Offensive Basketball Drills for Man to Man Offense

Use the offensive drills on the DVDs to build your offense during practice.  Practice shooting drills that replicate actions in your offense.  For example, if you pass and screen away in your offense, make that a shooting drill where a player passes and screens away.  The player getting screened for would get a shot and the player that screened would get a shot.  Both players would get shots that would come to them in the offense based on their action.  This way players learn the offense and what reads to make and then what actions to take.

1 on 1 offensive basketball drills are important for players to develop good offensive skills that will give them confidence to attack in real games.  The more 1 on 1 reps you can give your players the more they will feel comfortable trying to score in games.

3 on 3 are good offensive drills to do as well because players will get more touches of the ball and your weaker offensive players will be forced to get into the action and not defer to the stronger players. Rent our Offensive Basketball Drills DVDs and coach offense like a Pro.

Team Drills For Offensive Skill Development by Don Showalter Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Don Showalter (Rental)-Team Drills For Offensive Skill Development $17.99
Team Drills for Offensive Skill Development Maximize your entire team’s skill development with over 20 drills from Don Showalter, long-time head coach at Iowa City (IA) High School. Showalter also served as coach of Team USA U16 and U17 national teams from 2009 to 2014 and won six gold medals. In this video, Coach Showalter shows coaches how to train players regardless of the facilities or limited coaching resources. You will see drills he used with the USA U16 and U17 national teams that will improve everything from dribbling and passing to screening and shooting. Footwork Drills All of Coach Showalter’s footwork drills begin with a warmup series and include the “Line Drill” series. The idea is to establish a strong base below the waist and ensure balance in an effort to create space against a defender. Coaches will see a full-court drill reminiscent of legendary UCLA coach John Wooden. Players work on the jump stop, pivots, getting open with a V-cut, a pullup jumper, securing the ball on a rebound, and tipping the ball with both hands. To maximize reps, Coach Showalter developed a series of 15 Line Drills that work on improving in different areas of the game. Players learn to make strong passes with their weak hand, for example. Three of the drills work on teaching players to set and use on-ball and off-ball screens. Shooting Drills Shooting technique is the focus of Oiler Shooting Series, Box Drills, and the 30-Second Drills. Players work on shooting from distance as well as finishing at the rim. The Oiler Drill teaches players to pull up and shoot under control from different spots on the floor. Players can also incorporate pivots, fakes, and more to vary the shots taken. The Box Drills teach players to use seven different yet effective scoring moves from the high post. The 30-Second Drills – there are six total – get players to compete and improve to new levels. The Superman Drill is one that trains players to aggressively chase rebounds and then be explosive at the rim. All of Coach Showalter’s concepts can be incorporated with the Cut Throat Drill from former NBA coach Dick Motta. Learn how to emphasize different offensive concepts while your players work on developing their skills in game-like competition. Coach Showalter’s video is great for any coach looking to improve his players’ basic fundamental basketball skills.

Offensive Player Improvement by Sean Miller Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Sean Miller (Rental)-Offensive Player Improvement $15.99
Coach Miller's philosophy for player improvement can be summarized into four key points. Have a plan, create a conditioning element and practice it. Make footwork the foundation of your improvement. Miller illustrates drills that focus on skills off the catch and off the dribble. Larry Brown is responsible for the explosion sequence off the catch. For the catch drills to be successful, it is essential to create space and a triple threat position. Miller shows the body-to-body side drive and strong side drive from the move. Miller emphasizes the importance of playing straight when driving to the hoops. Another skill in this series is the perimeter drive to low-post play. The second phase is off the dribble. Six two-ball drills for dribbling are shown and are the best to strengthen the weak hand. In the full court, crossover and inside/out are crucial skills. The toughness series simulates the game and includes carryover and a conditioning component. These drills are quick and intense, including the Mikan drill, tip drills, and footwork drills. Miller stresses that the cement is for the inside foot and the kickstand is for the outside foot. Baseline finishes are designed to prepare post players for quick catch and scoring in the post. The toughness series' final two drills are the X drill and one on one in the post. 71 minutes. 2007.

