NABC On the Court Open Practice with Frank Martin: High-Intensity Defensive Focus & Man to Man Offense
University of South Carolina men’s basketball teams are known for their pressure defense. That is because head coach Frank Martin puts a premium on it. Martin was the 2017 Jim Phelan Coach of the Year after taking his Gamecocks to the 2017 Final Four. In this live-practice video, he shows you how he builds his pressure defense using breakdown drills and game-like situations.
Group Work
Players are divided into guards and bigs to work on 1-on-1 drills. The level of competition is evident right from the start. Coaches will learn a lot just from listening to Coach Martin correct his players as they go through the drills.
Coaches will also benefit from seeing how a well-organized practice is designed. Martin uses a number of drills that work on both offense and defense at the same time. The result is game-like atmosphere and a time-efficient practice.
Sets and Defensive Work
Coach Martin then goes through a number of offensive sets both in transition and in the half-court. Martin and his staff continually emphasize building good habits and working while tired. Coaches will see how Martin teaches both offense and defense within the same drills.
Man-to-man, zone, and press defenses are all covered. There are 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 drills where Coach Martin works on both offense and defense. Coaches can take away a lot from watching Martin correct his players as well as watching him give positive feedback that helps his players develop.
This is a great opportunity to watch one of the nation’s top coaches in action. Coach Martin progresses through a large number of game situations on both the offensive and defensive ends. The takeaways from this video are tremendous and any coach will improve his own game after watching.
