Building Your Transition Defense for Basketball with Brett Reed
Training players to be successful in transition defense is easier than you think. Lehigh University head basketball coach Brett Reed has developed a clear and easy system of rules for transition defense covering all the possible disadvantage situations. Coach Reed has led the Mountain Hawks to two NCAA tournament appearances, two Patriot League tournament titles, and one regular season conference championship.
In this video, Coach Reed shares his secrets about how his Lehigh teams have been able to product effective results in defensive transition. Coach Reed breaks down the responsibilities of each player in a number of situations. He begins the presentation with some of his core beliefs on developing a successful basketball program. These are the same beliefs that led Reed and Lehigh to pull one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history. In 2011, Lehigh beat Duke in the first round of the tourney.
Transition Defense On the Court Demonstration
Coach Reed then moves to on-court demonstration where he shows you how each player should respond in an outnumbered situation. You will see how players trailing a 1-on-1 situation should attempt to influence the play. Reed gets into 2-on-1 and 3-on-2 situations and how defenders should force opponents to take outside shots. He believes by doing so his teams win.
Along with each on-court demonstration, Coach Reed offers a drill to build a team skill. The drills and skills learned are designed to protect from the basket out. Each drill in this series is easy to set up, easy to teach, and can be run in a short amount of time. All the drills translate into game situations as well making them extremely relevant.
Coach Reed’s transition defensive system is one that defines a responsibility to each player on the floor. When each player knows his responsibility and executes it, the defense can minimize easy baskets in transition. Teams that limit the number of easy baskets by their opponents have a better chance of winning. Coach Reed’s system is easy to teach and can produce results. Add his 91-minute video to your defensive video collection. Rent this transition defense drills DVD today.

Building Your Half Court Man to Man Defense
It has long been known that defense wins championships at any level of basketball. Iowa City West (IA) HS head coach Steve Bergman has accumulated over 500 career wins and six Iowa Class 4A state championships playing an aggressive man-to-man defense. In this video, Coach Bergman explains the four basic defensive concepts that have contributed to his teams’ defensive success.
In this half court man to man defense video, Coach Bergman uses whiteboard segments and on-court demonstrations to give you an in-depth look at his entire defensive system. You will learn Bergman’s rules for three levels of pressure including how to tailor the defense to best suit your personnel and defend the teams you will face during the season. You also get 13 practice drills that will help you build the foundation for an aggressive man-to-man defense.
Individual Breakdown Drills
Defense begins with stance, footwork, and closeouts and Coach Bergman addresses all three in three different breakdown drills. Each half court man to man defense drill can be adjusted to emphasize the needs of your players based upon their abilities. Coach Bergman stresses hustling back on defense and keeping the ball in front of you. This is how his teams minimize the number of easy baskets by opponents.
Shell Drills
Coach Bergman helps you build team defense concepts through the use of four- and five-man shell drills. He uses a number of variations to help teach concepts such as denying cutters, helping on dribble penetration, and more. The drills include:
Box Drill: works on defending off-ball screens such as pin downs
15-Second Drive Drill: challenges defenders to make the right rotations to stop dribble penetration and recover
Five-Man Shell Drills: incorporates post defense and how the post steps up against dribble penetration
5-on-5 Change Drill: perimeter players learn to “help the helper” in drive situations
Small-Sided Cutthroat Drills
Once the basics of the man-to-man defense have been taught, Coach Bergman turns up the heat with a number of “cutthroat drills” where the defense plays at a disadvantage. These drills include:
8 Passes Drill: defense plays all-out pass denial
4-on-6 Scramble Drill: defenders must rotate correctly to help versus a drive
35-Second Perfection Drill: great drill to demand defenders pay attention to every detail of the defensive system
All the tools to build an outstanding half-court man-to-man defense are here for you from concept to application! Rent this half court man to man defense DVD today.

Building Your Half-Court with Shell Offensive Drills
Mike Procopio, Director of Hoop Consultants and Director of Basketball Operations for ATTACK Athletics in Chicago (IL), has worked with some of the best NBA players of all-time. His client list includes the likes of Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and 75 others. In this video, Coach Procopio shows you how to use shell drills to teach your offense.
Just like using shell drills to teach man-to-man defense, Coach Procopio demonstrates how you can develop your offense using 3-on-0 and 4-on-0 shell offensive drills. The drills you will see throughout the video can be applied directly or you can morph them into your own offensive philosophy and sets.
