Shaka Smart: Havoc Pressure Defense Dvd by Shaka Smart Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Shaka Smart (Rental)-Shaka Smart: Havoc Pressure Defense Dvd $19.99
Shaka Smart: Havoc Pressure Defense Shaka Smart’s style of play is evident in the team’s he has coached. Smart, the current head coach at Texas, took mid-major Virginia Commonwealth to the Final Four in 2011 using a pressure defensive system that he refers to as Havoc. Smart’s VCU teams had four straight 27-win seasons and his Texas teams have been to two NCAA tournaments and have an NIT championship to their credit. Smart’s “Havoc” defense is much more than just running a press. It’s about mindset with its own philosophy and set of core values. In this video, Coach Smart begins there sharing the five core values that make up Havoc and have helped his teams be successful. Smart then breaks down the two full-court presses that helped his VCU teams in 2011-12 and 2012-13 lead the nation in steals and turnover margin. Teaching the Press The presentation then moves to the court where Coach Smart teaches the fundamental concept of how to trap. Players must learn to correctly close out a ball handler, force an obvious pass, and be “elastic” in the trap. Coach Smart gives off-the-ball directions and stresses proper space between your man and the ball. Coach Smart then walks his players through their responsibilities in the Double Fist man-to-man press. Smart does an excellent job in teaching the press. He goes through each step of the press and makes it so simple any coach could easily teach and install it with their team. The second press that Coach Smart breaks down is his version of the Diamond Press. Smart’s 1-2-1-1 attack is a great way to force opponents into bad spots and create scoring opportunities on the other end. Traps come quick and easy and offenses are forced to pass to weaker ball handlers. If you want to wreak havoc on your opponents, install the pressure defense from one of the college game’s top coaches. It’s the same system Coach Smart used to get to the Final Four. Shaka Smart's 2013 Basketball Coaches Clinic by Shaka Smart Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Shaka Smart (Rental)-Shaka Smart's 2013 Basketball Coaches Clinic $34.99
Shaka Smart Basketball: 2013 Coaches Clinic One of the brightest young coaches in college basketball, Shaka Smart built a winning program and Virginia Commonwealth and is doing the same at the University of Texas. This video, taken during Smart’s time at VCU, gives you an inside look at an early season practice. The session is fast-paced and focuses on individual and team defense, offensive skill work, and learning to execute the game plan in competitive scenarios. Defense All of Smart’s teams have been known for their intense pressure defense. The session begins with 3-on-3 to work on full-court defensive pressure skills. Players defend the ball, play on the ball side, and play on the help side. They learn to jump to the ball and work on trapping and defending against pin down screens. The Rapid Fire Drill works on closeout techniques and building the habit of a correct closeout. Coach Smart uses stations to work on the fundamentals necessary to play half-court defense. The use of stations helps Smart and his assistants maximize practice time by working on multiple defensive skills in a short amount of time. Players work on defending pin down screens, help-side defense, and playing the weak side exchange. Smart runs a number of different shell drills as well as disadvantage drills to train players to think one pass ahead and work on rotations. Offense Smart runs a high-low offense and all offensive skill development is done within the framework of that offense. Post players work on various moves. Perimeter players work on cutting and dribble penetration. All players work on the shots they will most likely take in games and Smart uses a variety of competitive shooting drills at different times throughout his practices. Later in the session, players walk through their different offenses. They will start in a 5-on-0 situation and work their way up to a live 5-on-5 where players can work on both offensive and defensive principles. Core Values of Shaka Smart Basketball In the second part of his presentation, Coach Smart takes the floor and talks about the core values of his program. You will learn why his players play so hard for him. Coach Smart talks about his “havoc” style of play and how it begins on the first day of practice with a full-court 1-on-1 drill. There is also a Q&A session that covers all aspects of Smart’s defense as well as a variety of topics including tracking practice statistics, the fundamentals of a defensive trap, building winners, and building a defense from 1-on-1 all the way to 5-on-5. Havoc Strength & Conditioning Program by Daniel Roose Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Daniel Roose (Rental)-Havoc Strength & Conditioning Program $19.99
The Havoc Strength & Conditioning Program The strength and conditioning of your players is critical to your team’s success during the season. Daniel Roose, strength and conditioning coach for men’s basketball at the University of Texas, takes you through a workout that prepares players to create havoc from the opening tip to the final buzzer. Roose is a nationally certified strength and conditioning coach who worked with Texas head coach Shaka Smart at Virginia Commonwealth University and moved to Texas with him. He begins his presentation by explaining that incoming players must learn the basics of strength training before they move into a workout similar to the one Roose shares. Dynamic Warmup The session begins with six dynamic warm-up phases to get blood flowing to the muscles and to increase the heart rate. With the six phases, you will see three general warm-ups to prepare the body for any workout and then three basketball-specific warm-ups. These serve to help players learn to control their body working on game-like movements. 5 Basic Movements for Strength & Conditioning Coach Roose then teaches the five basic training movements: squat, hinge, push, pull, and loaded carry. Four examples of each movement are provided. They are easy to replicate and coaches can choose which exercises to use based on players’ needs. Litvinov Method Roose uses the Litvinov Method to increase heart rate and condition players. It is somewhat non-conventional but helps players stay conditioned and not feel so beat up during the season. The Litvinov Method has a player perform a heavy lift from the basic movement section followed by a fast and explosive exercise. In addition, Coach Roose includes a metabolic workout and shows you how he uses it in-season and in the offseason. Teams at VCU and Texas have been some of the best defenses in the country in recent years and there is no question that some of it is related to the work Coach Roose has done. His workout is very well developed and can be used with athletes that have knowledge of the basic lifts. Use Coach Roose’s program to wreak havoc on opponents all season long!
