He was one of the all-time great college point guards and he owes it to a strong regimen of ball handling and shooting skills. Steve Alford was a two-time All-American and national champion while playing for Bob Knight at Indiana. He also earned an Olympic gold medal playing for Team USA in the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Now, Alford is the head coach at Nevada. He previously served at UCLA, New Mexico, Iowa, Southwest Missouri State, and Division III Manchester. Alford is a three-time Mountain West Coach of the Year and part of the reason why is what you will see in this on-court clinic video. Alford takes you through his updated All-American workout that he used with his players at New Mexico. It’s a 50 to 60 minute workout that includes 10 drills and 100 free throws.

Coach Alford takes players through the workout stressing the keys to each drill. He also tells his players to evaluate themselves constantly so they can improve their weaknesses. The drills include the following:

  • Half-court ball handling
  • Full-court ball handling and shooting
  • Half-court dribble weapons
  • Ball screen work
  • Shots on the move from range
  • Shots on the move across the top
  • 1-on-1 live
  • Spot shots
  • Spin and catch
  • 21

After each drill, players shoot 10 free throws before moving to the next one. By the end of the workout, you have accomplished a lot. Players have worked on individual fundamentals, endurance and conditioning, and free throw shooting.

This updated All-American workout is a fantastic tool to use during preseason workouts. It can also be used for players to work on their skills during the summer time.