Scoring Options
In each drill, Coach Procopio teaches the first scoring option then continues building out the offense covering all ensuing scoring options. Players learn to understand your own offensive strategy and build their individual skills.
Pin & Cross Screens
You will see pin down screens where your players learn to immediately read the defense and either score or continue to the next option. Each option is demonstrated including an open jumper, a fade off the screen, backdoor action, and drive and kick.
Along with pin downs, Coach Procopio covers cross screens, UCLA cuts, Horns, wide pin downs, transition quick hitters, Floppy, Zipper, and side pick and rolls. Each is taught using the 3-on-0 and 4-on-0 shell drill.
Transition Offensive Drills
In transition, you’ll see a 2-on-0 player action to show you how players should feed the post, post up, and how to cut once the ball is entered into the post. Coach Procopio outlines three basic principles every post player should know, demonsrates every angle, screen, and cut post players can make when working out of transition.
Coach Procopio also cover the popular pick and roll action widely used in modern basketball. He teaches how to move and interact coming off the screen as well as how guards can set up their man and run them into the screen. In this and every segment, Coach Procopio emphasizes multiple ways to beat the defense. He continually points out footwork, hard cuts, movement off the pass, coming off screens, reading the defense, and more. Using Coach Procopio’s drills, your teams will gain a greater understanding of your offense and be able to score on any opponent. Rent this offensive drills DVD today.

Bob McKillop
(Rental)-Building Your Offense With A Purpose
$15.99
Bob McKillop took over as the head coach at Davidson in 1989. He’s been there ever since and has enjoyed an amazing career. He’s won numerous conference regular season and tournament titles as well as multiple Coach of the Year awards. His 2008 team advanced all the way to the Elite Eight. McKillop has done it all with a very simple philosophy. The details are the foundation of success.
In this presentation, McKillop shares his seven keys to successful basketball. These are:
Seeing
Talking
Having an act
Be down and balanced
Do the little things
Flesh-to-flesh contact
Finish everything
You will also learn the four objectives McKillop uses on a daily basis to teach the game of basketball. They are simple.
Let’s get better
Have fun
Play to win
Make every play count
These daily objectives are controlled by the coach and, if done right, will improve the learning environment of any basketball practice.
Coach McKillop’s philosophy on offense is to use a full-court attacking offense that is extremely aggressive. The offense attacks with discipline taking high percentage shots in transition. The offensive system relies on five basic rules which are given below.
Catch and See: Athletes quickly find their teammates, who is guarding them, and where the opponent is guarding. This helps slow the game down for athletes.
Dribble with a Purpose: Attack somebody or help somebody.
Offense is a Fight for Space: Run through your cut or pivot to create space.
Finish Your Cut: Find a spot on the floor and get there after the cut to create space.
Help Somebody: Learn to sacrifice. Set a screen, run hard up the floor, make an extra pass.
Coach McKillop puts these daily objectives and rules to work in some of his team drills. You will see a 2-Man Stretch Drill, Read the Coach, 3-on-3 with a Coach, and the Triangle Shell Drill.
McKillop’s entire career has been based on these simple objective and rules. Strive to be better this season by taking something from Coach McKillop, the 2008 NABC Coach of the Year.
Doug Bruno

Doug Bruno: Building Your Offensive Philosophy Through Individual Skill Development
Building a successful basketball program requires the ability to develop players. Developing players demands that how coaches teach be just as important as what they teach. DePaul women’s basketball coach Doug Bruno, Conference USA’s Coach of the Decade, shares with you the foundation around which you can build a winning coaching philosophy in this video.
Coach Bruno, who has over 650 career wins and 16 straight trips to the NCAA tournament (2003-18), is highly regarded for his ability to teach and develop players. Year-in and year-out, Bruno’s teams are among the highest-rated in the country. Get an inside look at his methods in this video.
Building a Complete Basketball Player
Coach Bruno takes some time to explain how you can develop players through daily skill development. That development is not just physical; it is also emotional and mental. Coach Bruno believes a dynamic and complete basketball player must have the following ingredients:
A love of competition
Ball handling skills when under pressure
Attention to footwork
Well-versed in all aspects of offense including moving with or without the ball, on the bounce, in triple threat, and in the post
Great eyes and vision
The ability to listen and be coachable to develop basketball IQ
Teaching Method
Players are only as good as what their coaches have taught them. It is important that coaches become great teachers of the game and give players a chance to flourish. Players must understand what is being asked of them every day in practice. Coach Bruno explains how starting slow and building through demonstration, imitation, and repetition can create the perfect learning environment for players to develop their optimal skills.
