Rick Majerus: Off Season Drills and Ideas
College basketball Hall of Fame inductee Rick Majerus shares his insights about various facets of the game in this video. Majerus won over 500 games in his career and finished with the fourth-best winning percentage (.741) among Division I coaches. His teams made 12 NCAA tournament appearances, including Utah’s trip to the national championship game in 1998.
In this video, Coach Majerus offers up some of his best drills to help players become better scorers and better defenders. For Majerus, it’s not really about the drill itself but how coaches teach within the drill. This is why Majerus was one of the all-time great coaches.
Defense - Off Season Drills
Coach Majerus likes to emphasize a demanding style of defense in the summer that forces players to refine their techniques while at the same time develop a tough mindset. The idea is to force defensive play that is more challenging than players will see during the regular season.
Majerus teaches players to play aggressive denial defense, contest shots without fouling, on-ball pressure, and how to maintain an impeccable stance and court vision. He also teaches a variety of defensive techniques – denying flashes from the help side, closing out on the ball, and fronting post players – in a number of drills.
Skill Development - Off Season Drills
Coach Majerus demonstrates five drills that can be used to improve skills like ball handling and scoring ability. The 12 Shots Drill was used regularly by Reggie Miller, one of the best shooters to play the game. The drill teaches players how to get open and challenges them to work on their shot preparation.
The Hesitation Layup Drill helps players develop a change of speed when handling the ball. Coach Majerus discusses how to improve the back dribble in an effort to create separation, avoid traps, and find better passing angles.
Finally, Majerus shows you two drills to develop the finishing ability of your post players. For each drill, Coach Majerus offers the teaching points you need to develop successful players. Success will not come during the season unless players put in the work in the offseason. Let one of the all-time greats help you maximize the development of your players. Competitive Basketball Drills with Game-Like Situations
Coach Odom likes to build his practices around game-like situations. In this segment, he demonstrates a variety of exercises that are done daily to help players learn to defend and score. In 1-on-1 Closeouts and 1-on-1 Rebounding, players must pursue the ball to get a quick outlet and get up the floor looking for a quick 3-point shot or a layup.
V-Cut passing is a drill designed to help players communicate as they pass the ball up the floor as quickly as possible simulating the fast break. Players learn to catch the ball with two hands and drive to the basket.
Skill Development
Coach Odom helps build his players’ ability to score with a series of breakdown drills for guards and posts. Motion Action is a half-court offense drill that teaches players to read a defense, attack it, and score. This is one of several motion action and finishing drills that Odom uses for both guards and posts. Post players work on cutting to the basket, especially in transition and all players learn the half-court rules and actions of Odom’s offense.
Half-Court Offense
Practices normally finish with 5-on-5 action. Here, Coach Odom’s players work on the motion actions and post finishes that they learned in the drills in a 5-on-5 setting. Heat Transition is a drill to help players attack and take advantage of a transition situation. The use of quick outlet passes and catching the ball with two hands are fundamental principles that players carry over into games.
Coach Odom’s 112-minute video illustrates why his UMBC teams have achieved success. UMBC teams are known for their ability to compete on any given night against any given team in the country. Mark Few
(Rental)-Running Your Offense Through The Post
$18.99
Basketball Post Plays : Running Your Offense Through the Post
One of the most overlooked parts of today’s game of basketball is basketball post plays. Some say it’s a lost art, but Gonzaga head coach Mark Few has used a strategy that uses big men in transition and has been very successful. In fact, Few has led Gonzaga to 20 straight NCAA tournament appearances, nine Sweet Sixteen appearances, three Elite Eights, and one trip to the national championship.
In this video, Few details how he uses post players in his offense, which is typically one of the most efficient in the country on an annual basis. Few talks about a philosophy of offense built around strong post play, how to get the ball to the post in transition, and spacing the floor to create room for post players.
Secondary Break
Coach Few breaks down the progression of strategies he uses to get the ball inside in the secondary break. Few puts emphasis on getting the ball to the post for layups in transition. If that doesn’t happen, Few shows you how the point guard can read the post defender to make an easy scoring play. Also detailed is playing with two post players in a high-low formation. You will also see how Gonzaga flows right into their offense if the post is unable to get the ball.
Spacing the Floor
Gonzaga has had some of the more dominant post players in the nation and, as a result, faces a lot of opponents that try to double the post or help in the paint. Few stresses the spacing of perimeter players. Spacing makes helping and doubling the post much more difficult. You will see three strategies for spreading out shooters and preoccupying defenders.
Basketball Post Plays
Coach Few demonstrates seven set plays for getting the ball inside to your post player. Few runs one play early in games to determine how opponents are defending the post. You will see how one set overloads the defense and forces it to either give up a dunk or an open 3-point shot. Two pick and roll plays open up the post and keep defenses guessing. Throughout his discussion of these plays, Few adds counters and wrinkles you can use against defenses.
Coach Few’s strategies for post play can be a great addition to your option this season and in future seasons as well. Rent this basketball post plays DVD today.

