Transition Offense Into the 4-Out 1-In Motion Offense
University of Cincinnati head coach John Brannen has built all of his teams’ identities on playing fast on offense and having a constant attack mentality. Brannen led Northern Kentucky to the NCAA tournament in the school’s first year of eligibility. Now at Cincinnati, Brannen uses the same pace and space concepts that have produced a ton of wins.
In this transiition offense video, Coach Brannen shows you how to build an aggressive, fast-paced transition offense. It all starts on the defensive end.
Transition Offense Philosophy
At the core of what Brannen believes on offense is a simple three-word mantra: Sprint, Space, and Share. Teams have to embrace playing fast in transition and in the half-court offense. Anytime a player is in doubt, all he has to remember is sprint the floor, space properly, and share the basketball.
Brannen uses metrics for certain drills and in games to help improve transition decisions and success. He shows you how a few key stats can help improve shot selection. He also goes through which players have the “license” to shoot three-pointers in games.
The whole idea is to mold the transition offense so that players better understand their roles in it. Doing so will help everyone be more successful in transition.
Setting Up Transition Offense
On a missed shot, the ball can only be brought up the floor by what Brannen calls “bust out guys.” These are players with a certain assist-to-turnover ratio. Any player not designated a bust out guy must outlet the ball to someone who is to bring the ball up the floor in transition.
Brannen’s fast break isn’t numbered either like traditional breaks. Each spot must be filled though and players learn each of the spots to be filled. To teach transition, Coach Brannen uses the Coach Izzo Break Drill. This works on sprinting up the sideline and getting layups, post-ups, and three-point shots in transition.
Building the Offense
The foundation of the offense begins with half-court penetrate and pitch drills, which come from former Oklahoma City head coach Billy Donovan. The drills are designed to attack the paint and kick the ball out for open three-pointers.
With proper spacing and movement, the offense begins to heat up. From there Coach Brannen continues to build out a fast-paced motion offense that runs smoothly even after the transition attack has ended. Rent this transition offense DVD today.
Travis Steele

Open Practice: Transition Offense, Spread Attack & Skill Development
Xavier University has remained an elite Big East program under head coach Travis Steele who spent seven seasons as an assistant with the Musketeers helping to guide the program to eight NCAA tournament appearances and the 2017 Elite Eight. In this video, you will learn to play the up-tempo motion offense that Steele employs at Xavier.
In addition, you will see effective practice drills for handling pressure and for developing low post play. Coach Steele shares some of his favorite baseline inbound plays and a strategy for creating a number of options off a single play simply by rearranging player assignments.
Transition Offense
Coach Steele shows you two different strategies for attacking with fast break. “Carolina” is the transition offense used after made baskets. It is a more structured approach where players have specific responsibilities and play as fast and as spaced as possible.
After a miss, the “Phoenix” break is used to attack the floor with spacing. It puts pressure on the defense with rim runs, drives, and pick and rolls. The “Run the Circuit” drill is shown as well. It can help you run through all of the options in this transition system.
Spread Offense
In the half-court, Steele’s teams don’t simply slow down. You will see Coach Steele’s motion offense at work. It spaces the floor with four perimeter players to create driving lanes. There is plenty of ball and player movement as well as cuts, dribble hand-offs, and brush screens.
“Flip” action incorporates the low post into a ball screen at any spot on the floor. You’ll see how to communicate the different actions to players on the floor. Coach Steele also shows you how to add weak-side actions into your ball screens to occupy help defenders.
Coach Steele shows you different drills to work on the offense. 2-on-2 Ball Screen teaches players to beat their defender and draw help. The 4-on-4 drill challenges ball handlers to make correct decisions based on defensive rotations.
Skill Development
In the final phase of the video, Coach Steele shows five drills to develop how players handle pressure and play through the low post. Two Feet in the Paint works on the partnership between guards and posts. Baseline Finishes teaches posts to relocate and finish strong on dribble penetration. Around the Horn Passing works on passing and catching under pressure.
Coach Steele does a great job of showing you the fast break, an up-tempo offense, and how to develop players so they can handle pressure.
Ed Cooley

