Complete Post Player Development
Dean Lockwood has developed some of the premier post players in NCAA women’s basketball, including the likes of 2013 WNBA MVP Candace Parker. During Lockwood’s tenure as an assistant at the University of Tennessee, the Vols have won seven SEC tournament titles, five regular season titles, and two national championships (2007 & 2008). Part of the success of the Tennessee program comes from Lockwood’s ability to develop post players. In this video, you will see exactly how he does it.
The Four “Roller Principles” of Post Play
Coach Lockwood explains his philosophy of post player development and then gets right into the four basic fundamentals: getting open, sealing a defender, catching the ball, and scoring easily. You will see WNBA player Isabelle Harrison demonstrate sealing in transition with the “leg whip” and the “pin & spin” techniques.
Passing and Catching Series
Post players must be able to catch the ball or teammates will not trust them. You will see six drills that train post players to react quickly with soft hands and even secure bad passes. The Stop, Pivot, & Rip drill works on driving to the basket after the catch helping post players become more dynamic offensive threats.
Footwork Series
Coach Lockwood uses five drills to teach post players how to fight for position and seal a defender so they can catch a pass. You will see the “U-ing” technique which is used to maintain a seal while a defender fights to get around it. The V-Cut, Seal, & Receive drill trains post players to use the “SEC” concept to set up a defender and get in the best post up position.
Transition Series
The Post Highway Layup drill teaches players to sprint for over-the-top passes in transition. You will also see the Tennessee Transition drill which helps posts seal a defender under the rim for an easy basket.
Finishing Series
Coach Lockwood uses a few drills to work on finishing moves. Rapid Fire Finishing is a drill to get players to use a quick pivot for power layups. The 180 Turn drill teaches players to use a duck-in to receive a pass and then utilize a quarter-turn pivot to score. Intensity Layups expands post players’ games to the high post where they can be scoring threats from the elbows.
Scoring Series
A series of nine moves are used on the block. Players are encouraged to develop their go-to move and a counter to go along with it. Three options help players extend their range.
Game Situations
Coach Lockwood then applies all the drill work into the Tennessee offensive system. You will see how posts play in ball screens and how they relocate off of dribble penetration. For teams with dangerous post players, Lockwood’s video is a must-have! Rent this post player development DVD today.

Sean Miller’s Skill Development School: Post Workout
Arizona head basketball coach Sean Miller has six regular season and conference tournament titles, three Pac-12 Coach of the Year awards, and five trips to the Sweet Sixteen under his belt already in his time with the Wildcats. Part of his success is due to his development of post players. In this video, Coach Miller teaches you how to build dominant post players that can play in the low post, away from the basket, and even in transition.
Using on-court demonstrations, Miller shows you the workout he uses to build post players. You will see four different shooting series, three 1-on-1 post move drills, three off the lane fade series drills, and three cutting series drills.
Shooting Series
Coach Miller’s shooting series will gradually build your players’ offensive skill set from jump shots to put-back, post moves, and counter moves. In the series of drills, Coach Miller emphasizes consistent footwork as a key to increasing a player’s field goal percentage. The shooting drills include:
One Two Step Shooting: Players are forced to focus on the proper footwork right before taking the shot. This emphasis on footwork creates the base for players to increase their field goal percentage.
Shooting on the Move: While around the basket skills are the basis for scoring for post players, they must also learn to become effective shooters on the move.
Toughness Series: Players go through a set of 10 drills using a heavy basketball. These drills work hand-eye coordination, give players a better feel around the basket, develop the weak hand, and provide a tough conditioning workout.
Situational Drills
Coach Miller uses situational drills to help players learn to use what has been taught in real game situations. The transition series, for example, simulates the post player running the floor in the fast break and getting into scoring position early in the possession. The catch and finish series teaches players to catch the basketball and finish at the rim. The emphasis again is on proper footwork in cutting and shooting. Offensive rebounding is another skill that is covered so that post players learn to score easy buckets around the basket.
Players also work on more common situations where they must go 1-on-1 with a defender. In this set of drills, Coach Miller teaches players how to be effective scorers from the low post as well as what to do when help defense arrives. The final part of Miller’s presentation deals with “off the lane” drills. As post players are pushed off the lane, a strong face-up move is taught to create good scoring opportunities.
Coach Miller’s School of Skill Development does an excellent job of addressing the fundamental skills necessary to develop tough, fundamentally sound post scoring machines.
Rob Senderoff
(Rental)-Skill Development For Post Players