Bruce Weber: Rebounding Drills & Last-Second Plays
Rebounding is crucial to winning basketball games. On the offensive end, rebounds give teams more opportunities to score. On the defensive end, good rebounding teams limit the number of opponent’s possessions. Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber shares with you nine practice drills that have helped his players become strong rebounders. Weber has enjoyed plenty of success winning a pair of Big 12 titles (2013, 2019) and taking his 2005 Illinois team to the national final. In addition to rebounding drills, Weber also introduces drills that improve passing, spacing, and end-of-game situations.
Warm Up Drills
Two drills are demonstrated as part of Weber’s warm up. The Step Off Passing drills teaches players how to get open for a pass, pivot through pressure, and make good passes to teammates. The Rope Action drills helps players understand how to maximize space and play off of dribble penetration.
Rebounding
Coach Weber demonstrates nine rebounding drills that range from 1-on-1 to full 5-on-5. These drills include:
1-on-1 Pad Rebounding: players learn to defeat a block out and grab an offensive rebound
3-on-3 Rotate: players are challenged to find a new player to block out
Scramble Rebound: players attempt to secure a rebound when outnumbered
Rush Rebound: non-stop, full-court drill that will test a team’s toughness
Weber also talks about how to block out opponents in free throw situations preventing them from stealing easy second chance points.
Last-Second Situations
The real secret to winning close games is practicing end-of-game situations. Teams that practice under pressure perform better when it comes to games. Weber explains two drills he uses to simulate pressure.
Perfect Finish: puts players in late-game situations where failure to execute results in a loss
30-Second Drill: challenges the defense to stop the opponent for an entire possession
Coach Weber includes five set inbound plays complete with options and counters. These are plays that can be used when your team needs a quick basket. Weber also discusses how he keeps score in his drills which creates competition.

With so much emphasis on scoring and on-ball defense, rebounding drills often gets overlooked as a skill that can directly contribute to success. Rebounding has helped Jones earn two Ivy League Coach of the Year awards and four league championships in his 20 years at the school. You will also see eight must-have inbounds plays, including one you can use with just one second remaining on the clock.
Offensive Rebounding Technique
Coach Jones presents four individual rebounding drills to improve the skill of offensive rebounding. Players are taught three techniques:
Spin move: a basic maneuver to get away and get the basketball
Swim move: used when a player blocking out is stepping toward the offensive rebounder
Walk underneath move: used by post players who are blocked out by a player facing the basket
Jones also covers the “tap-out” which is used when an offensive rebounder cannot control the ball with two hands. Players are taught to simply tap the ball back out to a teammate who can secure the rebound.
Team Rebounding Drills
Coach Jones shows you seven team rebounding drills designed to help your players become elite level rebounders. The “three in a row” concept is shares to make rebounding competitive and help players stay focused on rebounding. Other drills and concepts include:
A unique take on Tom Izzo’s War Rebounding Drill with a slight change to include offensive and defensive transition
How to teach rebounding in transition to limit an opponent’s offensive rebounding capabilities
How to get your team to communicate and rebound while also working on closing out to a shooter
Out of Bounds Plays
Coach Jones demonstrates a series of baseline inbounds plays from a 1-4 set. You will see a play you can run against zone defenses that works from two different alignments. Also included are two corner inbound plays and a sideline inbound play that can be used in an end-of-game situation.
When facing zone defenses on a baseline inbound situation, Coach Jones shows you a play that can be run from a box or line formation and has four options. The package of out-of-bounds plays is completed with one from Jones and the second from Mike Jarvis.

