The guards will be working on the ball handling fundamentals and dribbling around cones simulating screens, feeding various cuts and also getting their own shots off the dribble. On the other hand, the post will have a different job to do as well. The posts will be working on denying post flashes and post entry passes. Bob Hurley's All Time Favorite Basketball Practice Drills by Bob Hurley Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Bob Hurley (Rental)-Bob Hurley's All Time Favorite Basketball Practice Drills $18.99
Bob Hurley Drills My All Time Favorite Practice Drills Over a 45-year career as the mentor of one of the top high school basketball programs in the nation, Bob Hurley has run just about every drill in existence. In this video, Coach Hurley shares with you his all-time favorite drills. In addition, he also talks about how he likes to organize practices. A member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Hurley opens his presentation sharing some advice on coaching. Coaches should never be finished learning and should work to improve their craft. Hurley talks about practice planning, drill work, and more. Pre-Practice and Warm-Up Drills Coach Hurley’s favorite warm-up drills worked on the three foundational skills of basketball: dribbling, passing, and shooting. He shows you the Fire Passing Drill which forces players to concentrate and communicate. The Michigan State series gets players moving and finishing around the basket. Drills like Up Two, Back Two, and the Chill Drill teach players how to attack a trap and also work on change of direction moves. All of Hurley’s warm-up drills challenge players both mentally and physically. Rebounding and Closeout Drills You can’t play offense if you can’t rebound! Coach Hurley trains players to be instinctive around the basket. The Oregon Rebounding Drills helps create toughness and forces players to compete for rebounds. One of the more challenging fundamentals of defense is the closeout. Coach Hurley shares a number of drills that help to teach the technique as well as incorporate things like ball screen defense in the 4-Line Passing Drill. The 3-on-3 and 4-on-3 Closeout Drills work on defensive efficiency especially in disadvantage situations. Conversion Drill One of the reasons why Coach Hurley’s St. Anthony’s HS teams were so hard to score against in transition was the 5-on-5 Conversion Drill. Your team will learn how to communicate and stop the ball in transition. Shooting Drills & Half-Court 3-on-3 To learn how to play off of each other, Hurley uses the 3-on-3 Half-Court Drill. Players incorporate all they have learned in half-court offense and defense. Coach Hurley then shifts to shooting drills. He shares some of his favorites including those that work on shooting off the catch and shooting off the dribble. One particularly favorite drill is 30 Plus a Half. It’s a great shooting drill to close a practice. Players love it and it works on improving all aspects of shooting. There are only three high school coaches in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Hurley is one. His “old school” values still hold true in the modern game and you get to learn from one of the true masters in this video.
Bob Hurley's Drills for Defensive Mastery by Bob Hurley Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Bob Hurley (Rental)-Bob Hurley's Drills for Defensive Mastery $18.99
Bob Hurley’s Drills for Defensive Mastery For 45 years, Bob Hurley Sr. was the head basketball coach at St. Anthony’s High School in New Jersey where he captured 28 state championships, won four national championships, and produced hundreds of quality players that went on to play at the college level. Hurley is well known throughout the coaching ranks as one of the most knowledgeable in the business. In this video, you will be presented with a plethora of knowledge from one of the best coaches in the world. Philosophy For Hurley, all players must follow a pattern of daily habits that help mold not only successful players, but successful people. Hurley has taught and modeled these habits throughout his four decades-plus as a coach and his teams have been remarkably consistent as a result. In addition, Hurley sets the expectation that practice will always be harder than games. Hurley establishes this at the beginning of every season and it helps players strive to work on their weaknesses to improve the team. Drills Each year begins with Hurley teaching the basics of defense. It all starts with the stance and progresses to footwork. Hurley emphasizes desire and hustling after loose balls. It is these types of things that have helped him establish himself as one of the great coaches at the high school level. In addition to defense, players must master the basics of rebounding, which include proper positioning and attacking the glass on either end of the floor. Here, Coach Hurley introduces a series of drills designed to make players better rebounders. Superman Series: Hurley demonstrates five different drills that can be used to develop an absolute stud rebounder, no matter if the player is a post or a guard. Each drill focuses on the fundamentals of rebounding including using two hands, being strong with the ball, and even using a shot fake after an offensive rebound. 6-Man Closeout: Defenses today must be able to contest shots from the perimeter and be prepared for the drive when a post player sprints out to set a ball screen. This drill helps teach ball screen defense under game-like conditions. At the conclusion of the video, Hurley shares his thoughts on offensive celebrations. He teaches his players to eliminate them because once a basket is scored another offense is ready to push the ball up the floor in an effort to score. Hurley’s defenses are so good because after a made basket they sprint back on defense to prepare for the next possession. Whether you are a rookie coach or a veteran of many years, Coach Hurley has some wisdom for you in this 61-minute video. With a list of honors a mile long, Coach Hurley knows a thing or two about successful defense and he shares it with you in this video.

Players run in transition and read the defense looking to attack the rim, kick the ball to the wing, or hit a pull up jumper. It’s a great drill that incorporates a number of offensive individual skills. Passing, Pivoting, and Cutting Basketball Drills It is the attention to detail that separates the best players and coaches from the rest. Practice Organization Learning and growth happens in practice. A well-organized practice is essential for coaches. Coach Hurley describes how his team overcame many obstacles on the path to becoming a champion program. He gives examples of practices he's used throughout his career. Hurley starts with drills that move his players around the floor, such a 5-Man weave. He emphasizes the importance of using fundamentals to develop skill. After players have become comfortable, Hurley moves on to defense and defensive technique, with a special emphasis on transition. He loves 5 on 3 + 2. This drill allows athletes to practice getting back and creating a triangle defensively to stop easy baskets around he rim. Coaching players allows Coach Hurley to show them individual skills and moves in a breakout session that includes guards and posts. Hurley spends the rest of his practices in Shell Defense and scrimmaging scenarios, which allow players learn while they play. Shooting, Rebounding Players are becoming more offensively skilled, so focusing on shot fakes and passing will make the difference between an average offensive player and a top-level scorer. To help athletes become strong passers, Coach Hurley teaches them pivoting and passing angles. Learn how to use pass fakes to get around various off-ball screens. Hurley's 3v3 team works on Hurley's athletes cutting, screening, getting open to their shot, and moving at game speed. Hurley's 3v3 format allows him to maximize court space so that there aren't many players waiting for shots to be taken. Coach Hurley says that rebounding is about technique and effort. He loves to have players bounce the ball off the backboard, then move to the opposite side of the court to rebound it. This is a great way to teach a reverse layup off of a rebound. Transition Defense Next, Hurley will outline his concepts for transition defense. Guards who are protecting the ball cannot be beaten off the first dribble, and they can't beat the sideline. The coach diagrams the Double Fist and Fist looks. He learned this from Dean Smith. Fist is a game where players try to fake and stunt the trap. This ensures that the offense does not have an advantage over the defense. Double Fist allows players to run and trap while not being observed by the ball handler. Coach Hurley also describes a drill that he uses on the half court to train his players to find a guard for when the trap is beat. Half Court Defense Over many years of coaching, Coach Hurley has developed defensive principles that can be used in a variety of game-like situations. These drills include exchanging positions in a 2v2 environment and then moving to the baseline. Hurley's One More drill has four players working together to move the ball around the perimeter. Then, Hurley will go in for a long closeout and play 2v2. This format is 2v2, 3v3, 4v4. This three-plus hour compilation of coaching knowledge outlines the key elements to running a successful basketball program year in and year out. This video is packed with so much information that you'll be sure to watch it again and learn something new each time.