Skill Development for Post Players
Improve the development of your post players with this progressive workout routine from Kent State head coach Rob Senderoff. With 25 years of coaching experience including the last eight as head coach of the Golden Flashes, Senderoff has focused his on post player development. He has devised a system featuring over 14 drills and variations that can build well-rounded post skills. The workout is a challenge and builds confidence in posts’ play around the basket.
Post player development begins from the ground up and starts with the ability to handle the basketball to create space in the post. Coach Senderoff uses everyday equipment to take players through a series of drills to make their normal motions become automatic. When game time comes, post players are more fluid and more confident. In each drill, Senderoff helps players develop an aggressive mentality that includes finishing off of two feet and going strong to the rim.
Coach Senderoff puts a great deal of stress on the hook shot, a fundamental shot in Senderoff’s repertoire. Players go through a warmup series of hook shots and then Coach Senderoff teaches a counter move as well. For Senderoff, post players don’t need a bunch of different moves. They need a few counters for the basic hook shot, which Coach Senderoff goes on to teach.
The Chair Drill series is introduced and demonstrated as a means to give post players confidence in being successful at finishing around the rim against any opponent. You will see a go-to move along with a counter move both with and without using a dribble. These techniques will help make post players unstoppable around the rim against any defender.
Coach Senderoff also introduces the Duke series. Post players gain another means of scoring as they learn to face up and attack the rim using a variety of jabs, bump fakes, rip throughs, and footwork. This adds another element to the post player.
Building the complete post player takes athletes that are willing to work hard and train with an open mind. Coach Senderoff’s warmup and in-depth look at how to be successful playing the post can build stronger, more successful post players who can become unstoppable forces in the paint.

Danny Manning

Post Player Drills for Advanced Skill Development
Teach your players how to dominate the post in this video from one of the great post players in NCAA history, Danny Manning. Now the head coach at Wake Forest, Manning shares a series of advanced drills designed to develop a post player’s all-around skills.
Manning won a national championship while a player at Kansas in 1988. He also served as an assistant under Bill Self at Kansas before moving on to Tulsa where he won the 2014 Conference USA title and was named the conference coach of the year.
Fundamental Post Player Drills
In the video, Coach Manning begins with a breakdown of a fundamental but almost indefensible move – the jump hook. Manning takes you through five phases and shows you how to use the move to create easy scoring opportunities.
Footwork is a key to becoming a great post player. From working the half-court to full-court sprint and seal, players learn the proper footwork needed to create scoring opportunities. Coach Manning uses 1-on-1 and 1-on-2 drills to teach post players how to read a defense and score in any situation. He adds a cardio element to the drill as well as a run-and-seal action to initiate it.
Moves On The Block
Players then move to the block where they learn how to master the shot fake. Manning emphasizes the shot fake with every move to take advantage of defenders and to draw the old-fashioned three-point play. You’ll see the Double Chop Drill where players learn to create separation by attacking the hip of their defender.
Moves off the Block
Continuing in the video, Coach Manning takes players off the block to work on jab steps, cradle dribbles, cheat steps, and crossovers. You will learn nine post moves players can master off the block. Players learn the footwork first and do it slowly so they do not develop bad habits.
Coach Manning includes seven different hand-eye coordination drills to help develop your players’ hands. He uses a variety of equipment like tennis balls and medicine balls to put players through a dynamic workout.
As Kansas’s all-time leading scorer, Coach Manning was able to score at will around the rim. In this video, he takes his knowledge and experience as an elite post player and teaches it to you. This is a must-have piece of any coach’s collection. Rent this Post Player Drills DVD today.

Skill Development Workout: Centers
Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall gives you the tools needed to develop a quality center in this video. The one-hour workout consists of a number of game-like drills that will improve the play of your post players. Marshall knows a thing or two about post play having developed several very good ones during his tenure with the Shockers. His Wichita State teams have won seven regular season or conference tournament championships and his 2013 team went to the Final Four. With over 500 career wins and 14 trips to the NCAA tournament, Coach Marshall understands the skill development of all players including centers.
The Warm Up
The warm up consists of a series of drills presented in a game-like fashion. The movements are over-exaggerated during the drills to create muscle memory for the athlete. Included in the warm up, is a Mikan drill series where players use big and heavy balls to help get them stronger. By the end of the series of drills, players are loose and ready for the remainder of the workout.
Post Series
Throughout the entire workout, Coach Marshall emphasizes the position of the center’s feet both on offense and defense. The Drop Set series is one that focuses on footwork and court positioning so that players can properly execute the drop step. Players learn to recognize double teams and then learn how to react in one part of the series. In another set, players use the drop step and work on jump hooks.
Passing
A good passing center makes teammates better and makes the center an even bigger offensive threat. Coach Marshall uses the heavy balls and goes through a series of fundamental passing drills to improve a post player’s passing skills. Marshall also incorporates an outlet passing drill off of a defensive rebound.
1-on-1
The workout culminates with the Finish Drill where centers work on both offense and defense starting at the elbow. The next drill has the centers playing live 1-on-1 continuously.
Coach Marshall’s presentation is one that is highly technical. You can learn how to correct flaws in your post players. If you run the four-out one-in motion offense, this video is an absolute must. It can also be used by any team because of how it addresses some of the fundamentals of basketball.

