Tim Miles: Developing a Winning Culture with Competitive Practice Drills
Former Nebraska head coach Tim Miles takes you through a presentation of the drills he used to change the way his teams played. Throughout his coaching career, Coach Miles was tasked with taking over a below-average program and turning it into a winner. He did so successfully and at Nebraska won the Big Ten’s Coach of the Year award in 2014 when he led the Cornhuskers to the NCAA tournament.
Culture Change
Coach Miles starts his presentation with a discussion of how he was able to change the culture of his programs. He identifies key questions you should be asking yourself as you analyze your program. That is one of the keys to beginning the process of change. Miles also points out that, as a head coach, you must know and win your locker room.
Practice Drills
The bulk of Miles’ presentation is centered on nine practice drills and the different ways you can limit the drills to teach your players basketball skills. Each drill will challenge players and make them think about offensive/defensive actions. The drills also serve to condition your athletes and make them aware of their habits. The drills include:
- 2-on-2 Drills: these teach players to make smart and effective decisions in transition, reading screens, and how to stay out of foul trouble
- 3-on-3 Drills: players learn creative ways to feed the post and rebound the basketball
- 4-on-4 Drills: these are full-court drills that teach players how to move without the ball and maximize the dribble against pressure defense
GATA Program
The final segment of the presentation is Miles’ GATA program. Coach Miles wants to push his players harder than they ever have or harder than they are used to. Practice pace and patterns might be one of the reasons why teams lose. Teams that have a long warmup then get intense and float through the end of practice may do the same in games and not finish well. Miles GATA program addresses that to ensure teams play hard the entire game.
This is a great practice drill video for any coach at any level looking to add new and innovative toughness drills that will push players to the next level.
