Lew Johnston
former Western Branch HS (VA) Head Coach,
5x District Champions
4x Time District "Coach Of The Year"
Spread offense, once "new", has become a standard for all levels of football. Coach Johnston is an expert in the Spread Shot-Wing and shares his views on how to defend it. From a defensive perspective, there are two basic concepts that must be understood: what the offensive numbers advantage is and who has duel responsibilities. The opposing coach will draw an imaginary line across the field from the center of the field, and then attack the side with the fewest number of defenders. This is called number advantage. Johnston illustrates his points using game footage. Johnston uses the whiteboard to show how an opponent will decide which defender is responsible for duel responsibility. Spread coaches who want to run won't move from their base run attack. Johnston outlines the keys to stopping Spread coaches from using the FB trap, sweep and HB Power. The depth of your corners as well as the lateral position and safety of your free safety will be key factors in defending the pass. Johnston outlines his five core principles for defending the Spread Shot Wing.

Tom Izzo Defense & Rebounding Drills
Michigan State under head coach Tom Izzo has been one of the premier basketball programs in the nation for the past decade-plus. Izzo’s teams have won 11 combined Big Ten regular season and tournament championships and have made seven Final Four appearances. Izzo’s Spartans are known for their physical, intense style of play that includes aggressive man-to-man defense and an emphasis on rebounding. In this video, Coach Izzo shares his “Defense Wins Championships” approach to the Michigan State program.
You will see whiteboard sessions, a live practice session, and a unique look inside Izzo’s defense through interview segments with the Spartans coach. Coach Izzo also explains his program’s philosophy of team defense including transition defense, his approach to rebounding, and the six-eye approach to defensive positioning in the half court.
Live Practice Session
Watch as Coach Izzo puts his players through 10 practice drills that help build the Spartans man-to-man defense. Each breakdown drill gets players numerous reps and builds the foundational defensive principles needed. The drills include:
Jump to the Ball and Negaunee Drills: Players work on defensive positioning, pressuring the ball, and denying cutters.
Three Man DHO Switching Drill: Teaches two strategies for defending dribble handoffs
Pin Down & Flares Drill: Teaches strategies for defending common off-ball screens
Beat and Belt Drill: Challenges players to deny flash cuts to the high post and adjust to stop the back cut
There is also a whiteboard segment where Coach Izzo shows you a couple versions of his Shell Drill. On-court demonstration is added to show each layer of the drill.
Defending Ball Screens
Coach Izzo provides you with a number of options for countering the talents of your opponents. The Ball Screens drill focuses on the two defenders involved in the screen action and helps them refine their technique. The Continuous Ball Screens drill gets the entire team reps working on defending ball screens. Players work on defending shooters off the dribble, drivers, and stretch 4s and 5s.
Rebounding and Transition Defense
Coach Izzo uses the whiteboard and on-court demonstration to show you his two favorite rebounding drills. They are two versions – 2-on-2 and 5-on-5 – of his famous War Drill. The session ends with a 6-on—5 defensive scrimmage.
As you will see throughout the entire video, Coach Izzo works to instill a tough, hard-nosed mentality into all of his players. The concepts and practices presented are proven and can help any program improve its team defense. Rent this rebounding drills DVD today.
Greg Lansing
(Rental)-Defense Drills
$18.99
Open Practice: Defense Drills
Defense is always a hot-button topic among coaches at all levels. In this open practice video, Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing takes you through a full practice full of drills that will make your defense better. Coach Lansing hits on three defensive fundamentals and much more that will help your players become better individual defenders thereby making your team defense stronger.
Shell Drills
Learn how to run the shell drill three different ways to teach concepts such as defending ball screens, doubling the post, and playing defense in transition.
Defend Ball Screens: Coach Lansing shows you how to defend ball screens with his over action. The on-ball defender fights through the screen while the screener defender helps before recovering.
Double the Post: After an entry pass, the post puts the ball on the floor. This is when the double team occurs. When the ball comes out of the post, a scramble situation is taught to close out on the ball.
Full Court Shell: This is a three possession drill with full-court man defense. The defense must communicate in order to get matched up and into proper help position.
Closeout Drills
Coach Lansing shares four drills that teach a different form of closeout depending upon the situation. All players must be able to closeout to take away an opponent’s shot. The drills include the Diagonal Closeout which teaches technique in closing out to gaps in the defense and on a skip pass. The Three Line Closeout is a drill with constant motion and serves as a good warmup to begin a defensive session.
Toughness Drills to Teach Blockouts
A culture of toughness is built through two drills that teach blockouts and the value of outworking your opponent. Morningside is a 2-on-2 drill that works on blocking out and finishing through contact. 5-on-5 Blockout is a structured drill that allows coaches to choose an exact spot for a blockout to occur.
Transition Drills
Coach Lansing takes his team through full-court drills to train defensive transition and recovery. You will see how the drill flows into a few back-and-forth possessions before it is stopped and Lansing corrects his athletes and offers a few adjustments. The 11-Man Drill and Full-Court Shell are used to improve transition defense.
This video offers the basic fundamentals of defense and a number of drills that can develop both individual and team defense. Take your defense and rebounding to the next level with Coach Lansing’s high-intensity and highly informative open practice video.