Matthew McCall: My Favorite Pick & Roll Drills by Matthew McCall Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Matthew McCall (Rental)-Matthew McCall: My Favorite Pick & Roll Drills $18.99
To have success in today’s modern basketball, you have to understand the pick and roll. If there is one thing UMass head coach Matthew McCall knows, it’s the pick and roll. After spending ten years working with Billy Donovan at Florida, McCall understands the ins and outs of the spread pick and roll. In this video, he shares the basics of the offense and how to use it in transition and flow right into your half-court offense. Philosophy First, Coach McCall shares what makes a good spread pick and roll offense. Post players that can shoot from outside and have the ability to pass is a great place to start. This pulls defenders away from the rim. Another element is having guards that can read screens and that can deliver great passes. Transition and Game Situations A strong transition game is important in running the spread pick and roll. McCall wants his players to push the ball down the floor and get the ball to the paint. He then goes into the two basic actions his team uses to flow from transition into the spread pick and roll. The first is 5 Drag where the 5-man trails instead of the 4. They go right into a drag screen and force defenders to go over top of the screen. In Double to Special, both post players trail. This allows the offense to use a double drag screen and open the paint for a roller. Half-Court Offense There are numerous options in the spread pick and roll. The two that McCall highlights in this video are Special and Lift. Special is where post players get to the lane line extended and look to create a screen opportunity. Lift gives multiple scoring opportunities especially if you have a 4 that can shoot and a 5 that is a strong pick and roll player. If you have been searching for more about the spread pick and roll, this video from Coach McCall is a must-have. From philosophy to various actions, Coach McCall shows you how to run the spread pick and roll effectively.
Offense & Skill Development by David Richman Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
David Richman (Rental)-Offense & Skill Development $18.99
Open Practice: Offense & Skill Development In six seasons as the head coach at North Dakota State University, Dave Richman has led the Bison to three NCAA tournament bids, three Summit League conference tournament titles, and a pair of regular season championships. In this video, Coach Richman shares how he applies an attention to detail and an emphasis on fundamentals to his practices. Warm Up & Fundamental Drills 5-4-3 Passing is a drill where players get up and down the floor, starting slow, and then learning to catch the ball with two hands away from the body. It’s a drill that teaches a fundamental skill and warms up the body. Coach Richman gets players to slow down in order to focus on fundamentals. Too many athletes want to go too fast right from the start. Post Feeds is a drill where players move slowly to over-emphasize pass fakes and get the ball inside. Passing and Catching is another where players learn to change speeds within their cuts and catch with two hands. Players learn to play fast and secure the ball reducing the number of turnovers. The 4-on-5 Passing drill puts everything together in the half-court. The defense applies pressure with one player acting as a free safety. The offense must complete 10 passes using all of the concepts taught in the earlier drills. It’s a great way to teach making strong cuts, moving with and without the ball, and being strong with the ball. Offensive Skill Development: Breakdown & Shooting Workout Players are taught to attack the rim using a variety of methods. Coach Richman emphasizes “go up on two, finish on two” so that players protect the ball against contact. Players work on attacking the baseline, middle, or on a post entry and finishing at the rim against contact. Any great offense must have great shooters. Building the shooter starts with building great form closer to the basket. In the middle of practice, Coach Richman slows his players down and they focus on catching, finding the rim, and holding their follow-through to create good, consistent shooting habits. Richman also shows a number of shooting drills like 3s in 5 Minutes where players focus on footwork and shooting off of the pass in an effort to improve their range. Star Shooting forces players to mentally focus on where they will move to next. Coach Richman has built a solid program at NDSU and has done so by paying attention to the details. His players play with great fundamentals and minimize the number of mistakes they make. This video examines how he does it. Rent this offense skill development DVD today.

