Open Basketball Practice with Gary Waters
Former Cleveland State head coach Gary Waters transformed the Vikings into a winner by developing the fundamentals needed to play a pressure style of defense and a continuity ball screen offense. In this video, Waters, the winningest coach in Cleveland State history, shows you how he organized practice and gives you some of the drills he used to lead to the Vikings to a 2011 Horizon League championship.
Warm ups for Basketball Practice
The first 15 minutes of each practice worked on individual player development with a heavy emphasis on individual skills. Guards work on ball handling and posts work on finishing at the rim. A number of ball handling drills are used while posts work on drop steps, jump hooks, and jump shots in the paint.
Part of the warmup at the beginning of practice also includes a series of dynamic stretches, jump rope, and agility ladders. These help to prepare the body as well as work on individual quickness and agility. Jumping rope is made competitive to help athletes increase foot speed. The team jumps in 30-second intervals with a goal of 100 to 120 repetitions.
Transition Drills for Basketball Practice
The next segment of practice is all about transition. Coach Waters works first on fast break offense before flipping to transition defense. Players spot up in transition in a full-court shooting drill. They also learn to start the break with an outlet drill where they work on a quick outlet pass. Coach Waters explains the transition offense and identifies the various scoring options.
The transition segment ends with a 5-on-5 ‘get back’ drill where the defense tries to recover from a disadvantage situation in the fast break. This a great drill for developing both offensive and defensive transition.
Defense Drills for Basketball Practice
To build proper defensive habits, Coach Waters shares a number of on-ball defense and close-out drills. You will see the basic rotations of his defense in the 4-on-4 Step Up Drill. There are also variations of the drill that will force the defense to change its rotations to stop dribble penetration.
Ball Screen Offense Drills for Basketball Practice
Coach Waters teaches his players the continuity ball screen offense by demonstrating the pattern and scoring options in a 5-on-0 setting. You will then see four breakdown drills that help to build the offense and train players to use the ball screen. You’ll see the whole offense in action in two different 5-on-5 scrimmages.
This is a great look inside how a coach designs a whole practice system to build a program from the ground up. Rent this basketball practice DVD today.
Greg McDermott
(Rental)-Open Practice With Greg Mcdermott

Basketball Practice Drills with Greg McDermott
Take a look behind the curtain at a typical Creighton University men’s basketball practice in this basketball practice drills video with Bluejays head coach Greg McDermott. You will see a variety of breakdown drills and a 4-on-4 shell drill all geared toward making your team better defenders. McDermott knows a thing or two about defense having taken Creighton to three Missouri Valley Conference tournament championships and the 2013 regular season title as well.
With the focus on defense, McDermott shares with you a series of drills that build from basic concepts to larger team strategies. Players demonstrate these individual skill drills as McDermott provides his insight. Two great drills are seen here:
Slide, Run and Pivot Drill: Players work on their defensive slides as they learn to explode into a move. Balance and footwork are the keys to success in this drill and in the game of basketball.
Ranger Drill: This breakdown drill teaches the proper defensive rotations in a baseline drive-and-kick situation. Players get into the correct defensive positions, take charges, and hustle to block out.
Coach McDermott works religiously with his players on closeouts. The ability to closeout is critical to building a sound team defense. McDermott uses two drills that help his players in this area.
Three Line Closeouts: Coach McDermott demonstrates three different closeouts players must be able to execute – the Kobe, Korver, and Rondo. Each is different but must be mastered in the Creighton system.
Berlin Closeouts: Players do not closeout their man in this drill. They work to the correct defensive position.
Basketball Practice Drills for Team Defense
Team defense is emphasized in the Shell Drill. Players must be able to deal with screens and McDermott discusses the components of screen defense. Finally, there is a 5-on-5 segment where you get to see the defensive concepts in action as well as some of Creighton’s offensive sets.
Coach McDermott does share some of his offensive breakdown drills for perimeter and post players. He uses offensive breakdown stations that include:
Guards: One More Drill, Shots Out of the Offense, Game Speed Cuts
Forwards: Flips, Figure 8 Shooting, Walling Up & Boxing Out
Coach McDermott’s practice is an excellent example of a fast-paced, well-balanced, and effective session. In 81 minutes, McDermott covers nearly every important aspect of defensive play offering something for everyone to take away. Rent this basketball practice drills DVD today.

