How to Beat Zone Defense in Basketball with Bill Self
Bill Self (Rental)-Bill Self Open Practice: Zone Offense $19.99
How to Beat Zone Defense in Basketball with Bill Self Learn how to beat the 2-3, 3-2, and 1-3-1 zones as well as zone presses in this video from one of college basketball’s great coaches, Bill Self of Kansas. Self has over 650 wins and has won 14 straight Big 12 regular season championships at Kansas. His 2008 team won the national title and Self has already been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In this video, Self provides you with proven strategies to defeat zone defenses and zone presses. Coach Self shares two zone offenses that are designed to create scoring opportunities. He also provides several counters that can help make the offenses unstoppable. Self’s philosophy is to force defenses to play four defenders on three offensive players. This creates confusion and can result in open shots for the offense. How to Beat Zone Defense in Basketball with “Stationary” Zone Offense This zone offense is based on the idea of quick movement. Coach Self emphasizes movement to open up scoring opportunities in the post as well as utilizing the short corner to stretch the defense. Coach Self introduces the idea of “hot potato” to demonstrate how to move the ball quickly against a 2-3 zone. In “Stationary” Coach Self shows you how to find gaps within the zone so your players can score around the rim or take a quick 3-point shot. “Slash” Zone Offense “Slash” is Coach Self’s answer to odd front defenses like the 1-3-1 and 3-2. It is a more intricate offensive strategy that uses three cutters to fill four open spots along the perimeter. There are primary cutters and secondary cutters that both use the lane to create an element of surprise against the defense. You will see 5-on-5 demonstrations to learn how to expose the weaknesses of all zone defenses. Press Break vs Zone Defense In the final segment of the how to beat zone defense in basketball video, Coach Self shows you how his teams break a zone press. It is simple enough that any team can use it against any form of zone press. The press break begins with dissecting the opponent’s pressure by taking advantage of the middle of the floor. Doing so successfully can lead to layup after layup in the open court. This 94-minute DVD is a great addition to any collection especially those looking for a zone offense that takes advantage of an opponent’s weaknesses. It has helped him earn inductions into the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as well as the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. In this video, Coach Kuhn shows you how to build the Blocker-Mover offense with a number of different drills. He presents 14 foundational drills, both core drills and shooting drills, to help you execute the Blocker-Mover system at a high level. Core Drills In order to learn the reads and options involved in the seemingly endless number of actions within the offense, players must work through Coach Kuhn’s series of foundational drills. Only when players have mastered the reads and options available are they able to freelance within the system. Coach Kuhn presents nine practice drills that help players learn the various reads needed to successfully run the blocker-mover offense. The Get Open drill is one where players run through a variety of actions that can be rehearsed. This helps develop the instincts players need to find scoring chances. Players learn to get open on the wing using pin down screens. They also learn how to play off flare screens, side ball screens, and baseline screens based on how a defense plays them. The Free Lance drill helps to really lock in the concepts of the offense. Using restrictions or scripted defensive tactics, you can tweak the drill to focus on whatever priority you would want to emphasize. Shooting Drills Coach Kuhn shows you five drills to break down the shooting options within the blocker-mover offense. Players train to take the same shots they will take on game night. The 3-Spot Shooting drill simulates different shots that can be created off of pin down screens or flare screens for the movers. Blocker Shooting helps condition post players to look for scoring opportunities through post ups and flashes to the ball. The Combo Shooting drill puts blockers and movers together to rehearse shots off flare screens. Any coach interested in running the blocker-mover offense must have this 54-minute video from Coach Kuhn. It’s a must for building an effective blocker-mover offense.
