Dave Rose: The BYU Transition Offense
As a player, Dave Rose played alongside the great Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon on Houston’s Phi Slamma Jamma teams of the 1980s. As a coach, Rose won four Mountain West Conference titles and three coach of the year awards while at BYU where he is second all-time in career wins. In this on-court demonstration video, Coach Rose shows you how he attacks opponents in transition. Rose’s teams were consistently among the national leaders in scoring while he was at BYU.
BYU Transition Offense Drills
Coach Rose starts practice with a basic three-man weave drill to get his players ready to go fast. They work quickly and practice getting shots off at a high rate of speed. Rose then progresses to a 3-on-2 to 2-on-1 drill. He then shows you his all-time favorite drill, which often uses up to 30 minutes of practice time. The Nugget Drill is a progression-style transition drill that creates a numbered break for the offense each time down the floor.
BYU “Basic” Transition Offense
Basic is the BYU transition offense. It provides a number of different options including open three-pointers, post ups, and cutters to the basket. The attack uses a 4-out, 1-in set and the goal is to get the ball into the post for a higher percentage shot. Coach Rose also reviews how the offense deals with pressure using dribble entries and pressure releases.
One of the great features of this presentation is the question-and-answer session. Coach Rose takes questions about his transition drills and transition offense. You’ll hear how he deals with teams that like to play zone defense and how to create space when the ball goes inside to the post.
Incorporating Coach Rose’s transition concepts into any program is surely to produce positive results. Rent the BYU Transition Offense DVD today.
