Open Practice: Man, Zone & Transition Offensive Drills
Nothing is left out of this video full of offensive concepts and breakdown drills from Kansas State head basketball coach Bruce Weber. The 2013 Big 12 Coach of the Year and his Wildcats won the 2018-19 conference regular season title and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in Weber’s seven seasons as head coach.
You will see a complete practice in this video that includes half-court offense, skill development, zone, offense, transition offense, and much more. Coach Weber also shares a number of transition drills that are also great for getting our players into shape for the season.
Transition Drills
In this segment, Coach Weber offers eight ideas for getting players in shape while working on the transition offense. Players work on pushing the ball up the floor and getting into the primary fast break. If the offense does not score off the break, they get into their ball screen offense immediately attempting to score before the defense has a chance to set up.
Coach Weber shows you a number of drills to help with the transition offense. There are 1-on-1 attacks from a quick pass up the court to attacking ball screens in the 5-on-5 offense. Coach Weber offers some unique twists by showing you how to simulate advantage and disadvantage situations in transition. All of Weber’s drills will help create the mindset your team needs to spread the floor and play fast.
Zone Offense
You will Coach Weber’s zone offense in action in both 4-on-4 and 5-on-5 scrimmage situations. The idea is to help players understand how they can attack space in the zone defense. Perimeter players are on the move constantly and overload situations help get posts some good looks on the inside. Players are also shown how to surprise the defense with weak side flashes to the high post.
5-on-5 Scrimmage
See Coach Weber’s offense in action in a 5-on-5 scrimmage. A portion of the practice time is devoted to this so that you can see how the ball screen offense operates. You will see exactly how Weber teaches the offense. Coaches let the players play for a while allowing to make mistakes which are corrected later.
This 170-minute video is full of knowledge for installing offensive concepts in a short amount of time. You will see everything from zone offense to inbounds plays and transition offense. There is surely something you can take away to help prepare your team for next season.
