Competing with Undersized Players
Most teams are not blessed with superior size and athletic talent on a year-in, year-out basis. Matt Hixenbaugh has won wherever he has been by using some very simple offensive and defensive tactics. He shows you how in this video.
Coach Hixenbaugh went 57-28 at Trinity Prep in Florida and 45-16 at Winter Park HS where he also won a 6A State Coach of the Year award. In this video, he teaches some basic offensive actions that help build players’ skills and confidence.
Inverted Offense Basketball
Coach Hixenbaugh shows you the Inverted Offense basketball system, which is part motion and part read-and-react. He brings bigger players away from the basket, which also brings bigger defenders away from the basket. The keys to the system are:
- Flexibility in player placement in order to attack the opponent’s weakest link
- Achieve makeable shots, primarily layups, that are created by design within the scheme
- Use the ball movement and motion to control tempo and eliminate turnovers
- Eliminate a size disadvantage by inverting guards and posts
Using 5-on-0 actions, you will see how Coach Hixenbaugh uses three breakdown drills and three buildup drills to teach the inverted basketball offense. As the drills progress, a new player is added as is a new layer to the offense. Players learn to read the defense and take what is given.
The offensive segment ends with a 5-on-5 scrimmage where the scoring system is changed to reinforce Coach Hixenbaugh’s offensive philosophy.
“Tipping” Zone Defensive Tactics
On defense, Coach Hixenbaugh shows you how to “tip” your zone defense toward the opponent’s best player. This helps to improve rebounding against bigger teams. The zone is a modified version of a 3-2 zone where the bottom defenders are to “tip” the rebound to a teammate.
Coaches around the country are at the mercy of the players they get in their program. They are not all blessed with great athletic talent, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be competitive. Gaining an edge can make the difference and Coach Hixenbaugh shows you how in this video.