(Rental)-Scoring Against Man To Man & Zone Defenses

Scoring Against Man to Man and Zone Defenses
The first coach in college basketball history to take five different teams to the NCAA tournament, Lon Kruger has been a success everywhere he has coached. Currently at the University of Oklahoma, Kruger shares with you his ideas about offensive basketball in this video. Using a variety of 3-on-0, 5-on-0, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 drills; Kruger teaches fundamentals such as spacing, screening, passing, and much more in this video. Scoring against man to man & zone defenses will be much easier by using Lon Kruger's methods.
3-on-0 and 5-on-0 Drills
Coach Kruger begins his teaching using 3-on-0 drills. Here, he emphasizes passing with the outside hand, v-cuts, and balancing the floor with the dribble. The drills are done at game speed to help players understand how to execute in a half-court offense.
The drills progress to a 5-on-0 transition drill where Coach Kruger again teaches spacing and the different options available in the fast break. Players learn how to run the floor properly getting into the right positions in the half court. Coach Kruger also talks about how to adapt his system to different skill sets and he takes you through some of the different options he has used over the years.
Breakdown of the Ball Screen
Because of its importance, Coach Kruger thoroughly reviews the ball screen. He puts emphasis on the timing, screening angles, and the execution of the pop or the roll by the post player setting the screen. For guards, Coach Kruger stresses the importance of proper screening angles and understanding the strengths of your players. For those who are better drivers, the screens are set inside the 3-point line. For shooters, screens are set outside the 3-point arc.
For posts setting ball screens, Coach Kruger likes to utilize the strength of the individual player again. Shooters have the freedom to step out and hit the 3-pointer. Better inside players are taught to roll to the basket and look for the ball.
Offense Against Zone Defenses
Coach Kruger also shows you how to break the 2-3 zone using a 1-3-1 look. He reviews dribble penetration of the gaps, misdirection, and ball fakes and demonstrates each on the court. Coach Kruger discusses the angled ball screen, which helps to distort the 2-3 zone by moving defenders out of position. Kruger also shares ideas on attacking a variety of other zone defenses, including the 1-3-1 half-court trap.
Coach Kruger has demonstrated over time that his offenses can attack both man-to-man and zone defenses. This video is an in-depth look at how one of college basketball’s all-time greats does exactly that. Rent this scoring against man to man defense video today.

Darrel "Mouse Davis
Former Portland State University Offensive coordinator
Portland State was the leader in passing offense for back-to-back seasons, with an average of 360.9 yards per contest in 2007 and 372.2 yards (2008).
This DVD is nearly 50 years worth of experience using the Run-and-Shoot technique from Mouse Davis, the legendary "Father" Run-and-Shoot. Coach Davis recommends all coaches include the "260" screen pass in their offense. The ability to sell the idea that the ball keys are on this screen is a sign of a decisive quarterback. Davis illustrates the screen play against zone and man defenses to emphasize the versatility of this play. The defensive look will maximize the screen's value. To make this a more dangerous weapon, Davis adds the screen pass for the X or Z to the package. Offensive line splits are also covered, which allow the defense to open up the run game when they least expect it. Davis explains the trap play, which is another component of the screen scheme. This option is part of the Run Shoot offensive arsenal. This package includes screen play against the man, blitz and zone. This scheme's versatility can be used to add more touchdowns to any offense. You can take a leaf from Mouse Davis's long and successful career and get to the end zone consistently.

Learn from Dan Morrison
Your team can reach new heights!
To be the best, learn from the best.
Dan Morrison
SMU Assistant Head Coach;
Former University of Hawaii Quarterback Coach
Morrison was a key player in the development of NCAA all-time pass leader Timmy Chang (now NCAA all time touchdown pass leader) and Colt Brennan (now NCAA all-time quarterback). Morrison was able to produce All-Conference players in five of his nine seasons. The Warrior offense was ranked among the top five in passing every year during Morrison's nine-year tenure as Hawaii's QB Coach.
This DVD will cover the powerful Shotgun Offense starting at the quarterback -- the most important component of the Run-and-Shoot offense. Coach Morrison is the mentor to Timmy Chang, the NCAA's all-time passing leader. He has been lauded throughout the Western Athletic Conference for being one of the most respected quarterback coaches in collegiate football. Morrison starts by illustrating two pass routes, the "Go Route" or the "Choice Route." This presentation focuses on the two most important parts of this offense, the quarterback drop and hip turn. This DVD also includes live footage from the field for drills and practice. This segment covers footwork, posture, and body position. The drill at 20 yards develops footwork and keeps feet active. Proper and accurate passing skills can be developed by throwing from the knees. The Knee drill is vital for quarterbacks. It strengthens the arm and stomach muscles. Morrison believes accuracy is the most important skill, followed by strength, footwork, and quarterback ball handling. Morrison uses game footage to illustrate the points and routes that have helped the Warriors achieve one of the most successful passing programs in America.
