Effective Practice Drills for Individual Skill Development
Looking to build your players’ skill development? Legendary junior college coach Steve Schmidt does just that in this video where he uses on-court demonstrations to take you through 13 different drills that help players develop better handling, shooting, passing, and footwork skills.
Schmidt, the head coach at Mott Community College in Michigan, is the winningest active coach at the NJCAA level with nearly 700 wins and a winning percentage of .822. His teams have been to eight Final Fours and have won four national titles. Sixteen of his players have earned All-American recognition and four have been the NJCAA player of the year.
The presentation begins with an on-court ball handling routine that develops players ball handling skills and improves their confidence with the ball in their hands. The routine includes both full- and half-court drills in an effort to build players’ weak hands and teach dribble moves so they can run the offense.
After ball handling drills comes passing drills. Coach Schmidt’s 3-Man Passing Drills work on passing and catching on the move as well as weak hand development and hand-eye coordination. The ability to pass and catch under control can help influence the next move a player can make. During each of the drills, Coach Schmidt offers up coaching tips that have helped his players become successful.
Coach Schmidt then dives into a series of footwork and shooting drills with the idea that players can become a threat from any position on the floor if they work at it. Watch as Schmidt teaches players to get to the rim in only one dribble. Learn how players can incorporate jump stops, layups, reverse layups, and right-left foot combination shots that will help them score from anywhere in the paint.
Coach Schmidt’s presentation is an outstanding way to refine your players’ skills and take your team to the next level!
