How do you pick a rim that fits?
Five checks, in the order a facility manager runs them. Get these right and the new rim goes up in one trip.
1Check the bolt pattern. Most backboards drill the rim mount in a 5 in. x 5 in. or 4 in. x 5 in. pattern. Most of our front-mount rims use a universal plate that fits both, plus most 42 in. and 48 in. rectangular boards and most fan-shaped boards. Two exceptions worth knowing: the Multi-Directional plate is about 5 in. x 7 in., and the rear-mount high strength rim uses an 8-hole back plate. Measure the old rim center to center before you order.
2Front-mount or rear-mount? A front-mount rim bolts through the face of the backboard, and that covers most retrofits. A rear-mount rim carries its mounting plate behind the board. If that is how your old rim was installed, stay with a rear-mount like the Scholastic Rear-Mount Breakaway.
3Breakaway, fixed or double ring? A breakaway rim flexes down under a dunk or a hang and springs back level. The factory settings listed on our pages: 140 lbs on the Collegiate, 160 lbs on the Master Professional, 180 lbs on the Breakaway Goal, 180 to 200 lbs on the Multi-Directional, and 180 to 230 lbs, field adjustable, on the Competitor and Contender goals. A fixed rim never moves, which suits playgrounds and PE. A double ring adds a second steel ring for outdoor abuse.
4Indoor competition or outdoor? For school and league games, pick a competition breakaway that is listed as meeting NCAA and NFHS requirements (the Contender Series also lists FIBA). For outdoor courts, look at double ring and fixed playground rims, or a breakaway marked indoor/outdoor.
5Match the net attachment. Tube-tie (hideaway) rims lace the net through tubes under the ring, so there are no exposed hooks. No-tie rims use 12 loops or holders under the ring. Every official ring is 18 in. inside diameter, so any standard basketball net fits once the attachment style matches.

Will a new basketball rim fit my backboard?
Most backboards use a 5 in. x 5 in. or 4 in. x 5 in. goal-mount hole pattern, and most front-mount rims on this page use a universal plate that fits both. Measure your old rim center to center, or send us a photo and we will confirm the fit before you order.
What is a breakaway basketball rim?
A breakaway rim is built to flex down when a player dunks or hangs on it and then spring back to level. Our rims list their release settings, from 140 lbs on the Collegiate to 180 to 230 lbs, field adjustable, on the Competitor and Contender goals.
Do I need a breakaway or a fixed rim?
Indoor school and league courts usually run a competition breakaway that is listed as meeting NCAA and NFHS requirements. Playgrounds, parks and PE spaces often choose a fixed or double ring rim because it never moves.
What is a double rim basketball hoop?
A double rim has two steel rings stacked together instead of one, which makes it tougher for outdoor play. The Double Rim Goal uses two 5/8 in. steel rods, and the Double Ring Breakaway pairs a double ring with a breakaway mechanism.
What size is a regulation basketball rim?
An official rim is 18 in. inside diameter, made from 5/8 in. steel rod on most institutional models, and mounted so the inside of the ring sits 6 in. from the face of the backboard.
What is the difference between tube-tie and no-tie net attachment?
Tube-tie (hideaway) rims lace the net through tubes under the ring, so there are no exposed hooks. No-tie rims hook the net over 12 loops or holders. Both take a standard net, so match the net style to the rim.
Do basketball rims come with a net?
