Johnny Jones: Transition Drills and Early Offense
Fast-paced basketball has become extremely popular not only for fans to watch, but for players as well. In order to play fast, teams must practice fast. In this video, Texas Southern head coach Johnny Jones shares with you a package of drills designed to get players to play fast. The drills develop the individual skills, conditioning, and the mindset needed to play an up-tempo style of basketball. It’s a style of play that helped Jones to five straight 20-win seasons and two Sun Belt championships while he was at North Texas from 2007-2011.
Teaching Players to Get the Ball Up the Court
Coach Jones uses two drills – 80 Layups in Two Minutes and the 3-Man Weave Wide – to teach players to push the ball up the floor for easy scoring opportunities. Players learn how to space the floor properly in a fast break situation and how to stay alert and reactive while playing fast.
Offensive and Defensive Breakdown Drills
Playing fast means doing so at both ends of the court. Coach Jones uses on-court demonstration to show you five drills that will increase your players conditioning levels as well as teach an attacking, fast-paced style of play. Drills include:
Zig-Zag Drill: Players work on creating pressure on the basketball while working on ball handling against pressure.
Triangle Trap Drill: Players learn to pass while under pressure to get easy scoring opportunities. Defensive players learn to trap, read a trap, and create a turnover.
3-on-2, 2-on-1 Drill: Teaches players to learn to score in an advantage situation. Defenders learn to get back in transition and stop easy scores.
The Primary and Secondary Break
Coach Jones’ Touch and Go Drill teaches players how to run the five lanes in the fast break. Watch as he teaches players to look for the ball in transition. Jones then shows you how to run an effective secondary break when the primary break is no longer an option. You will see his pressure release offense which is designed to score quickly before a defense can get set up.
Coach Jones demonstrates the secondary break in a 5-on-0 setting first and then transitions to 5-on-5. He shows you various options of the secondary break against a live defense. These options include:
A weak-side stagger screen
A weak-side pin down screen
A high post flash
Post X-cuts ending with a side pick and roll
Everything you need to effectively install an up-tempo style of play is offered in this outstanding video by Coach Jones.

Early Transition Offense
In the early 1990s, no college team got more fast and easy points than the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. In this video, Dave Rice, a former UNLV player and head coach, breaks down the fast break and early transition offense that came from legendary UNLV head coach Jerry Tarkanian. Rice played on the 1990 Runnin’ Rebels team that won a national championship using transition and early offense to score points by the bunches.
Breakdown of Transition Offense
Before Coach Rice takes you on the floor he explains the how and why behind the UNLV fast break. He breaks down why the ball is pushed up the floor and he shows you how to attack the weakest areas of transition defense (post players that jog back on defense).
Coach Rice then takes you on the floor to guide you through shooting and transition drills that are used every day as part of the teaching progression. In each shooting drill, the emphasis is on getting game-like shots. Coach Rice shows you how to modify the drill to fit your own transition offense. You will also see how to add actions like back door cuts, post play action, and how to fill on the perimeter.
Drills for Attacking the Defense in Transition Offense
Next up is the Nugget Drill which is used to train players to push the ball up the floor and attack the defense. The purpose is to get the best possible shot in the open court. Players learn to attack defenders head-on in 2-on-1, 3-on-2, 4-on-3, and 5-on-4 situations in the full-court.
The heart of the presentation is when Coach Rice shows you his basic transition offense set and how that leads into any of his half-court offenses. They are all easy to learn and implement. They include:
Basic Package: Use a rip screen to get shooters open and a baseline screen to allow entry into the post
Reverse: Set up your best shooters for good looks from behind the 3-point arc while other cuts create easy scoring opportunities
Flash: Posts get in on the action early and initiate the flow of the offense from the high post
Each progression provides an opportunity for each player on the floor. Coach Rice emphasizes that each player must sprint to fill their spot in transition and make every cut count because it could be a scoring opportunity.

Mike Dunlap: Transition Offense – The First 6 Seconds
Mike Dunlap is a coaching veteran that has been around the block. He won two NCAA Division II national titles at Metro State, served as a Division I assistant at schools like Arizona and Oregon, and spent time as the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA.
One of Dunlap’s core beliefs is that the first six seconds of the shot clock can determine the outcome of your offensive possession. In this video, Coach Dunlap shows you how to make those six seconds count.
First, Coach Dunlap shares some thoughts on how to motivate players to attack the basket in transition. Going onto the court, Dunlap goes into great detail on the Three R’s of effective transition basketball.
Run out
Read
React
You will see how to get the ball out of the net and push it up the floor as fast as possible. Doing so puts enormous pressure on a defense and helps to control the aggressive of an opposing defense. Coach Dunlap’s explanations and techniques are extremely easy to understand and follow.
Next, Coach Dunlap gets into concepts such as spacing. When running in transition, it is imperative that players use proper spacing and accelerate through the dead corners on the wings. This is also the point where Dunlap points out the importance of positive reinforcement. Coaches can build stronger, smarter, and more confident players using positive reinforcement.
Since playing an up-tempo style of offense requires a well-conditioned team, Coach Dunlap shares some ideas on how to prepare your players. You will see a three-lane running drill that helps players get a feel for running the floor hard. The Blitz Drill helps to train players to maximize their scoring opportunities by reacting quickly but not hurriedly to defensive pressure. Both drills are done at a high tempo and serve as conditioning exercises as well.
This video is a gem that will help coaches communicate better with their players, instill a higher level of confidence, and teach players how to move more aggressively up the floor on offense.
