Get on Balance!Awesome Progression as thisHigh School Thrower learns how to get on balance!Getting on Balance is one of the toughest things to accomplish in the rotational throws. This is a great example of giving the student enough information and then letting him learn from the feed back his body gives him.Of course, you must know the position you are looking for, and this student does. His body tells him he is not on balance and eventually he corrects to find a balanced position.'Hitting the hands' is used as a "stopping point" for being on balance. You need to be on balance at 9 o'clock, or when this thrower is hitting his dad's hands.Hitting the hands keeps the thrower from turning past the balance point.1 Drill - Hit the Hands 1:23Mac Wilkinsis anAmerican Olympicathletewho was once the best discus and shot put thrower in the world. Mac Wilkins the Coach InEight Yearsfrom 2006 through 2013 Wilkins coached the throws at Concordia University, in Portland, OR.His throwers won 26 individual National Championships and earned 94 All-American honors. In August 2013, Wilkins left Concordia University to coach for the USATF at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista California. He has contributed as a part time coach or consultant to the following throwers: 2012-KrishnaPoonia, India#6London Olympics 2010-KrishnaPoonia, IndiaCommonwealth Champion, W-DT 2010- Jason YUSA #1 US M-DT, Olympian 2009- Dani S, Australia WorldChampion W-DT 2008- Stephanie TUSA OlympicChampion W-DT 2008 Annie Hess,Concordia U.LongestUS College W-DTatany level in 2008, (3years from45m, 147 to58.69m, 192') 2001-Adam SUSA #5 World Championships 2000- Adam SUSA #5 Sydney OlympicsM-DT*1996 - Adam S USA Finalist Atlanta Olympic Games*1988 '92 '96 Ramon Jimenez Gaona Paraguay Olympian &Pac-10 Champion*1976 '80 Lynne Winbigler Anderson USA Olympian & National Champion Mac Wilkins the Thrower Olympic Gold Medal 1976 Olympic Silver Medal 1984 Olympic 5th place 1988 Four Times World Record Holder Eight Times US National Champion in the Discus Ranked #1 in the World in 1976 and 1980 in the discus. Three Things I Know... About Rotational Shot & Discus
CoachTube Three Things I Know... About Rotational Shot & Discus $24.95
These three essentialelements of the throw can be taught the first day to beginners and must be mastered by professionals.Over the years I have always looked for the common denominator for the throws. What is true at all levels of throwing? What is easy to understand for beginners and what the best in the world must do to achieve their best. These three concepts can be the foundation of great technique with any personal style. They are the building blocks that need to be refined every year. They are also great high level concepts to focus on in the final phase of preparation for the "Big Meet" of the year.1 Getting Started 6:56 2 #1 See the Horizon 4:58 3 #2 Work a Wide Right Leg 9:04 4 #3 Continuous Right Leg Rotation 10:22Mac Wilkinsis anAmerican Olympicathletewho was once the best discus and shot put thrower in the world.Mac Wilkins the CoachIn Eight Years from 2006 through 2013 Wilkins coached the throws at Concordia University, in Portland, OR. Overall, he has helped produce 10 NCAA East Region qualifiers and six NCAA Championship participants. In Saatara[apos]s three seasons, Michigan[apos]s field event athletes recorded 20 marks which rank in the top 10 of U-M[apos]s all-time performance list in various events. Most notably, under Saatara[apos]s direction, five new school records were set during the 2013 season. Junior/sophomore Cody Riffle set new standards in the indoor (19.25 meters, 63-2) and outdoor (18.8 meters, 61-3.5) shot put. Senior/junior Ethan Dennis set a new weight throw record (21.20 meters, 69-6.75) and improved upon his own hammer throw record (64.98 meters, 213-2), which he set in 2012. At the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, Saatara helped decathlete Kurt Reichenbach finish third with a school-record setting total of 7,412 points, and become the first decathlete to advance to the NCAA Championships since 2010. During the 2013 indoor season, Dennis and Riffle each earned All-America second team accolades. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Riffle earned his second All-America second team citation, while Dennis and Reichenbach each secured honorable mention recognition. In 2012, Saatara helped guide Dennis to All-America second team honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw and All-Big Ten second team recognition in the hammer throw at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Dennis improved his hammer throw mark by more than 14 inches from his redshirt-freshman season, to earn the team[apos]s Most Improved Athlete award. During his first season in Ann Arbor (2011), Saatara molded several freshmen into impact performers in the field. Dennis (35-lb. weight throw) and Riffle (shot put) both etched their names into the U-M record books in their first competitive seasons as freshmen, as did high jumper Bradley James and Reichenbach. Riffle, James, and Dennis each qualified for the 2011 NCAA East Region Preliminary Rounds, along with pole vaulters Jack Greenlee and Austin DeWildt. A tenacious recruiter, Saatara