Team Drills for Basketball with Tara VanDerveer
Stanford head women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer is one of the most respected coaches in the profession and rightfully so. She has 1000-plus wins, two national titles, and seven National Coach of the Year awards to her credit. She has developed numerous players throughout her forty-year career and in this video she shares with you how she has done so.
Team Drills for Basketball Philosophy
Coach VanDerveer begins her presentation with a look at her philosophy behind developing successful basketball players. Hear some of the tips that have benefited VanDerveer throughout her illustrious career. Coach VanDerveer has a strong belief that players must be able to pass and catch without missing a beat.
The same holds for shooting which all starts with the layup. She teaches shooting based on the acronym BEEF, which stands for Balance, Eyes, Elbows, and Feet. In addition to passing, catching, and shooting; players must also be able to get in a stance and play defense. These are the fundamentals to any successful program.
Ball Handling & Dribbling
Any player, regardless of position, must be able to handle the ball to a certain degree. Coach VanDerveer shares some drills such as ball slaps, taps, and figure-8s that also serve as a good warm up. Players can then progress to moving with the ball. One of her favorite drills comes from Ganon Baker, a well-known skills development coach. Players make one-hand passes, make a move, and then pass back with one hand helping players develop balance with both the right and left hand.
Passing Series
Coach VanDerveer offers a series of drills to improve passing beginning with her USA Passing Drill where players catch on the move and finish at the rim. The 3-Ball Passing Drill teaches players to communicate by passing, catching, and calling out names on the move in the paint. The drills are then expanded to the full court where 3-Lane Passing is introduced.
Shooting Drills
Shooting drills begin with a variety of layups – overhand, underhand, and reverse. Players work on proper footwork and eventually add a defender to the drill to create game-like situations. The shots then move away from the rim and Coach VanDerveer helps players create angles to make bank shots and open jumpers. The Partner Transition Drill incorporates full-court passing and a finish with a layup or a jump shot in the paint.
Defensive Drills
Finally, players must be well-rounded and understand how to play defense. They work the Mirror Drill to learn how to defend 1-on-1. Offensive players work their 1-on-1 moves as defenders learn to defend. In Ricochet Rebounding, post players learn to “hit and get” and finish with an outlet pass.
This is an outstanding comprehensive video from one of the game’s best that will help you in your quest to develop successful basketball players and successful programs. Rent this team drills for basketball DVD today.

(Rental)-Spread Princeton Offense
$18.99
Tara VanDerveer, a highly accomplished coach with over 35 years of experience leading the Stanford basketball team, shares her knowledge and expertise on coaching basketball in this video presentation. She has a proven track record, having won three National Championships and coached USA Basketball to a Gold Medal, among many other accomplishments.
In the video, Coach VanDerveer explains how she has adapted her team's style of play by implementing a 4-out positionless system that incorporates their version of the Princeton Offense (Jersey). She demonstrates how to create multiple scoring options by using a 4-out basic alignment, in which four guards line the perimeter with 8-12 feet in spacing, allowing for easy cutting action and feeding the post. By using this system, guards can back cut, cut over the top, flatten out, or exchange places, keeping the defense on their toes.
She also uses a whiteboard session to diagram the actions and movements used to teach the Princeton Offense to her players. One of Stanford's favorite actions is their Blue Screen, in which the post player sets a ball screen on the best wing player and then follows up with a pin down screen on the wing after the ball is reversed. This action is tough to guard and creates a great scoring opportunity for the most athletic wing. They also run a simple Red Screen (wing pick & roll) that is created off of cutting action and the post player feeding the wing on a kick out.
Coach VanDerveer's drills are centered around layups and quality shots within the offense, with an emphasis on getting the best possible shot. Playing positionless basketball allows players to have fun playing in different spots.
In Pinch Post Shots, players feed the high post and work on their cutting action to simulate a screen, then come off of a screen for a shot. In Finishing Drill, athletes work on driving down the lane line and making various moves to get to the rim and finish through contact. In Buddy Layups, players work on swinging the ball around the perimeter and running actions they will use in their half-court offense, such as a backdoor cut for a layup and dribble hand-offs.
The video ends with VanDerveer taking the viewer through live game film, helping players understand how to run great movements and actions against any defense. This video is 97 minutes long and was released in 2021.

VanDerveer uses a number of different equipment devices to challenge players and she will teach you how you can combine elements like shooting, dribbling, and even defense into your everyday drills.
Basketball Team Drills to Start Practice
With the help of her lead assistant and on-court demonstrations, Coach VanDerveer shows you the Cone Drill which is a typical practice starter. All practices at Stanford begin with ball-handling drills and the Cone Drill allows players to work on a variety of attacking moves from a number of spots on the floor. Jab and Sweep is another drill where players learn to catch a perimeter pass and immediately attack an opponent.
VanDerveer incorporates several elements into the 7-5-3-1 and 5-4-3 drills. Players attack and get shots up then move into a 1-on-1 with a fresh defender. Using down screens and making a variety of reads are taught in these drills, which also serve as great conditioners.
In addition to perimeter drills, Coach VanDerveer also presents a few of her favorite post drills. One is the Mikan Circle, a drill that has five to six players working on hook shots close to the basket. Like many of her other drills, the Mikan Circle also serves as a conditioning drill. One of a post player’s most necessary skills is the ability to catch an entry pass. The Mirror Passing and Mikan Quick Catch drills work a post player’s ability to receive the basketball.