Jerod Haase
(Rental)-Off-season Skill Development Workout
$17.99
Je Off-Season Basketball Skill Development Workout
Off-season basketball skill development can go a long way in determining how well a team will perform during the regular season. Stanford University head coach Jerod Haase has a proven method for improving players’ skill levels. His toolbox of drills includes many that date back to his association with coaching great Roy Williams.
Coach Haase shares with you a number of highly intense and competitive drills that can be used not only to improve skills, but also to keep athletes conditioned. The presentation begins with Coach Haase discussing how to approach skill development with a teammate on the court. He then goes into shooting drills that require players to get their footwork right. Coach Haase then shows how he incorporates “game action” into the drills as well as explaining how to avoid wasting time when doing any drill.
Ball Handling Development
The next part of the presentation focuses on ball handling. Coach Haase runs players through a number of stationary and on-the-move ball handling drills. Haase has one of his former players demonstrate the two-ball, on-the-move dribble workout, which is one of the highlights of the presentation. The idea of adding movement to the two-ball drill will challenge players to improve their ball handling skills.
Post Player Drills & Counters
Also presented is a post player workout. Haase likes his posts to develop a favorite move and a counter to it. They work on those skills to become great at a few things instead of just good at several skills. You will also see a great drill that teaches post players to own the block prior to receiving an entry pass.
Shooting Off the Dribble
Shooting from a stationary position is a critical skill, but having the ability to shoot off the dribble or on the move will determine a shooter’s greatness. Coach Haase shares a variety of drills to work these skills as well as a transition shooting drill. The drills are fun, competitive, and can be done with teammates or individually.
Coach Haase’s series of drills are designed to improve players’ skills and teach competition. They can easily help your players work hard in the offseason all while enjoying the process. Rent this basketball skill development DVD today.

Mike Procopio
(Rental)-Offensive & Defensive Team Development Drills
$15.99
Offensive & Defensive Drills
In this final part of his three-part series, Mike Procopio demonstrates how you can develop effective and savvy players using 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 drills. The Director/President of Hoop Consultants and the Director of Basketball Operations for ATTACK Athletics in Chicago, Procopio has worked with the likes of Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Caron Butler, and 75 other NBA players. It was Procopio’s work as Bryant’s coach that helped him help the Lakers to their last two NBA titles.
3v3 & 4v4 Shell Drills
From Building Your Half Court Offense with Shell Drills, players have developed the necessary fundamentals to run your offense. In this new video, Coach Procopio shows you how to implement those concepts into competitive 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 offensive & defensive drills. This system allows players to put up shots that they would normally take in a game.
In the 4-on-4 drills, the focus is pick-and-roll and screen-the-screener actions. These details were covered in earlier DVDs. Now, players can put them to use within a competitive setting. This is a great way to teach the fundamental understanding of 5-on-5 principles and movement.
In 3-on-3 action, Coach Procopio breaks down proper spacing, attacking angles, and cutting action within your offensive system. You will see several cuts – pin down, cross screen, and down screen – demonstrated. Beginning from a 3-on-0 situation, each action is implemented progressing to 3-on-3 where players again take game-like shots.
NBA Actions & Post Play
You will also learn how to incorporate popular NBA actions like Floppy and Zipper into your 3-on-0 breakdowns. This teaches players how to properly execute screens. Post players learn all the scoring options available to them and Coach Procopio goes into great detail about moving without the ball and maintaining great spacing.
All of Coach Procopio’s drills have specific options that allow players to be creative while focusing on the offense (or defense). With all of Procopio’s drills and insight, your teams will be able to run any offense with a better understanding of how it is supposed to work. Rent this offensive & defensive drills DVD today.
Tim McClellan
(Rental)-Off-season Strength & Conditioning
$15.99
Off Season Strength Training & Conditioning
Off season strength training is vital to any player’s success. The problem is that most strength and conditioning programs are just lifting weights and running mile after mile. There’s more to it than that and Tim McClellan (M.S., C.S.C.S.), a private strength and conditioning coach, can train you to reach your goals.
