NABC On the Court Open Practice with Kelvin Sampson: Transition Offense & Defense + Opponent Prep

Kelvin Sampson has grown the Houston basketball program into a national power once again. He has experience coaching at all levels of the game, including the NBA, and uses that knowledge in this unique video. You will get to see how Sampson prepares his team for an upcoming game.

Kelvin Sampson Warmup & Transition Drills

The two-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2018, 2019) gets his practice started with stationary ball-handling drills that prepare the hands and feet for practice. Next, it’s full-court layups and fast break jump shots. Moving quickly from one drill to the next keeps the intensity and energy up.

Transition defense is a focus early in practice. A three-man weave drill transitions into a 2-on-1 with a trailer. Next is a 5-on-5 drill that continues the focus on transition defense. Every trip up the floor starts with an offensive set against a half-court defense. Make or miss, the defense converts to offense and they work on transition.

The final segment in what you will see is the first half puts players through a drill called Game Shots. Wing players and front-court players work on threes and post moves.

Halftime

The practice is divided into two halves and the team actually goes into the locker room to simulate a real halftime. Sampson offers teaching points and what the expectations are as the team goes out for the second half of practice.

Second Half of Practice

The second half starts with a three-man weave drill in which players are required to record a set number of makes in one minute. This sets the intensity for the second half.

Next is 5-on-5 prep for their opponent. Sampson discusses defensive matchups for their next game. The team also works on running through different offensive sets and transitioning to defense.

This video is an outstanding way to see how a Division I program prepares for an opponent. There are plenty of valuable coaching nuggets and ideas in Coach Sampson’s presentation.