Dave Vander Meulen

$18.99
Post Play to Dominate the Paint
Effective post play can help teams win championships. Dave Vander Meulen, former head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, discusses his post play training techniques in this video. Vander Meulen was the head coach at UWW for 23 years accumulating 440 wins, a .707 winning percentage, and two NABC Division III Coach of the Year awards. Watch as Coach Vander Meulen gives you drills and skills to teach post play on both sides of the ball.
Body Control
Successful post play starts with understanding how to use your body as a weapon. If a post player knows how a defender is playing him, he can use his body to open up scoring lanes. Coach Vander Meulen goes into detail about how players should stay wide to create position and open up space to operate. Developing a feel for where a defender is can help a post player generate scoring opportunities and open passing lanes.
Counters
All post players have a set of moves they like to use. Over time, defenders will learn to take away their most effective scoring moves. Posts must then develop counters to these moves. If a post player has a great baseline scoring move, he must also have a counter for when a defender takes away the baseline.
Coach Vander Meulen covers the drop step baseline, up and under, face up, and hook shot moves. He then helps posts work on developing an effective counter move when these moves are taken away.
Straddle the Leg
By straddling the leg of a post player, a post defender is able to “half” the offensive player’s body. This allows the defender to cover the top and the bottom sides at the same time and prevents the defender from getting sealed. You will see Coach Vander Meulen explain how to use this technique and use your body to move with the offensive player. This makes it tough for an entry pass while also taking away passing lanes.
Many of the basics of post play are reviewed by Coach Vander Meulen in one convenient package. This video can help your post players score more by using their best moves as well as their counters. Defensively, your post players will become more adept at controlling their body allowing them to improve their defensive play.

Post Player Development – Dominate in the Paint
One of the best kept secrets in college basketball is Texas A&M women’s assistant coach Bob Starkey. Coach Starkey has been a part of over 700 career wins in his 34 years of college coaching. He is best known for his ability to teach and develop low post players. While serving as an assistant to the LSU men’s basketball team, Coach Starkey mentored Shaquille O’Neal, a two-time NBA Finals MVP.
In this post player development video, Coach Starkey breaks down how to develop the low post game. You will get decades of knowledge that will help you teach players the nuances of playing on the low block. In addition to ideas on maintaining seals, moves to get open, and more; Coach Starkey presents 12 drills that are used currently by Texas A&M women’s team to help them dominate the paint.
Fundamentals of Post Play
Coach Starkey’s presentation begins with the fundamentals of post play beginning with how to catch the ball inside the post box. From getting into an athletic stance to four different ways to beat defenses trying to deny the post, Starkey helps you learn how to teach post players to create space and score more easily.
Big Man Ball Handling
An often overlooked facet of post player’s game is ball handling. Coach Starkey takes his players through a series of six drills all designed to improve dribbling, catching, and passing. Post players that can perform these fundamentals with ease are big men who do not turn the ball over and score more often. You will see a few Two-Ball Handling drills that help to maximize your practice efficiency by improving both hands at once. One-Handers is a drill to help post players develop soft hands when calling for the ball in the post.
Scoring Moves
Less is more in Coach Starkey’s philosophy related to scoring moves. Starkey believes you can maximize a post player’s scoring efficiency by having the player focus on a minimum number of scoring moves. Coach will show you the three primary moves he likes and how to teach them. He will also show you when a post should and should not dribble and you will view the toughest version of the Mikan Drill that you have ever seen.
At 64 minutes, this post player development video is so full of information by one of college basketball’s most experienced assistants that you will want to go back and replay it again and again! Rent this Post Player Development DVD today.

