Pat Skerry (Rental)-Four Phase Skill Development Practice $17.99
Basketball Skills Training - Four Phase Skill Development Practice Towson University head coach Pat Skerry offers an inside look into his program and how he develops players. He knows a thing or two about player development having orchestrated the biggest turnaround in NCAA history – from 1-31 to 18-13 – in 2012-13. In this video, Coach Skerry takes you inside a live development session where the focus is on skill work for both guards and posts. You will also see live 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 work that shows you a number of offensive sets used during that 18-win season. After a dynamic warm-up and stretching routine, Coach Skerry takes you right into the skill development session. He does a great job of teaching and explaining the beliefs of his program and the techniques they use. Drill Series One: Individual Basketball Skills Training Coach Skerry likes to start all practices with ball handling drills. The drills involve changing direction, finishing at the rim, and finishing with contact. The Nova Passing drill works on multiple skills like communication and using the 1-2-step as they catch the ball. Wings work on footwork while executing the L-cut, finishing off a single dribble, and passing accuracy. Posts learn the “pump and power’ approach to the jump stop. Drill Series Two: Transition Perimeter players are the focus in the Drag Ball Screen drill where they learn to utilize the screen in transition. Drive and kick aspects to attacking are also stressed here. Posts are the focus of the Pick and Roll drill. Players learn good spacing and how to throw crisp passes. Drill Series Three: Using Screens All players learn to use a variety of screens in the half-court. Posts are taught how to gain position on a block-to-block rip screen. They learn to absorb contact (with a pad) while finishing on the low block. Post players also work on several catch and shoot opportunities from the elbow and short corner. Wings learn the value of the reverse dribble in order to draw the hedge defender out and open up a driving lane for a drive and kick opportunity. Drill Series Four: Defense The final series works on defensive development. Players learn to close out, pressure the ball, form a wall at the rim, help defense, weak side spacing and defending the rip screen. Each of the drills focuses on being physical without fouling. The drills also serve as great conditioners. Learn to combine your skill work with your team concepts to make your practices more effective and more efficient. Narrowing the focus as Coach Skerry does in each drill set allows for more rapid player development. Rent this basketball skills training DVD today.
Pat Skerry (Rental)-Open Practice With Pat Skerry $17.99
Basketball Practice with Pat Skerry Develop offensive skills and learn how to use competition in practice to keep your players focused and engaged in this video from Towson University head coach Pat Skerry. Coach Skerry took over the Towson program in 2012 and engineered the biggest single-season turnaround in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history. In this basketball practice video, Coach Skerry shows you how he completed the turnaround. This all-access look at a Towson practice allows you to see how Coach Skerry teaches the fundamental skills and the drill he uses to do so. You also see many of his offensive and defensive sets. The basketball practice begins with fundamental skill development and position-specific drills. Players work on ball handling and passing early in practice giving players a chance to work on those skills while getting loose. From there, players split by position. Post players work on sweeps that lead to attacking the rim. They also work on catching the ball as they trail and finishing. Basketball Practice Drills for Guards Guards work on penetrating the lane, making accurate passes, and pivoting. Guards also work on attacking the hedge off the ball screen. This is an extremely important skill especially in a ball screen offense. The next phase of practice finds players working on defensive breakdown drills The Wall Drill teaches big men to play solid post defense without committing fouls. Guards run a 2-on-2 drill with an emphasis on dealing with cross and down screens and working the gaps in the defense. Next, Coach Skerry runs his players through the multiple offensive sets. You get a great look at Skerry’s Shuffle Offense which features back screens and ball screens. These different actions prevent defenses from anticipating and disrupting the offense. The Option Offense teaches players to curl off of screens to get open shots. Each of these offensive sets can generate open looks for your best players. Transition Drills Coach Skerry then runs his team through a segment in transition. The Scrabble Drill has one team of three on defense going up against four players on offense. Players must play good position defense and scramble to the ball. When the possession changes, the defense transitions to offense and gains two players. These overloaded drills emphasize defensive help concepts. The Cycle Drill is also introduced here. The offense runs through a set zone offense in a 5-on-0 situation then transitions to two possessions against a live defense. The practice ends with the 6 Possessions and 6 Points competition. The offense gets six possessions to score six points. The drill emphasizes being efficient on each possession and adds an element of competition. Coach Skerry gives you a number of very useful drills in this 100-minute video. Rent this basketball practice DVD today.