Steve Prohm
(Rental)-Defensive Basics Drills To Build Your Man To Man Defense
$18.99
Basic Defense Drills for Basketball
The Iowa State basketball program has been known for its high-scoring offenses for much of the past decade. Head coach Steve Prohm has worked hard to develop his team’s defensive identity, one that has helped the Cyclones reach the NCAA Tournament three times during Prohm’s tenure.
In this excellent on-court video, Coach Prohm discusses and demonstrates some of the fundamental drills that he uses on a daily basis to build his defense. These are the same drills that helped Prohm take his first Cyclone team in 2015-16 to the Sweet Sixteen. The drills begin with individual technique and eventually build to team concepts.
Closeout and Denial Drills
The first five drills introduced by Coach Prohm all work on executing the closeout. Each drill is different, but the focus is the closeout. These drills include straight and angled closeouts, help defense, conditioning, sprints and slides, and denials. These drills can be incorporated into any system and can be adjusted for your style of play.
After the first five drills, Coach Prohm introduces the 6-Point Defensive drill which covers each element of a successful defensive system. These elements include:
Closeouts
Playing the gap
Denying the post
Playing two passes away
Giving early help
The basic defense drills for basketball then progress to what Prohm calls “energizers” where additional defenders are added. These drills work on important defensive concepts while also getting up and down the floor in 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 action. Coach Prohm spends some time in these drills talking about and demonstrating help defense.
Disadvantages and Transition Drills
In the course of any game, defenses are often forced to defend when at a disadvantage. You need to practice these situations in order to stop them. Coach Prohm shares three drills that teach the defense how to make stops in these situations.
4-on-3 Contest Drill
4-on-3 Disadvantage Drill
5-on-3 Transition Drill
All of these drills can be customized to fit any system. You can also modify them to include actions that you expect from certain opponents. These drills are valuable for any coach looking to build a defense capable of winning a championship. Rent this basic defense drills for basketball today.
Tim Jankovich

Tim Jankovich: Defensive Concepts vs. Man and Zone Offenses
There is no question that teams that play great defense win championships. Tim Jankovich, head coach at SMU and former Bill Self assistant, shares his defensive philosophy which includes eight components to form a sound system. Jankovich has plenty of experience having posted the most victories by a first-year head coach at Illinois State (25) and then winning American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2017 when he led SMU to the conference regular season and tournament championships.
In this video, Coach Jankovich shares a ton of information you can use to develop an outstanding man-to-man defense. He will discuss 1-on-1 defense, defensive positioning, and how to defend things like off-ball cuts, drives, and screening actions.
Winning in Transition
The team that wins in transition normally wins the battle on the scoreboard. Coach Jankovich shares the mentality your team must take to become a sound transition defense. He discusses why he spends so much time in transition and he breaks down how to speed this conversion up. With offensive pace as high as its ever been, teams that are strong defensively can slow down opponents.
Defensive Foundations
Coach Jankovich begins here by breaking down individual and team on- and off-ball defense. It all starts with the basic footwork and positioning. From there, he gets into closing out speedy and shifty players. Then, Coach Jankovich takes it to the team level by demonstrating his version of the Shell Drill, something that can be done daily.
Defensive Positioning
Jankovich continues building upon his previous concepts and breaks down defending cuts and drives. You will see that he emphasizes a flat triangle, jumping to the ball, and being able to draw the line between you and your man. You will learn cues of basic help positioning, trapping and recovering on baseline drives, defending dribble penetration, and how to help off defenders.
Because screens are a big part of most every offense today, Coach Jankovich spends time teaching coverages for some of the more difficult screening actions like wide pin downs, stagger screens, and the pick and pop action.
If your defense is not where you want it to be or you are taking over a program and starting from scratch, Coach Jankovich demonstrates concepts and drills that serve a purpose in building the foundation of a successful defense at any level.