Blocker Mover Offense: Out of Bounds Plays, Set Plays, Reads, & Zone Defense by Joe Kuhn Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Joe Kuhn (Rental)-Blocker Mover Offense: Out of Bounds Plays, Set Plays, Reads, & Zone Defense $18.99
Blocker-Mover Offense: Out of Bounds Plays, Set Plays, Reads and vs. Zone Offense Hall of Fame coach Joe Kuhn presents to you an offense that can be adapted to fit any style, any personnel, and it works against both zone and man-to-man. The Joliet Junior College head coach, who is a member of both the Illinois and NJCAA Basketball Coaches Halls of Fame, shows you a highly adaptable offensive attack in this video through the use of the whiteboard, on-court demonstration, and game film. The simultaneous screening actions that incorporate every player on the floor are what make the blocker-mover offense team basketball at its best. You will see how it works against any defense and how players can have the freedom to freelance. Offensive Entries For teams that face pressure defenses frequently, Coach Kuhn shows you three different entries into the offense. Keep opponents guessing with three options to get open on the wing using pin screens. Detroit adds another screener to help out when extreme pressure gives you trouble. When dribble entry is needed, Coach Kuhn shows you how to space the floor to initiate the offense. Alignment Options The Blocker-Mover system features two designated blockers that look to constantly screen for movers in designated areas. Adjusting the assignments of the blockers changes the spacing and screening options that are created in the offense. Lane-Lane: great option for teams with two post players or when coaches need to find productive use for non-scorers Lane-Wide: used when at least one blocker has solid perimeter skills Wide-Wide: used when blockers have solid perimeter skills Top-Bottom: a four-guard lineup with one post player close to the rim Zone Offense Coach Kuhn illustrates how the Top-Bottom alignment can create a motion offense that works perfectly against zone defenses. In addition to the basic Blocker-Mover offense, you will see two additional concepts used to beat zone defenses. The Step Out-Step In action creates a ball reversal that pulls out defenders and frees up a post feed in the short corner. Transition & Set Plays Coach Kuhn shows you how simple transition offense can flow right into the screening actions of the blocker-mover. Scoring opportunities are available early in transition with drive and kick plays by your movers, feeding the post, or the use of wide pin down screens by the trailing blocker. To complement the offense, Coach Kuhn shows you five set plays that incorporate concepts from the main offense. Panther is one that can create a 3-point shot or a post opportunity. There are also ways to incorporate handoffs into the set plays creating even more action. Vermont is a sideline inbounds play that will either execute a lob pass or get the ball to your best player. With all of its options, Coach Kuhn’s offense is perfect for any team. In 88 minutes, he shows you an offense built for any situation – out of bounds, versus zone, versus man, and more – and how it can adapt to any roster. Own it today!

1-2-1-1 Press and Press Attack Former University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan was well-known for having teams that could apply pressure on defense and that could break pressure on offense. Ryan, a member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame, led his 2014 and 2015 teams to back-to-back trips to the Final Four. In this video, Coach Ryan breaks down his full-court diamond press and how to beat pressure with strategies that will get the ball safely into your half-court offense. Press Defense Coach Ryan offers several reasons why teams would want to play an aggressive style of full-court pressure defense. The diamond press is Ryan’s signature and an easy way to get quick turnovers early in a possession. Ryan goes through how to position players on your team so they are playing a spot in the press that suits their strengths. You will see the various trap opportunities available depending upon where the ball is inbounded. Ryan shows you how to adjust the press based upon the scouting of an opponent as well as how to increase the aggressiveness of the defense by chasing opponents into second traps in the same possession. Beating Pressure Defense Coach Ryan is a master at protecting the basketball especially when his teams are under pressure. Learn how he beats pressure by teaching the inbounder’s thought process. You will see how to look up the floor to throw the deep pass and beat the defense quickly. If you have an exceptionally tall player, Ryan shows you how to take advantage of that size. Bo Ryan’s Defensive System for Success Hall of Fame coach Bo Ryan shares his secrets for a defense that is synonymous with his name. The former Wisconsin head coach won seven Big Ten titles (three conference tournament and four regular season) in his career and took the Badgers to back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2014 and ’15. Coach Ryan shares a number of drills and strategies and also discusses his suffocating Diamond press. Defensive Drills Coach Ryan shares 12 practice drills that give your players the tools they need to become better individual defenders. The drills help establish the foundation for your team defense. Coach Ryan begins with a progression of drills that train on-ball defense. It begins with the stance, lateral movement, reaction time, and more. You will see the Two Deads and a Charge Drill which teaches players how to direct a dribbler up the floor, how to apply pressure in a dead ball situation, and how to take a charge. Other drills work on such defensive basics as close outs, denial defense, and beating screens. Ryan demonstrates three competitive drills that teach players to protect the rim with great help defense and communication. The 4-o-4 Post Drill adds a player at the high post. Defenders must react to contain the drive. Post Defense One of Bo Ryan’s Defensive System principles is to never allow a talented big man touch the ball in the post. You will see how Ryan coaches post denial without getting exposed to seals. Players learn to fight for position to front the post and keep the offense guessing with a strategy that denies the pass into the high post. Rebounding Another of Ryan’s key principles is defensive rebounding. Nothing frustrates great defenses like giving up offensive rebounds. Coach Ryan shares some insight on individual rebounding success. He also offers an awesome drill that will help your players improve their rebounding abilities. Defensive Tactics Opponents will try all sorts of screening actions against a man-to-man defense. Coach Ryan discusses how his teams deal with seven types of screens. Bo Ryan: Transition Defense by Bo Ryan Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Bo Ryan (Rental)-Bo Ryan: Transition Defense $18.99