Post Entry Methods & Accompanying Offensive Tactics by Mark Few Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Mark Few (Rental)-Post Entry Methods & Accompanying Offensive Tactics $18.99
Post Entry Methods and Accompanying Offensive Tactics One of the most overlooked options in modern basketball offense is the ability to work inside out, which begins with getting the ball into the post. Gonzaga head coach Mark Few, the 2017 AP Coach of the Year, addresses this in this new video. Coach Few has transformed the Gonzaga program into a national power taking the Bulldogs to 19 straight NCAA tournaments that includes seven Sweet Sixteen trips, two Elite Eights, and a national championship game appearance in 2017. In this post entry video, Coach Few shows you how you can utilize the post player in transition. The Gonzaga head coach will show you how to start from the ground up in using post players in the fast break offense. Your players will develop the ability to recognize post opportunities in transition and how to put both post players and guards in the best possible scoring positions. Entry Methods A post play video is simply not complete without a number of different sets and entry strategies. Coach Few presents a variety of sets and varied entries to get the ball into the post for a high percentage scoring opportunity. He will show you how these various sets and entries can repeatedly frustrate opposing defenses. Coach Few’s goal is to help the development of both perimeter and post players. He does so by teaching the following in this segment: How to utilize the offense off the post to get a high percentage shot for any player on the floor. How post play can alter an opponent’s game strategy beyond just post defense. The most effective ways to punish a defense that pressures or double teams the post. Movement after a Post Entry One of the cornerstones of Coach Few’s offensive philosophy is working from inside out. As the presentation continues, Few will show you the kinds of offense that can be created after a pass into the post. You will see a number of options available depending upon the reaction of the defense. One of the most common reactions is for defenses to double team the post. Coach Few offers you plays to counter this double team. As an added bonus, there is a question-and-answer session with Coach Few. Here, he shares ideas on how to teach post skills to any player on your team. He also shows you how to maximize post play against a zone and he shares some ideas about the intangibles that he and his staff look for when recruiting players. 1 On 1 Exercises To Improve Individual Skills by Will Wade Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Will Wade (Rental)-1 On 1 Exercises To Improve Individual Skills $18.99
Will Wade: 1-on-1 Exercises to Improve Individual Skills The best coaches help their players develop the necessary skills to be a playmaker on the basketball floor. That is exactly what LSU head coach Will Wade does in this video. He shares 10 different 1-on-1 practice drills that work on skill development on both sides of the ball. The drills help individual players develop as a complete basketball player. Coach Wade knows a thing or two about competing. He is a former VCU assistant and head coach where he led the Rams to the 2011 Final Four and to the 2016 Atlantic 10 championship. Wade uses 1-on-1 drills as much as possible to create a competitive atmosphere in practice, force players to work on their overall game, and to expose weaknesses and build confidence in his players. Competitive 1-on-1 Drills Coach Wade’s 1-on-1 drills cover a number of different teaching points. They can be used on a daily basis and can be customized to emphasize offense or defense or to fit to a certain team. Wade likes to give the offense a slight advantage in some of the drills to teach players how to finish at the rim. The drills also force defenders to hustle to stop a would-be driver. Coach Wade also includes a couple drills that focus on post play. The entire team is involved in learning how to maximize scoring chances. Posts learn to keep good position and seal defenders on ball reversals. Perimeter players learn how to quickly and easily feed the post. All of the 1-on-1 drills work both sides of the ball, but Coach Wade does have a few that give special emphasis to defense. Those drills include: Alley Ball Drill – helps develop full-court pressure defense. Players work to pressure the ball and turn it as many times as possible before playing live 1-on-1 at the other end of the floor. The Gauntlet – players learn to fight through a series of screens before having to play live 1-on-1 defense. The Turf Wars Drill – motivates players by rewarding them on the offensive end for their defensive effort. Philosophical Building Blocks Wade’s philosophy and team culture is built upon the idea of toughness. Players must buy in to the program philosophy and Wade discusses how he goes about getting players to commit. He will share a number of statistics that he emphasizes and how he demands effort on those numbers in practice. You will also see four different techniques designed to improve your offensive rebounding. Like defense, getting rebounds is about being aggressive and attacking an opponent. These are the types of things that Coach Wade emphasizes in his program. They are exactly the kinds of things you can emphasize in your program in an effort to become successful.