also signed the nation[apos]s top prep hammer thrower in Brad Bolton (El Toro, Calif.) and two-time MHSAA state champion Derek Sievers (Byron Center, Mich.) during his first season. Saatara (pronounced sah-TAR-uh) spent the previous eight seasons at Northern Arizona University. During that span, he helped guide the Lumberjacks to 12 Big Sky Conference men[apos]s and women[apos]s team championships. He has coached more than 20 Big Sky individual champions and guided more than 30 student-athletes to the NCAA Regional Championships. In 2009, Saatara coached four Big Sky champions -- Shelby McCray (women[apos]s discus), Javier Villarreal (men[apos]s shot put), Curtis Durocher (men[apos]s hammer) and Andres Rossini (men[apos]s discus). In the summer of 2008, three of Saatara[apos]s athletes competed at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Amin Nikfar, a volunteer assistant at Northern Arizona who trained under Saatara for two years, set the Iranian national outdoor record and qualified for the shot put. Former student-athlete Georgina Toth qualified in the hammer throw, and Zara Northover (Jamaica) made it to Beijing to compete in the shot put. Some of his additional prominent athletes include Jeremy Hoff, a former walk-on who represented Northern Arizona at two consecutive NCAA Outdoor National Championships in 2003 and 2004; Karim Chester, an All-American in the weight throw; and Dana Posey, who currently holds the UNA school record for the hammer throw. At the NCAA Division II level, Saatara guided Nicole Duncan to national titles in the 100m, 200m and long jump. An avid clinician, he has coached at the Ironwood throws camp in Spokane, Wash., and in 2009, he was also invited to the USATF Podium clinic in Las Vegas. He has presented at the 2008 USATF Super Clinic, held in conjunction with the USATF Olympic Trials, the Arizona Track Coaches Association, and the National Throws Coaches Association. He also organized the NAU Track and Field Coaching Seminars. Saatara came to NAU after a stint at his alma mater, Cal State Los Angeles, where he served as the interim head coach for the program. He is a former All-American at CSULA, setting the Iranian national record in the weight throw in 1997 with a toss of 20.06 meters (65 feet, 9 inches). He finished second in the hammer throw at the 1995 Division II national championships. Saatara is a USA Track and Field Level II certified coach.

Discus Drills
CoachTube Discus Drills $14.95
The goal of any great throw is to bring as much speed and stretch reflex to the power position as possible. One must release the implement as close to the optimal speed of release, angle of release, and height of release. The drills in this course are in the order of the front of the circle to the back of the circle. I teach it this way because we are trying to bring the before-mentioned qualities to the power position and through the release at the front. When attempting to learn; practice first without an implement, then with a ball, and last with a disc. What we are trying to do is cultivate this relationship between your brain and your body to know what to do. One must do thousands of these reputations to master these drills. It starts slow and simple then advances to the whole movement. The drills can be done practically anywhere. It takes dedication and patience to attain the numbers of reps necessary to be proficient. At the end of this course, there are lessons of elite male and female throwers to observe and practice analyzing what they are doing similarly and what they are doing differently. Evaluating a throw when looking at the below positions of your athletes will help you quickly determine what needs work or what you have accomplished. Break contact with the left foot out of the back When they land with their right foot in the center When their left foot taps in the power position in front of the circle Where their body positions are at the end of the release The quest for technical proficiency and further throws begins on day 1 of your career and stops the day you retire.1 Introduction Free 2:31 2 Open and Closed Power Positions 2:50 3 Closed to open non reverse with pause WB 0:56 4 Rhythm Closed to open non reverse WB 0:42 5 Rhythm Closed to open with reverse WB 0:50 6 Repeat 180 turns with stick 1:02 7 3 turns and throw non reverse WB 1:06 8 3 turns to closed throw non reverse WB 0:46 9 3 Turns and throw reverse WB 1:16 10 Discus path with Power ball 1:05 11 Sweep leg drill FV 0:53 12 Sweep leg drill RV 0:38 13 Shin angle with sweep path 0:46 14 Shin angle with sweep path RV 0:39 15 Crack the whip 1:05 16 Crack the whip RV 1:10 17 Crack the whip to closed power 1:20 18 Line drill with power ball 1:03 19 South African non reverse WPB 0:57 20 South African with reverse WB Free 1:26 21 South African Focal Points with reverse WD 1:26 22 South African with reverse WD 1:03 23 Windup 2:26 24 Full throw non reverse WB 1:40 25 Full throw with reverse WD 1:23 26 Andy Bloom 1:19 27 Aretha Thurmond Free 1:22 28 Daniel Stahl 1:34 29 Gerd Kanter 1:38 30 John Powell 1:21 31 Mac Wilkins 2:36 32 Sandra Perkovic 1:18 33 Valarie Allman 2:36Scott Bennett has over 40 years of experience coaching everyone from high schoolers to Olympians.