Transition Defense with Bo Ryan Throughout his Hall of Fame coaching career, Bo Ryan put consistently tough defensive teams on the floor. Ryan won four NCAA Division III championships at UW-Platteville and took Wisconsin to back-to-back Final Fours (2014 & ’15). His teams were always very good on the defensive end and it all started with eliminating easy baskets in transition. In this tranistion defense video, Ryan shares his insights into creating solid transition defense. You will see seven practice drills that emphasize communication and playing defense in transition at a disadvantage. The whole idea, of course, is to minimize the number of fast break opportunities for the offense. Transition Defense Starts on the Offensive End Eliminating transition points starts with taking care of the ball on offense. Eliminating turnovers is critical to preventing fast break opportunities. Coach Ryan demonstrates a Partner Passing drill to reinforce the concept of communicating through body language. Players should be able to read each other and understand hand targets and positioning. This way, players know where and when to make a pass. Coach Ryan shows you six variations of the Partner Passing Drill covering all sorts of situations. Practice Drills for Transition Defense Seven easy drills break down Ryan’s system for transition defense. It all starts with committing to hustling back on defense all the time. The Pursuit Drill reinforces this concept. The drill teaches players to never give up on a breakaway layup and it teaches how the first players down the floor must protect the rim. Coach Ryan defines the responsibilities and techniques for the first player back, the second player back, and the trailers. He shows players how to act as a goalie at the rim and how to take away outside shots without giving up rim protection. A series of four weave drills is used to practice how to stop 3-on-2 and 2-on-1 advantage situations. Coach Ryan breaks down each player’s responsibilities in a disadvantage situation. The 6-Man Drill is a great way to simulate how to defend the 3-on-2. Search & Destroy is another great drill that challenges the defense with an extra offensive player to cover. All of Coach Ryan’s drills show you how to slow down your opponents so that your trailing defenders can get back and recover to full strength. Each drill is explained and Coach Ryan also adds the “why” and the “how” for these drills as well as his beliefs on stopping opponents in transition. Bob Huggins: Full & Half Court Pressure Defense by Bob Huggins Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Bob Huggins (Rental)-Bob Huggins: Full & Half Court Pressure Defense $18.99
Bob Huggins: Full & Half-Court Pressure Defense West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins is the master of pressure defense and shares with you system in this video. Huggins has over 850 career wins and has taken his teams (Akron, Cincinnati, and West Virginia) to 24 NCAA tournament berths. He has done it largely because of his relentless full-court pressure defense. In this video, Huggins gets into the details of his defense, how it developed, keys he uses with his players, and drills that he uses on a daily basis. Press Philosophy For Huggins, pressure defense is all about effort and activity. You will hear Huggins talk about how to encourage players to play with maximum effort. Coach Huggins will show you how the principles of half-court defense are extended into the full court. One of the most basic principles in Huggins’ system is forcing a ball handler to go to his weak hand. Another is making big post players dribble. Huggins likes to expose weak ball handlers. His defense does not give up any space and pressures opponents for all 40 minutes of the game. Players must pressure the ball at all times, deny inbound passes, and look for trapping opportunities. After a made basket, Huggins’ players immediately find their man and deny them the ball. Disrupt Spacing Offenses are based upon spacing which can help provide direct passes that lead to good shots. Coach Huggins’ defense forces teams to pass over, under, or around, but never through. Forcing passes that are not direct translates into poorer shots for offenses. Huggins believes in fronting the post to force lobs which take time and allows for the defense to rotate and get into position to defend it. Trapping Huggins makes all of his players constantly look for traps. Defenders force the ball to lines and give help defense in line. This leads to trap situations and also prevents direct drives to the basket. Players are taught to never play with their hands down. When they do, they are easier to screen. 4-on-4 + 1 Drill When you press and trap, you are going to have to play at a disadvantage at times. To prepare for those situations, Huggins uses this drill which he demonstrates for you. In 4-on-4 + 1, the defense plays at a disadvantage. The defense must rotate properly and pressure the ball to take away direct passes. Those playing help defense are on the help line and defenders one pass away are in the passing lane. Q&A Session Huggins finishes the session with a question and answer session. He is asked about pressing on a miss, trapping on a ball screen, and much more. If you are looking for a defensive system that can really frustrate opponents, Coach Huggins’ DVD is for you.