Individual On-Ball Defense
Coach Bruno demonstrates a number of drills that will improve your overall team defense. There are drills to establish an athletic defensive stance, where all defense begins. You will also see drills that develop explosive slides and train players to stay in front of the ball. Proper stance and technique can help minimize breakdowns that result from players getting beat off the dribble. This is where you will see improvements in your team defense.
Half-Court Defense
Coach Bruno introduces four drills designed to improve your half-court defense. The Close Out and Sprint to Help Line Drill works on close out technique and positioning relative to the ball. The 2-on-2 version of the drill forces players to help with dribble penetration before closing out to recover on the skip pass.
Two drills emphasize denial defense and how your players can take out a defender. The Continuous Denial drill can be run in both 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 situations. Players deny the wing and cut off the baseline while defending the ball. The second drill forces players to fight through multiple screens while trying to deny the basketball.
Transition and Full Court Defense
Transition defense is an important part of any team’s defensive package. Coach Bruno brings you four drills to improve your defensive play in transition. The 5-on-5 Across the Free Throw Line Drill challenges your defense to communicate and scramble in a temporary disadvantage situation.
The Jump and Run Actions series is perfect for breaking down full court defense. Players work in either a 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 situation and apply maximum pressure to the ball. The drill teaches players how to rotate when switches occur.
All of Coach Bruno’s drills can be done without a ball and can help any team at any level to improve its pressure defense and minimize easy baskets. This 74-minute video is full of creative drills that will not only put your team to the defensive test, it will also improve your players’ conditioning. Bob Huggins
(Rental)-Defensive Drills For Creating Turnovers
$19.99
Defensive Drills for Creating Turnovers
Nothing can turn up the heat on an offense like pressure defense. In this drills for creating turnovers video, West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins opens the doors to one of his defensive-focused practices where you will see how he builds both his full- and half-court defenses. Huggins is well known throughout the nation for his pressure defenses that lead to turnovers and easy points. His defenses throughout the years have been a big part of his 765 career wins. Using whiteboard diagrams, lecture, and practice footage; Huggins describes his philosophy of defense and takes you through many of the drills that help develop his style of play.
Defensive Philosophy
Coach Huggins discusses spacing first showing how to cut the court in half, shrink space for offenses, and how doing so enables trapping areas. You will hear Huggins speak of the traits his players must have in order to play good team defense. Coach Huggins prefers an up-the-line/on-the-line style of defense which is known to disrupt an opponent’s attack, take away vision, and now allow direct passing lanes. You will also hear about the Mountaineers’ approach to defending the pick and roll, when to trap, how to defend an inbound pass, scouting, rebounding, and toughness.
Up-the-Line, On-the-Line Drills
For Huggins, help defenders must position themselves between the passer and their man. Huggins teaches this skill through several variations of break down drills that teach proper angles on close outs and 1- or 2-pass positioning.
Using 2-on-2 drills with the help of an unguarded manager, Huggins shows the proper angles defenders must take in order to deny direct line passes. Players in Huggins’ system learn to push the ball to the sideline and off of the 3-point line. They also learn to deal with back-door cuts. Eventually, the break down drills progress to 4-on-4 where players work on proper positioning and help defense. This group of drills culminates with the 4-on-4 +1 drill that puts the defense at a disadvantage forcing players to scramble and communicate.
Position Specific Drills
Huggins breaks down drills for individual positions. Perimeter players work on close outs and applying maximum on-ball pressure. Post players go through five different drills designed to improve their on-ball defense. The 1-on-1 Fast Break Drill challenges post players to protect the rim against an attacker operating off a full speed dribble.
Full Court Pressure
For Coach Huggins, diagramming the press is something that is difficult. He bases his press on taking away what an offense does best and exploiting weaknesses. You will see five drills including the Flick Drill which teaches players how to create fast break opportunities by forcing a turnover with a back tip to a teammate.
Post players work on playing up the line to deny flash cuts by players up the sideline. You will also see back line defenders shifting from denial defense to intercepting passes as help defenders. Posts also work on defending the rim in a 2-on-1 situation trying to force an extra pass. All of the drills in Coach Huggins’ 111-minute video are designed to help you raise the pressure of your defensive system and force more turnovers. Rent this drills for creating turnovers DVD today.
Sharman White
(Rental)-Defensive Game Plan For Practice

Basketball Defensive Drills & Game Plan for Practice
Sharman White won six straight Georgia Class AAAA state championships between 2009 and 2014 and was the 2016 National High School Coaches Association boys’ basketball Coach of the Year. Coach White believes his success is directly related to his team’s defense.
In this on-court basketball defensive drills instructional video, Coach White breaks down his defense beginning with its philosophy. He shares the concepts he teaches every day in practice and shows you the drills he uses to help motivate his players to succeed on the defensive end.
Coach White builds the foundation of the defense with a series of build-up drills that eventually lead to a full 5-on-5 competitive scrimmage. The drills are taught and run early in the season to ensure good habits. They also help players understand the expectations for each individual possession throughout the season.
You will see the Gladiator Drill, which Coach White uses to teach three very important defensive concepts. Taking a charge, cutting off the baseline, and executing the proper closeout are all essentials to quality team defensive play.
Basketball Defensive Drills for the Ball Screen
With today’s offenses so dependent upon the ball screen, Coach White introduces the 2-on-2 Defending the Screen Drill. The idea is to train players to execute the appropriate defense when playing against the ball screen. Having defenders that understand how to defend against ball screens is an absolute must in today’s game.
Since games are won and lost on odd-number matchups, Coach White demonstrates the 5-on-4 drill where players are forced to deal with this advantage/disadvantage for a full 1:30. The drill requires absolute focus and effort, great communication, and adherence to proper techniques to have success.
Coach White explains how these drills help to create a competitive nature in practice every day. He forces his kids to compete by having a winner and a loser in every practice. Doing so has helped White’s players prepare for real games.
This presentation is loaded with defensive drills and concepts to help you develop a defense that can disrupt an opponent’s offensive flow. Coach White also helps in showing you how to organize a competitive practice that gets the most of your time on the court. Rent this basketball defensive drills DVD today.