Offense and Drills
Coach Bruno shares with you some of his favorite drills including one that starts in a triple threat situation. He teaches players to use a shot fake and attack an open gap. He then builds on that adding crossover footwork and executing a change of direction.
Coach Bruno also emphasizes play without the ball. He demonstrates how to get open using a V-cut or a backdoor cut for an easy layup. These individual drills build the foundation that becomes the 1-4 offensive system with scoring options off of a hand off, fake hand off, square up and attack and split-slip option.
Developing players early in the season will help them be ready for the end-of-season stretch run. Coach Bruno has had much success in individual development as evidenced by his 16 straight trips to the NCAA tournament. His offensive philosophy is something that coaches at any level will appreciate and find applicable to use with their programs.
Tad Boyle
(Rental)-Building Your Transition Offense
$17.99
Tad Boyle: Building Your Transition Offense and Team Culture
This two-part video presentation from Colorado men’s head basketball coach Tad Boyle offers great insight into both an up-tempo offense as well as what it takes to build a successful basketball culture. Boyle has turned Colorado into a Pac-12 winner by emphasizing both values and the transition offense. Boyle is the first coach in Colorado history to lead the Buffaloes to four straight 20-plus win seasons. By the end of Coach Boyle’s presentation, you will have the tools necessary to build a winning culture and develop a transition offense that scores points and wears down opponents.
Transition Drills
The up-tempo offense has helped Boyle transform the Colorado program and it can help you do the same. For Boyle, running the fast break also takes advantage of the high altitude at which Colorado plays. All of Coach Boyle’s drills are designed to make players run the floor and make decisions on the go. The offense rewards ball movement over dribbling through a defense.
You will witness a number of drills including a Continuous Fast Break Drill that works on a variety of situations including 2-on-1, 3-on-2, 4-on-3, 5-on-4, and 5-on-5. Boyle teaches the Spread Offense and illustrates where players are to be on the floor in these different situations. He also goes into detail about good shots and bad shots in the transition offense.
Transition Games
Coach Boyle uses three different ‘games’ in practice to reinforce playing fast and taking good shots. These games place emphasis on always taking a layup in transition and how to reverse the ball in a half-court offense in less than 10 seconds.
The 12-Second Game: forces players to get the ball up the floor quickly and shoot layup or get the ball inside to a post player.
The 10-Second Game: similar to the 12-Second drill and teaches players the importance of ball movement.
Nugget Drill: taken from former NBA coach George Karl, this teaches players to shoot either an open 3-pointer or a layup in transition.
Building Culture
The foundation of what Boyle built at Colorado comes from creating and developing a set of core values. Each successful program must define its culture both on and off the court. You will learn how Boyle built his program around the ideas of trust, character, and work ethic. He gets his players to buy in and always refers to these core values at the end of every practice.
In the end, Boyle teaches his players not only how to achieve success on the basketball court, but also in life. This 67-minute video is the best of both worlds – a great look at transition offense and team culture.
Jim Boone
(Rental)-Bulding Blocks Of The Pack Line Defense
$15.99
Building Blocks of the Pack Line Defense
Arkansas-Fort Smith men’s basketball coach Jim Boone has built a career around the pressure pack line defense. Boone has over 550 wins at the NCAA Division I and II levels. He took West Virginia Wesleyan to three NCAA Division II tournament appearances and won the 2014 and 2019 Gulf South Conference championships while at Delta State.
With his 25-plus years of head coaching experience, Coach Boone reveals his philosophy and teaching knowledge of the pack line defense. It’s a defense that will keep opponents off guard, out of the paint, and force them into tough shots.
You will see a number of drills all designed to maximize ball pressure while, at the same time, sealing gaps against ball penetration into the paint. Coach Boone demonstrates the Jump Up, Jump Back and Leverage Seeking close out drills. These are extremely effective for training the proper rotations of the defense.
The 4-on-4 Transition drill is another one that helps teach the pack line defense. Players learn to guard against mismatches and learn how to improve their on-floor communication. Both are important in the pack line defense.
The final segment of the video features Coach Boone in a question and answer session covering topics like defending the post and how to guard great shooters. He also shares insights on how to get the most out of your players and how to get them to buy into you, the system, and the overall mission of the program.
The pack line defense will make your team “nasty” when you install it. It can be effective at any level. The pack line keeps opponents off guard and forces them into tough shots by keeping them out of the paint.