McClellan has trained over 200 NCAA All-Americans, a number of Olympic gold medalists, and even professionals in eight different sports. You can “hire” Coach McClellan to run your off-season workouts. In this basketball-focused DVD, Coach McClellan and Mountain Pointe (AZ) advanced physical education instructor Jeff Decker outline a comprehensive workout program that helps to improve athleticism and reduce injuries.
Warmup
Coach McClellan takes you through a neurological warmup that features work on the agility ladder, dot jump, jump rope, and line hop exercises. These help to develop quickness, footwork, and coordination. The drills also help stimulate key muscles and joints needed for high-level strength and conditioning training.
Mobilities
After the warmup, athletes perform a number of mobility stretches to loosen the muscles and joints. Each of the movements shown focus on the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and hip flexors.
Injury Prevention Exercises
The third phase of the workout deals with exercises that help to prevent injuries both for the upper and lower body. You will see basketball-specific exercises that develop balance, strength, and mobility. These allow players to stay in games during a long, grueling season.
Plyometrics
Plyometrics are explosive jumping drills. Coach McClellan uses basketball-specific plyometrics to train explosiveness. He starts with low-level exercises and builds up to advanced drills to develop that explosiveness.
Power Development
Players have to have strength and power. Coach McClellan takes you through a demonstration of weight-bearing exercises. These combine several elements of explosion, balance, strength, and power.
Strength Movement Drills
The body has to be programmed to move quickly and in different directions. Coach McClellan demonstrates drills that focus on basketball movement. Control, balance, symmetry, and power are emphasized in this segment to develop strength in the upper body, lower body, and core.
Agility Drills
All the movements taught help to develop proper footwork. This is important because it allows athletes to change direction while moving at high speeds.
If you want to be a championship-caliber basketball player, you have to build the foundation. That starts with a comprehensive strength and conditioning program. Coach McClellan and Coach Decker give you the blueprint to do just that with this presentation. Rent this off season strength training DVD today.
Dave Leitao
(Rental)-Offensive Sets For The 4--out 1--in Motion Offense
$15.99
You can take advantage of quick passes or cuts
Give your perimeter players more scoring opportunities
You can defeat zone and man-to-man defenses with success
Keep things simple and let your players use Dave LeitaoÕs 4-Out-1 In Offense. Leitao's offense works well for smaller teams who want to attack the basket with positioning, movement, quick passes and cuts.
As an assistant head coach at Connecticut, Jim Calhoun, Leitao helped lead the Huskies towards the 1999 national championship. He built this offense on a pass-and-cut foundation. This offense uses basket cuts, pick-and-rolls, loops and fades. They are executed according to the ball movement and how the opponent defends.
There are three ways to attack the defense with the dribble. Loop, crack back, and fade. All of these options help build a foundation for ball movement and player movement.
Your players will be able to turn mismatches into opportunities, with the ultimate goal being able to get more than one defender to protect the ball. Leitao also shows how to play a 2-man game, and posts up opportunities to allow your team to pass the ball to their best scorers.
This simple but effective offense can win against both man-to-man and zone defense. This eliminates the need for players to think and allows them to respond to defense.

Barry Hinson
(Rental)-Offensive Relocation - 'middle To Explore, Baseline To Score!'
$15.99
Today's man-to-man defense systems can anticipate and eliminate many offensive options thanks to preparation and scouting. If your offense fails, Coach Hinson can help you rebuild and keep your effectiveness. Relocation is about getting the ball in. Hinson uses terms like the box and line of deployment to coach the post. The elbow drifts to the elbow after a baseline drive. Elbow penetration is the opposite movement. Hinson divides up the floor into four quadrants, and assigns each player a role within each quadrant. Players are also given rules to follow when they penetrate. This clinic presentation shows the entire offense using five players. This offense provides the post with two options and a 45-degree angle option when the ball enters the posts. This allows the whole team to stay on the same page with regards to offense at all times. This offense has flexibility. It can be run in a 4-out or 1-in alignment, as well as 3 out, 2 out, and for all baseline plays out of bounds.
