Drills to Reduce Turnovers in Basketball & Post Play
In today’s modern game of basketball, successful post play is becoming a lost art. In this video, Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard shares some of his favorite post drills that can be taught to new incoming players or to veterans looking to brush up on their fundamental basketball skills.
Gard took over for the legendary Bo Ryan at Wisconsin and has taken the Badgers to a pair of Sweet Sixteen appearances. After spending 23 years as an assistant to Ryan, Gard became the 2016 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year in 2016. Coach Gard took over the Badgers program at midseason and led them to a 15-8 record and the Sweet Sixteen. In addition to post play drills, Coach Gard offers some ideas on how players can reduce the number of turnovers they commit.
Eliminate Turnovers
With nearly three decades of coaching experience under his belt, Coach Gard uses some of the simplest drills to reduce turnovers in basketball that teach the basic fundamentals of basketball and takes them one step further. Coach Gard will explain how he uses these drills to help players commit fewer turnovers.
In a turnover situation, there is usually a passer and receiver with the passer often taking too much of the blame for a turnover. The receiver is often just as guilty, and Gard spends some time discussing different aspects of the turnover on the receiving end. Then, he drills how these turnovers might be prevented by using a simple passing drill to work on both passing and receiving skills.
Post Play
The next portion of the video gets into post play where Coach Gard presents a variety of drills. The drills are comprehensive including some that address skills prior to the post feed. One of Gard’s favorites is “Football,” which helps to develop toughness in your post players. The drill forces post players to compete on the low block. Skills like sealing the post and using a variety of post moves are taught here. Coach Gard also includes two variations of “Football” that can be used to increase competition.
This 46-minute video is perfect for teaching quality post play and how to eliminate turnovers. For coaches looking to take care of every single detail within their programs, this is a definite to include in your coaching video library. Rent this Drills to Reduce Turnovers in Basketball DVD today.
