Archie Miller: Transition Offense Basketball Drills
Develop a system of attacking opponents on every possession with help from Indiana University head coach Archie Miller. The former head coach at Dayton who took the Flyers to an Elite Eight, Miller is known for getting his teams to play an up-tempo style of basketball that puts pressure on opponents.
In this video, you will see two different transition offenses that can be used after made shots or misses. Miller gives you some quick hitters that will work well in any offense. There is an effective system for breaking presses as well as drills for creating an up-tempo style of play. There is even a question and answer segment where Miller gets more specific with some of his offensive strategies.
Carolina Transition Offense Basketball Drills – Makes
When an opponent scores, Coach Miller’s team goes right into its Carolina transition. The transition offense works to create scoring opportunities for each position on the floor and then flow directly into the motion offense. Miller uses the 5-on-0 Run Through Drill where players learn to feed the ball into the post on rim runs or advance the ball with passes “up the street” or “across the street.”
Phoenix Transition Offense Basketball Drills – Misses
On missed shots, Coach Miller’s team pushes the ball up the floor using the Phoenix transition offense. Immediately off of a rebound, the Phoenix fast break starts. It is a flexible system that can take on a variety of configurations and fits well with any combination of personnel on the floor. Coach Miller shows you the Phoenix Build Up Drill to teach you how easily it is to use motion-like principles to get into a number of drag ball screen situations.
Transition Triggers
The transition offense is not complete without a way to attack the press. Here, Coach Miller demonstrates three triggers that a point guard initiates: the flip, spin, and through. You also see how the Carolina transition offense can be modified to break the press. Miller explains player spacing and rotations as part of an effective press break.
Transition Drills
Coach Miller shares four practice drills that help you install the transition offense and help your players understand the nuances of each.
Read and React Drill: forces players to think on the fly and run a set play using the Carolina break
Phoenix/Carolina Combination: develops both fast break styles in the same full court trip with a 5-on-0 run through
Circle Transition: 5-on-5 scrimmage drill with emphasis on competition
Free Throw Transition: another 5-on-5 scrimmage drill off a free throw
Q & A

Archie Miller: Off-Season Skill Development
Indiana University head coach Archie Miller guides you through an in-depth workout designed to build skills as well as condition your athletes. Miller formerly the head coach at the University of Dayton where his Flyers won back-to-back Atlantic-10 titles in 2016-17 and advanced the Elite Eight in 2014.
Miller details the strategies and drills he used at Dayton and currently at Indiana to develop players. You will see on-court demonstrations with Miller’s coaching staff. They will take you through a number of drills that you can implement into your off-season program right away. Coach Miller also goes through his offseason plan and how to make sure players are pushed to do their best.
Coach Miller teaches the warmup, ball handling, and shooting drills and also a set of competitive drills that simulate game situations. Miller wants all of his drills – no matter what they are – to be done at game speed. All players learn the following moves from any position on the floor:
Power layup
Reverse hook
Pull up jumper
Step through
Reach out layup
Perimeter-to-post
Coach Miller goes unconventional with his shooting series. It’s not the typical spot shooting drill. Instead, a clock is used to push players to go at game speed. The end result is a tough, challenging shooting workout. Drills include the following:
Spot Shooting Series – 1-Step & 2-Step
Spot Shooting Series on the Move
3 Men, 2 Balls Drill (shoot 2s, 3s, pullup jumpers, half-court speed pullup jumpers, and line shooting)
The other thing Coach Miller does is chart players’ progress to help them build confidence and hold them accountable. Players will want to improve as they see their numbers after every workout. They will continue to buy into the program as they see their progress.
Coach Miller’s offseason development program is challenging and helps build the skills your players need to be successful.
