Tennessee is one of most recognizable brands in women college basketball and it is led by a highly successful coach in Holly Warlick, played for the late Pat Summitt. Basketball Practice 1 - Tennesse Women
Tennessee is known for having high standards and defensive intensity. This first practice shows how they develop those two traits. This practice is early in the season and Coach Warlick is laying the foundation for how the team is going to play through both discussions with the players and on-court work.
Much of the court time is dedicated to half court defense. You will see one of Tennessee's fundamental defensive drills in the Circle Closeout drill. The drill is a 3-on-3 highly competitive drill that focus on closeouts and help side D. The staff shows how you can score the drill to make it even more intense.
Warlick spends a large chunk of time focusing on defending the post. She teaches how guards can help the post players by "digging" from the wing along with the post players fundamentals guarding the ball in the post.
The Lady Vols work on both their conditioning and full-court pressure with 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 breakdown drills. These drills are the foundation of their "Fire" press option which they use after they score an easy transition bucket.
Basketball Practice 2 - Tennesse Women
The second practice is mostly focused on offense. They used a series of breakdown drills and controlled scrimmages to teach players what is expected of them. They also show two types of layup drills that can used as a warm up and work on finishing in traffic and with contact.
Coach Warlick keeps the theme of toughness and intensity even on the offensive side of the ball. She shows the teams War Drill, an offensive rebounding and transition drill, which will add energy and intensity to any practice. They also teach the fundamentals of offensive rebounding by showing players how to get around the defender and finish.
The Lady Vols spend a large chunk of time working their half court offense against man-to-man and zone defenses. They specially work on their "Drag" set along with how to attack traditional and trapping zones.
The team works on some more conditioning with a more free flowing 5-on-5 scrimmage. During this time Coach Warlick likes to emphasize full-court pressure and scoring in transition.
