Disruptive Full Court Pressure Defensive System Loyola-Marymount assistant and former Metro State head coach Derrick Clark shows you how his teams use full-court defensive pressure to control a game’s tempo, force turnovers, and create absolute chaos for opponents. While head coach at NCAA Division II Metro State, Clark led his teams to consecutive conference championships, conference tournament championships, 30-plus-win seasons, and Final Four appearances. His 2013 team was the NCAA Division II runner-up. Full Court Pressure Defense Philosophy Coach Clark begins with a description of his defensive philosophy. That includes controlling tempo, taking opponents out of their comfort zone, and forcing turnovers. Clark’s defensive pressure package includes a variety of man-to-man and zone defenses. He discusses positioning and strategy which includes taking away a primary ball handler, clock/tempo management, and clamping on makes and misses. Man-to-Man Full-Court Press The 55 Press, or the man press, is where Coach Clark’s pressing philosophy starts. You will see how Clark adjusts his team’s alignment against “Stack” and “4-Across” press breaks. In a 5-on-5 setting, Coach Clark demonstrates both trapping and the run-and-jump options as well as how to take away a team’s primary ball handler. Coach Clark emphasizes what he feels is the most important component of the full-court pressure defense – the help and recover. You will see a full breakdown of defensive recovery and a breakaway drill that focuses on the skill. The drill helps teams create turnovers even when they are in a disadvantaged state. 2-2-1 Zone Press Coach Clark reveals two versions of his 2-2-1 zone press. Blue is the passing version which forces opponents to use up time on the clock while breaking it. Red is the aggressive version and looks to create ball pressure and successful traps to create turnovers. He also discusses “clamping the ball” off a missed shot and shows you how to trap a defensive rebound in an effort to slow down an opponent’s fast break. Coach Clark’s defense is sure to get opponents out of their normal attack. Apply pressure that can adjust to any press offense and be disruptive all over the court!