$18.99
Ed Cooley: Secondary & Transition Offense
Ed Cooley’s Providence teams are consistently one of the top scoring teams in the Big East Conference thanks to an aggressive, attacking style of offense. Coach Cooley led the Friars to the 2014 Big East Tournament championship and has taken his team to the last five straight NCAA tournaments.
In this video, Coach Cooley breaks down how he transitions into a fast, physical, and connected offense from the instant his team gets a rebound. He will show you how to build an offense that attacks after made baskets as well in an effort to continually pressure opponents. You also get access to a couple key practice drills that can help you perfect your transition offense.
Transition Offense to Attack
Coach Cooley begins with some great detail about planning to attack all sorts of defenses. In order to attack and keep the pressure on an opponent, your offense must be prepared for any look that it may see. Coach will break down his Laser/Roadrunner organized fast break, the terminology used to give each player a role in the break, and what area of the floor each player should occupy. There will be multiple options for baseline drives or kickouts. Coach also shows you how to hit a runner in the middle of the floor and how to move the ball to get an open shot.
In order to attack off the break, Cooley emphasizes the following:
How to isolate and position your big man in transition
How to deal with defenses that switch
Multiple ways to flow seamlessly into the secondary break
The Secondary Break
One of the least-utilized facets of the basketball offense is the secondary break. Teams can continue to attack opponents with an aggressive secondary break game. Coach Cooley gets into using multiple ball screens with a number of options off of each set. This helps give coaches and players a wealth of information they can use to create mismatches, 2-on-1 advantages, and easy 3-point shots by your team’s best shooters.
Cooley also gets into how to reach players today, build their confidence, and get them to buy-in to your program. This 53-minute video is insightful and informative and can help you transition your team into one that is more efficient and effective. Rent this Transition Offense DVD today.

Transition & Dribble Drive Offense
With over 1,000 career wins at Virginia’s Oak Hill Academy, coach Steve Smith has become a master at teaching his players how to play the game. He can do the same for you in this Dribble Drive Offense video which helps you simplify your man-to-man offense and teach players to be playmakers rather than play-runners.
Coach Smith is a four-time USA Today National Coach of the Year and has coached nine Oak Hill teams to national championships. His ability to teach players the game and increase their basketball IQ has led many of them to college basketball scholarships. In this video, you will see how Coach Smith teaches players to read the game based on ball position, how to run and make decisions in the dribble drive offense and a number of out of bounds plays that can be run at any level.
Dribble Drive Offense
As the game grows, the dribble drive offense has become a staple for many because of its ability to allow very good players attack the rim. It is an offense that is extremely hard to prepare for and even harder to defend. Coach Smith details how he teaches the Dribble Drive offense and uses on-court demonstration to show you three formations and actions like screening and pitch backs that create scoring opportunities.
Coach Smith also shows you how to get post players involved with a flat screen option where a post player can roll or pop out for an open shot. Spacing is another concept that is reviewed as it is important in getting your offense layup after layup in the Dribble Drive.
Teaching Transition Offense
The best teams are complete and have the ability to excel in transition. Here, Smith explains and demonstrates how he teaches transition offense. The best way to do so is through the use of a competitive scrimmage. He starts with the fast break off of a free throw. The ball is pushed up the floor and then Coach Smith offers three basic sets that all of his players know. His players are taught to read the defense and use the appropriate set – Dribble, Dribble 2, or Dribble 3.
Out of Bounds Plays for Basketball
Coach Smith shares with you five different out of bounds that are designed to result in easy scoring opportunities. You will see options that utilize picking the picker to allow post players to get free for easy layups. Other screening actions look to free up guards for drives to the basket or for easy pull up jump shots.
If there is one thing Coach Smith has learned in 30 years of coaching, it is that players need to understand how to play the game. This 65-minute video is an excellent way to get that process started. Rent this Dribble Drive Offense DVD today.

Winning with a Hybrid Princeton Offense
Former Williams College and Marist University head coach Mike Maker was very successful using a hybrid style Princeton offense. His Williams teams made four appearances in the NCAA Division III Elite Eight, three in the Final Four, and finished as the runner-up twice.
In this video, Coach Maker shares his offensive philosophy and his strategies for attacking man-to-man defense. His ideas are built around the old Princeton offense.
After discussing philosophy, Coach Maker goes into detail on the use of pivots, reverse pivots, and passing the basketball. The on-court demonstration continues with a “20-on-2” Shooting drill that forces players to score in a timed situation.
The offense is taught in 3-on-0 and 4-on-0 situations and finally tying everything together in a 5-on-0 setting. All of the basic fundamentals are put into play here. His Princeton style offense emphasizes quick slips, ball screens, pick and pops, post ups, and back cuts.
In addition, Coach Maker shows you how you can use two good post players in this system. He does go into some defense and how he develops it, but the primary concepts in the video are on developing the offense.
Coaches looking to enhance their man-to-man offense can benefit from the tips offered by Coach Maker on screening and cutting. It’s an excellent presentation of how a modern offense can use old school ideas to succeed.

