Open Practice: Defense Drills
Defense is always a hot-button topic among coaches at all levels. In this open practice video, Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing takes you through a full practice full of drills that will make your defense better. Coach Lansing hits on three defensive fundamentals and much more that will help your players become better individual defenders thereby making your team defense stronger.
Shell Drills
Learn how to run the shell drill three different ways to teach concepts such as defending ball screens, doubling the post, and playing defense in transition.
Defend Ball Screens: Coach Lansing shows you how to defend ball screens with his over action. The on-ball defender fights through the screen while the screener defender helps before recovering.
Double the Post: After an entry pass, the post puts the ball on the floor. This is when the double team occurs. When the ball comes out of the post, a scramble situation is taught to close out on the ball.
Full Court Shell: This is a three possession drill with full-court man defense. The defense must communicate in order to get matched up and into proper help position.
Closeout Drills
Coach Lansing shares four drills that teach a different form of closeout depending upon the situation. All players must be able to closeout to take away an opponent’s shot. The drills include the Diagonal Closeout which teaches technique in closing out to gaps in the defense and on a skip pass. The Three Line Closeout is a drill with constant motion and serves as a good warmup to begin a defensive session.
Toughness Drills to Teach Blockouts
A culture of toughness is built through two drills that teach blockouts and the value of outworking your opponent. Morningside is a 2-on-2 drill that works on blocking out and finishing through contact. 5-on-5 Blockout is a structured drill that allows coaches to choose an exact spot for a blockout to occur.
Transition Drills
Coach Lansing takes his team through full-court drills to train defensive transition and recovery. You will see how the drill flows into a few back-and-forth possessions before it is stopped and Lansing corrects his athletes and offers a few adjustments. The 11-Man Drill and Full-Court Shell are used to improve transition defense.
This video offers the basic fundamentals of defense and a number of drills that can develop both individual and team defense. Take your defense and rebounding to the next level with Coach Lansing’s high-intensity and highly informative open practice video.
Steve Pikiell
(Rental)-Creative Play Calling
$18.99
Steve Pikiell: Creative Play Calling
For the coach that is currently in or taking over a program that struggles, this video from Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell can help you become more competitive. Pikiell was the first player for legendary UConn head coach Jim Calhoun to become a Division I head coach when he took over at Stony Brook in 2005. Pikiell slowly rebuilt the program into an America East Conference power. He shows you how to get more with less and adds in some set plays and inbounds plays that you can use in your programs.
The Importance of Vocabulary and Communication
Successful teams are the ones that are able to communicate in a quick, efficient manner. Coach Pikiell shows you how to develop such a system to make sure you and your players are on the same page. One of the big reasons for a simple communication system is to package plays. Pikiell’s teams have been able to create lots of scoring opportunities by utilizing communication in the Wide series. In this series, Pikiell uses a variety of screens and other actions to get all of his players involved. Ultimately, Coach Pikiell takes advantage of his players’ best skills and uses them to the team’s advantage. Communication helps in doing so.
Developing an Identity
One of the big steps in rebuilding a program is the developing of an identity. Since there is no single identity that is “best,” Pikiell gives some ideas as to how one might go about developing an identity and coming up with at least one thing a team “can hang its hat on.”
One of the ideas is the use of the 1-3-1 zone defense. Pikiell presents the 1-3-1 and using it as a half-court trap to take advantage of a team’s personnel. Another idea is the use of the 2-2-1 press and adjusting it to fit different levels of talent. Pikiell discusses the idea of “no middle, no layup, good defense” as something a team could hang its hat on.
Getting Victories with Inbounds Plays
Pikiell believes you can build confidence in a program and one of the ways to do so is through inbounds plays. In this segment, Coach Pikiell presents a number of inbounds plays from a box alignment and then goes into a few more from the double-stack alignment. He even shows you how to take advantage of a “screen magnet” and free up a player under the basket for an easy basket.
With experience in rebuilding programs, Pikiell stresses the idea of building a system that suits your personnel. Keep things simple and design a system that can adapt and adjust depending upon personnel and situation.
Matt Painter

OPEN PRACTICE: DEVELOPING INTERCHANGEABLE PERIMETER AND POST PLAYERS
MATT PAINTER
ABOUT THE COACH
He is the head coach at Purdue University. He was part of the team who won the 2017 big 10 regular season. He has also been able to win about three titles in the big ten. He is also the coach of the year on three occasions for the Big Ten regular and he has also served as the assistant coach of the under-19 national team where they finished first.
ABOUT THE VIDEO
The talent of your players would do you no good if you have terrible tactics both offensively and defensively. Therefore, it is important that you develop the skills of your players as early as you can. This coach shows you in this video how to approach any skill development program by using the same drills which the Purdue Boilermakers use in their practice session. This program also identifies with the concept of motion offence which is also used by Purdue Boilermakers.
This video would afford most coaches an opportunity to teach their students effectively on how they can develop their skills effectively. There a number of concepts which would be highlighted and then basic screen which highlights his motion offence concept would also be looked at in the video. This would be accompanied by post feeds and ideas which would help to make your practice more effective. We shall start with Perimeter Breakdown Drills
THE PERIMETER BREAKDOWN DRILLS
This drill is composed of about eight smaller drills whose job is to ensure that your players spend their session working out every part of their body. These drills would allow your players to be able to work on various tactics which would allow them to be able to stop offensive plays which are designed to tear them apart.
Painter also shows coaches how to teach and develop their post players. He does this by through the help of some practice drills. These drills show the players how to ensure that the paint is completely locked down in a match and teaches these players how to defend against drills and set plays that are pick and roll in nature. These post players would be interested in learning how to dribble and score through many methods including ball screens. This can be developed during the two breakdown shooting drills which would ensure that the post players improve when it comes to scoring.
LIVE SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Once the players in practice have been able to perfect a new set play around the rim area, it is now important that these skills which have been learnt should be used to make sure that they score in a real game situation. That is why Coach Purdue ensures that this happens by sharing them into five against five and allowing them to test the new move which they have been able to perfect. This would see the players probably doing up to 40 motion offences.
This video would be able to show how coaches can develop the skill of their players through these exercises.

5x District Champions
4x Time District "Coach Of The Year"
Spread offense, once "new", has become a standard for all levels of football. Coach Johnston is an expert in the Spread Shot-Wing and shares his views on how to defend it. From a defensive perspective, there are two basic concepts that must be understood: what the offensive numbers advantage is and who has duel responsibilities. The opposing coach will draw an imaginary line across the field from the center of the field, and then attack the side with the fewest number of defenders. This is called number advantage. Johnston illustrates his points using game footage. Johnston uses the whiteboard to show how an opponent will decide which defender is responsible for duel responsibility. Spread coaches who want to run won't move from their base run attack. Johnston outlines the keys to stopping Spread coaches from using the FB trap, sweep and HB Power. The depth of your corners as well as the lateral position and safety of your free safety will be key factors in defending the pass. Johnston outlines his five core principles for defending the Spread Shot Wing.
