How to High Jump Higher: Master the Fosbury Flop
The high jump looks like magic, but it is really just speed, timing, and an arched back working together. The Fosbury flop, where you clear the bar going backward, is the technique nearly every elite jumper uses because it lets your center of mass pass under the bar while your body goes over it. Get the approach, the plant, and the arch right, and you will clear heights that felt impossible a season ago.
How does the Fosbury flop work?
The flop wins because of physics. When you arch over the bar, your hips rise while your head and legs stay low, so your center of mass can actually travel below the bar even as your body clears it. That is free height you do not get from older styles like the scissors or the straddle. Your job is to build speed on the runway, convert that speed into a powerful upward plant, and then let a relaxed arch carry you over.
Almost every jumper uses a curved approach, usually a J-shaped run of eight to ten strides. The curve leans your body away from the bar so that when you plant your outside foot, your momentum rotates you up and back into flop position. Speed alone does not clear the bar. It is the transfer of that horizontal speed into vertical lift at the plant that sends you up. Nail the curve and the plant, and the arch takes care of itself.
Rhythm is the hidden ingredient. Elite jumpers actually accelerate through the last three steps rather than gathering and slowing down, and they keep tall, springy posture so none of that speed leaks into the ground. Think of the plant foot as a pole vault pole for a split second, stiff and quick, catching your momentum and redirecting it straight up. If you drift into the bar or sink low on the plant, you bleed off the energy you spent the whole runway building. Stay tall, stay fast, and let the plant snap you upward.
What are the phases of a high jump?
Break the jump into pieces and it stops feeling overwhelming. Master one phase at a time and the full jump comes together.

Do not rush the arch. If you throw your body backward before the plant does its work, you lose your lift and clip the bar with your back.
What training builds a bigger vertical for high jump?
The plant is a single-leg explosion, and the more force you drive into the ground the higher you rise. Resisted jump training overloads your hips, glutes, and calves so your takeoff produces more lift. Train against tension a few times a week and your plant leg learns to fire harder, which is exactly what clears a higher bar. Because the high jump plant is a one-legged effort, single-leg strength and reactive spring matter more than raw size, and resisted jumps hammer both at once. Stack that band work on top of your technique reps and you give yourself the best chance to add real inches to your best mark.

Which foot should I plant with?
You plant with the foot farthest from the bar. If you approach from the left, you plant with your left foot and curve to the right, and the opposite if you come from the right.
How long should my approach be?
Most jumpers use eight to ten strides in a J shape. Keep it consistent so your plant lands in the same spot every attempt.
Do I need to be tall to high jump?
Height helps, but speed, spring, and technique matter more. Plenty of shorter jumpers out-jump taller athletes with a better approach and plant.
Why do I keep hitting the bar with my back?
You are usually arching too early or piking at the waist. Drive up first, then let the arch happen at the top of the jump.
How can I train my vertical in the off-season?
Resisted jumps, plyometrics, and single-leg strength work all raise your takeoff power. Two or three explosive sessions a week will carry straight over to a higher bar.