Dwane Casey: Training Camp Defense Drills
While many great players are known for their offensive skills, the best of the best spend a great deal of time working on the basic fundamentals of defense. In this video, you have the opportunity of learning from one of the NBA’s great defensive minds, Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey. As an assistant with Dallas in 2011, Casey helped the Mavericks win an NBA title. That helped him earn the head coaching job in Toronto where Casey is the career leader in wins.
In this defense drills video, you will see Casey lead the Toronto Raptors through nine training camp drills focused on individual and team defense. Learn Coach Casey’s methods for keeping the ball out of the paint and how to communicate different coverages.
Defense Drills for Individual Development
The most basic of defensive skills cannot be overlooked. Coach Casey demonstrates three closeout drills with five variations that help players perfect the closeout technique. The drills teach players to use a “no middle” defensive stance on the wing. Players learn the run off and recover tactic to deny a great shooter and how to rotate with the X call to cover shooters in a dribble penetration situation.
Casey continues with a few more drills that progress from the closeout technique and incorporate defending the ball off the dribble, challenging shots without fouling, and boxing out to prevent offensive rebounds. Coach Casey demonstrates the Mine Drill where players are put into a 4-on-3 disadvantage and are forced to scramble. The drill develops a ‘never quit’ mentality.
Defense Drills for Team Development
Coach Casey gets into the Raptors defensive philosophy in the next few drills. The 3-Line Closeout Drill simulates the Blue technique used against side ball screen and the Weak technique used against high ball screens. Casey breaks down the details of both coverages, including the terminology Toronto used to communicate. One variation of the drills shows how you can switch with your post players using a Pull It strategy.
Two more drills teach players how to beat the dribble hand-off, how to use Blue on pinch post action, and how to defeat the wide pin-down. You will see three more drills that review a number of both offensive and defensive concepts.
See how the Raptors warm up with a Five-Man Weave Drill. The 2-on-1 Finishing Drill serves multiple purposes including teaching players to score at the rim as well as helping defensive players protect the basket.
Coach Casey draws on his years of experience at the highest level of the game to present these simple but powerful drills that can develop the defensive habits you need to take your program to the next level. Rent this defense drills DVD today.

King Rice: Transition Offense and Secondary Break Attacks
Having honed his skills as a player under the legendary Dean Smith, King Rice has taken what he learned at North Carolina and developed a wide-open transition offense that has allowed him to be successful as a coach at Monmouth University. Rice coached the 2016 MAAC regular season champion and was rewarded with the MAAC’s Coach of the Year honor.
In this video, the former Tar Heels point guard uses on-court demonstrations to show you the basic drills and secondary break actions that will help your program put pressure on opposing defenses by setting up multiple scoring opportunities. Coach Rice will show you how to create opportunities to score in the transition game while, at the same time, empowering players to make instant adjustments.
Basic Transition Offense Drills
Coach Rice goes back to his early playing career and starts with the basic drills he learned. The drills are designed to work on the fundamentals of shooting, passing, rebounding, catching, running the floor, and finishing at the rim. These are the fundamentals necessary to succeed using the transition offense. Once the basics have been taught, Rice then goes into how you can adapt the offense to the strengths of your players.
The Secondary Break
Once the primary break is explained, Coach Rice demonstrates how to use the secondary break and its options to beat a defense that is still trying to get set. Rice will show you how to disguise your intentions on the secondary break using the same set. When your players become comfortable with the options, they can make their own calls and reads in transition to take advantage of a defense.
The first option is to get the ball inside. The transition offense finishes with a rear screen for the trailer for an attempted lob pass. Rice also shows you how to run off of a free throw using “Invert,” a play in which the trailer sets a down screen instead of receiving a rear screen.
Secondary Break Variations and Counters
Where Coach Rice’s presentation really has value is in the variations off of the secondary break. One different option is to counter a big man who has trouble posting up. A double drag ball screen is used in transition with one big rolling to the basket and the other popping out to the perimeter.
Other variations show how Rice gives point guards freedom to make calls against things they see defensively. As a former point guard, Rice understands how a well-coached point can create and provide multiple scoring opportunities not only for himself but for his teammates as well.
Rice’s 80-minute video gives you a look at a unique way of playing the transition offense. It will provide your best players more scoring opportunities and have your offense putting up bigger numbers.