In this video, Coach Hurley shares with you his all-time favorite drills. In addition, he also talks about how he likes to organize practices. A member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Hurley opens his presentation sharing some advice on coaching. Coaches should never be finished learning and should work to improve their craft. Hurley talks about practice planning, drill work, and more. Pre-Practice and Warm-Up Drills Coach Hurley’s favorite warm-up drills worked on the three foundational skills of basketball: dribbling, passing, and shooting. He shows you the Fire Passing Drill which forces players to concentrate and communicate. The Michigan State series gets players moving and finishing around the basket. Drills like Up Two, Back Two, and the Chill Drill teach players how to attack a trap and also work on change of direction moves. All of Hurley’s warm-up drills challenge players both mentally and physically. Rebounding and Closeout Drills You can’t play offense if you can’t rebound! Coach Hurley trains players to be instinctive around the basket. The Oregon Rebounding Drills helps create toughness and forces players to compete for rebounds. One of the more challenging fundamentals of defense is the closeout. Coach Hurley shares a number of drills that help to teach the technique as well as incorporate things like ball screen defense in the 4-Line Passing Drill. The 3-on-3 and 4-on-3 Closeout Drills work on defensive efficiency especially in disadvantage situations. Conversion Drill One of the reasons why Coach Hurley’s St. Anthony’s HS teams were so hard to score against in transition was the 5-on-5 Conversion Drill. Your team will learn how to communicate and stop the ball in transition. Shooting Drills & Half-Court 3-on-3 To learn how to play off of each other, Hurley uses the 3-on-3 Half-Court Drill. Players incorporate all they have learned in half-court offense and defense. Coach Hurley then shifts to shooting drills. He shares some of his favorites including those that work on shooting off the catch and shooting off the dribble. One particularly favorite drill is 30 Plus a Half. It’s a great shooting drill to close a practice. Players love it and it works on improving all aspects of shooting. There are only three high school coaches in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Hurley is one. His “old school” values still hold true in the modern game and you get to learn from one of the true masters in this video.
Bob Hurley's Drills for Defensive Mastery by Bob Hurley Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Bob Hurley (Rental)-Bob Hurley's Drills for Defensive Mastery $18.99
Bob Hurley’s Drills for Defensive Mastery For 45 years, Bob Hurley Sr. was the head basketball coach at St. Anthony’s High School in New Jersey where he captured 28 state championships, won four national championships, and produced hundreds of quality players that went on to play at the college level. Hurley is well known throughout the coaching ranks as one of the most knowledgeable in the business. In this video, you will be presented with a plethora of knowledge from one of the best coaches in the world. Philosophy For Hurley, all players must follow a pattern of daily habits that help mold not only successful players, but successful people. Hurley has taught and modeled these habits throughout his four decades-plus as a coach and his teams have been remarkably consistent as a result. In addition, Hurley sets the expectation that practice will always be harder than games. Hurley establishes this at the beginning of every season and it helps players strive to work on their weaknesses to improve the team. Drills Each year begins with Hurley teaching the basics of defense. It all starts with the stance and progresses to footwork. Hurley emphasizes desire and hustling after loose balls.
