Post Player Drills for Advanced Skill Development
Teach your players how to dominate the post in this video from one of the great post players in NCAA history, Danny Manning. Now the head coach at Wake Forest, Manning shares a series of advanced drills designed to develop a post player’s all-around skills.
Manning won a national championship while a player at Kansas in 1988. He also served as an assistant under Bill Self at Kansas before moving on to Tulsa where he won the 2014 Conference USA title and was named the conference coach of the year.
Fundamental Post Player Drills
In the video, Coach Manning begins with a breakdown of a fundamental but almost indefensible move – the jump hook. Manning takes you through five phases and shows you how to use the move to create easy scoring opportunities.
Footwork is a key to becoming a great post player. From working the half-court to full-court sprint and seal, players learn the proper footwork needed to create scoring opportunities. Coach Manning uses 1-on-1 and 1-on-2 drills to teach post players how to read a defense and score in any situation. He adds a cardio element to the drill as well as a run-and-seal action to initiate it.
Moves On The Block
Players then move to the block where they learn how to master the shot fake. Manning emphasizes the shot fake with every move to take advantage of defenders and to draw the old-fashioned three-point play. You’ll see the Double Chop Drill where players learn to create separation by attacking the hip of their defender.
Moves off the Block
Continuing in the video, Coach Manning takes players off the block to work on jab steps, cradle dribbles, cheat steps, and crossovers. You will learn nine post moves players can master off the block. Players learn the footwork first and do it slowly so they do not develop bad habits.
Coach Manning includes seven different hand-eye coordination drills to help develop your players’ hands. He uses a variety of equipment like tennis balls and medicine balls to put players through a dynamic workout.
As Kansas’s all-time leading scorer, Coach Manning was able to score at will around the rim. In this video, he takes his knowledge and experience as an elite post player and teaches it to you. This is a must-have piece of any coach’s collection. Rent this Post Player Drills DVD today.
