whiteboard diagram of one his favorite zones sets is then completed.
Do you want to control the pace and get the ball inside? This offense is great for that, and Coach Matt Figger will give you all the tools necessary to run the Modern 2-Game Offense.