Greg Kampe: Bunch Series & Change of Pace Offensive Sets
Use these Basketball Offense Plays for a spark for your offense? When you are faced with an opponent’s scoring run, wouldn’t you like to have an easy way to stop it? Oakland University head coach Greg Kampe opens up his playbook to offer you a number of change of pace quick-hitting plays designed to get you back in games.
Coach Kampe has over 600 career wins and was a four-time Summit League Coach of the Year while at Oakland. He spends time in this on-court video sharing with you some of his best quick hitters. You will see plays to generate easy scoring opportunities from the post and from 3-point range in this wonderfully entertaining video that also includes a unique variation of defending ball screens.
Basketball Offense Plays Quick Hitters
Kampe coaches an up-tempo offense at Oakland and has over 100 different basketball offense plays that he uses to create scoring chances in the half-court. You will see many of these plays in this video. One of the key items you will find is how Coach Kampe uses simple terminology to help his players learn concepts faster.
Kampe introduces the Bunch Series, which is a group of plays that have an option for each player on the floor to get a look from their prime shooting spot. Bunch Corner, for example, is a staple of Coach Kampe’s offense and has a number of options to get someone an easy scoring opportunity.
Kampe also shares with you the Choice Series, which can open up shots outside the 3-point arc, inside the lane, and on penetrating drives. Each basketball offense plays is taught 5-on-0 and then progresses to a 5-on-5 situation so that players see how a defense reacts. Kampe’s biggest coaching point is for players to simply follow the rules of the play. Being disciplined is the key to these plays being successful.
Defending The Ball Screen
Ball screen defenses are built upon communication and Coach Kampe’s is no different. While built on communication, Kampe’s philosophy of defending ball screens is much different than what is considered normal. In this segment, Kampe will explain how he handles ball screens. It may be unconventional, but you will see as players get into the action how Kampe’s philosophy works.
Labeling Shooters
With the aid of analytics, Kampe is able to better defend opponents. Labeling shooters and where they make shots from has a great impact on defending ball screens. Kampe’s defenses take that into account. Coach’s defense will defend shooters, hedge/close out non-shooters, and force opponents to take a low percentage shot.
There is something for everyone in this 81-minute, on-court video. Coach Kampe’s quick hitters are a great addition to any offense and his take on ball screen defense is unique but very successful. Rent this basketball offense plays & defending the ball screen DVD today.
Mike Divilbiss
(Rental)-Buzz Defense Breakdown Drills & Special Situations
$18.99
The Buzz Defense: Breakdown Defense Drills & Special Situations
With over 30 years of college coaching experience, Mike Divilbiss presents the Buzz Defense, a fast-paced trapping zone defense that completely disrupts an opponent’s offensive attack. In the video, Coach Divilbiss teaches the breakdown drills you can use to teach players how to move, react, and rebound out of the Buzz defense. You will also see how to prepare the Buzz defense for a number of special situations that often arise during a game.
Breakdown Drills
Coach Divilbiss explains a number of drills and starts with one that teaches guards to move from on-ball defense to another “home base” on the floor. Defenders sprint from one pass to the next while trying to get deflections and disrupt the offense’s movement. Players also work on trapping, defending one- or two-guard fronts, and taking away passing lanes.
The Inside Drill teaches the bottom three players in the Buzz how to move and rotate should the ball get past the two trapping guards. Players develop an uncanny ability to anticipate the next pass while also learning what to do when the ball is skipped, goes to the corner, or enters the high post.
One of the keys in playing a zone defense is making sure your athletes are trained in how to rebound. Coach Divilbiss reviews where players must rotate to and the spots on the floor they need to cover when a shot goes up. If not trained properly, rebounding can become difficult in the zone defense.
Special Situations Defense Drills
Divilbiss has watched over the years as opponents attempt to break down the Buzz. As a result, he has come up with plenty of adjustments. He reviews the most common things teams do to beat the Buzz. He also reviews defending out of bounds situations, adjusting to a 1-4 high set, best times to trap, and how to cover in defensive transition.
Coach Divilbiss owes his success to the Buzz defense and gives you the drills needed to ensure it operates at its best. Empower your players to play great defense and watch the wins pile up this season! Rent this breakdown defense drills DVD today.

You will have five different options in the same formation. It is also extremely difficult to scout or guard with five options.
He also displays his 40 series, baseline below versus a zone and a special play for when you need a 3-pointer.