Elite Level Post Player Drills & Development
To develop their skills at an elite level, NBA players like Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry turn to professional basketball trainer Rob Mcclanaghan. He has helped develop some of the game’s best post players and in this presentation he takes you through the same drills he uses with the likes of Anthony Davis and the WNBA’s Candace Parker.
Players learn how to create scoring opportunities with their back to the basket. McClanaghan works on catching and facing up, duck-ins, rebounding, and more. Regardless of position, players learn to become more effective scorers.
Back to the Basket Post Player Drills
The work beings close to the rim which helps players build the skills they need to progress and move further away from the basket. For every move and drill, Coach McClanaghan teaches the details that players need in order to beat defenders and score around the rim using no dribble, one dribble, or a combination of the two.
For each move, McClanaghan teaches a counter move to keep defenders off balance. The Turnaround Series helps players develop patience in working near the rim. They learn to use effective footwork, stay low, and beat defenders in the low post.
Catch and Face Post Player Drills
Post players move from the low block to the mid- and high post. To be effective in scoring from these areas, players must be able to catch the ball and square up to the basket to create scoring opportunities. Coach McClanaghan teaches a number of drills, which can all be used on the perimeter as well. This helps make post players more versatile.
By using the Jab Step, Coach McClanaghan shows a series of moves and counters that allow players to rip and attack the basketball using a spin back, 1-2 shot, or pushback shot.
Duck-Ins, Rebounding, and Trail Shot Post Player Drills
The final segment in the presentation involves duck-in moves and rebounding around the basket. Having these finishing skills is vital for any post player, especially against strong defenders. Coach McClanaghan talks about “holding the seal” which can help any post player gain an advantage when using these finishing moves.
You will see a great rebounding drill that helps develop quickness and hand-eye coordination. Players also learn to rebound, gain control, and finish on the offensive end. Post Player Drills - For An Undersized Post Player
Post play is almost a forgotten art these days. In this presentation by former NBA All-Star Adrian Dantley and former NBA assistant coach Barry Hecker, learn how to develop the undersized post player. Dantley was one of the best small forwards to dominate the post. He was just as effective in the post as he was on the wing and most of that can be attributed to his work on the fundamentals of post play.
In this video, Dantley shares a workout for post players that should become a daily routine, in-season as well as in the offseason. They are the same drills that led to his successful career and eventual induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Developing Footwork & Finishing
The workout starts with footwork in the post and progresses to automating finishes close to the basket. The routine ends with techniques for turning athletes into tough scoring machines.
Also included in the video is a segment on the hook shot. It is one of the most underused moves in today’s game, but was the go-to move for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s all-time scoring leader. Dantley demonstrates the move, teaches it, and then shows you how to combine it with other moves to finish at the rim. Even smaller players can use the hook shot to avoid being blocked by taller players.
Fundamental Drills for the Low Post
Dantley then shifts to the low post where he shows you the fundamental drills he used to develop his game. One of the staples is the Mikan Drill, which can help any player be more efficient around the hoop. Dantley also works the drop step another effective way to seal defenders and attack the rim.
During his career, Dantley was a complete player and took defenders to the perimeter. He shares drills and techniques he used there as well. He demonstrates the forward pivot and reverse pivot and how to use the pivot to increase scoring options.
This on-court demonstration comes from one of the game’s all-time greats and is great for motivated young players and coaches who want to develop their post play from the ground up. Rent this post player drills development for the undersized post today.

For example, when his players pass they are to pass to the appropriate hand (the one away from the defender). They are to cut with a purpose. They must always be aware of a potential scoring opportunity and should be able to see any threat of an approaching double-team.
Players go through a number of half-court and full-court drills in the forward workout. The Mikan drill is a staple used to teach players how to keep the ball high and away from guards and how to finish at the rim. Other drills teach players to screen properly and to how to cut after the screen. A competitive shooting drill is used to put players in spots where they will shoot from in games.

Coach Marshall shows you how to adapt the drill to your defensive system. Your players learn how to move within your own defense whether it is on-ball defense or help side defense. You will also see how Marshall incorporates the heavy basketball to help players feel confident and strong with a regular basketball.

He was one of the most difficult centers to guard during his 16-year NBA career. In this video, Cartwright shares the drills he learned as a player and picked up as a coach in the NBA and at the international level.

Strong Scoring Drills
Cartwright emphasizes that players must be strong when attacking the post with the dribble. To work on that skill, Cartwright shares a series of dribbling drills for posts. They work on developing a strong, go-to dribble move to create scoring opportunities around the rim. Cartwright demonstrates the Lopez Drill where players learn to seal their man off with their legs and then use a power dribble to score from any angle on the floor. The Claim the Ball Series teaches players to clear out opponents in order to take up space and attack the basket.
4 Ways to Enter to the Post
