3 Point Shooting Drills with Jeff Young
As analytics have taken over the game of basketball, more teams have been relying on the 3-point shot at most every level. From the NBA to high school, the majority of the best teams are very efficient 3-point shooters. To have a chance at success, your teams must shoot well from beyond the 3-point line.
Jeff Young, head coach NCAA Division II power Walsh University, shares with you his methods for improving a team’s 3-point shooting. An excellent 3-point shooter as a player at Walsh in the 1990s, Young emphasizes shooting every day in his practices. The winningest coach in school history, who also has an NAIA national championship under his belt, shares a number of drills as well as his philosophy on changing a player’s shot.
Philosophy of 3 Point Shooting
Coach Young’s presentation begins with his philosophy on shooting the basketball. Many young coaches may have never really considered their philosophy on shooting or may have some preconceived notions of their own. Coach Young helps you to examine what you really believe about shooting mechanics from positioning of the feet to the follow-through. He will even show you how to help players improve their confidence as shooters.
3 Points of 3 Point Shooting Drills
In his program, Young talks about the three points of emphasis: 1) recruit great shooters, 2) shot selection, and 3) repetition. He explains how to control shot selection and even shooting off of a good pass as compared to a bad one. The key for Coach Young in improving 3-point shooting is the repetition. He sets aside at least 30 minutes of practice time each day to work on shooting, mostly catch-and-shoot situations.
3 Point Shooting Drills
Young breaks his shooting drills into individual and team drills. There is always an element of time and score in each. This brings out the competitive nature in players. A consequence added to each drill is another incentive for players to succeed. You will see five individual drills and four team drills.

It also has a competitive element.
Passing
Coach Drew uses two competitive passing drills to motivate players to focus both on offense and defense. Players learn to see the floor, be strong with the ball, utilize ball fakes, and fire off quick, crisp passes. Defenders work on ball pressure, forming traps, and anticipating the next pass.
Rebounding
Two rebounding drills are presented to develop the skills and mindset needed to be great on the boards.
Numbered Rebounding: challenges players to block out and secure consecutive rebounds
Circle the Wagons: involves the whole teach in a 5-on-5 competitive rebounding drill

Greg Kampe
(Rental)-Getting Inside Against a Zone Defense
$18.99
How to Score Against a Zone Defense by Getting the Ball Inside
Oakland University head coach Greg Kampe has been at the school for over 20 years and has led the program to over 600 career wins. He is a four-time Summit League Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. In this video, Kampe shares how his teams beat zone defenses. You will see how he gets his players to understand the why behind attacking zones as well as a few quick hitters he likes to use against zone defenses.
How to Score Against a Zone Defense with Quick Hitters
Kampe emphasizes using false motion in his quick hitters against a zone. False motion creates some deception and allows for the attacking of the middle of the zone. Continually attacking the middle wears your opponents down leading to easy layups and close-range shots.
Kampe uses high-ball screen sets to force defenses to act. The result is a 2-on-1 situation which allows the offense to control tempo and pace. Incorporating high-ball screens also creates lanes for your best passer to find open teammates.
Attacking a Matchup Zone
Teams that play the matchup zone well are tough to beat. Players have a hard time understanding matchup zone and how to beat it. Coach Kampe uses a double post set to create a mismatch for a slashing guard to score in the paint.
Dribble Drive vs. Zone
Coach Kampe likes the dribble handoff in order to create a false action and set up his team’s best penetrator for a ball screen to attack the basket. If the defense stops the dribble penetration, a team’s best shooter is left open for a 3-point attempt. Kampe likes to create these 2-on-1 opportunities to exploit zone defenses.
Favorite Drills
Kampe’s presentation closes with some of his favorite drills. The Closeout Drill teaches players to closeout with high hands using short choppy steps to complete the closeout. The ball is passed around the perimeter while players complete the closeouts.
Coach Kampe has been around the game for a long time and has built a solid program at Oakland. His teams are known for their dominating offenses and it is his false action sets that will be able to provide your team with the fuel it needs to score against your best opponents. Brad Underwood
(Rental)-Hard Nosed High Intensity Basketball Practice
$18.99
Intense Basketball Drills - Training for Toughness – Hard-Nosed, High-Intensity Practice
Illinois head coach Brad Underwood has built programs well-known for their toughness and grit. While at Stephen F. Austin and Oklahoma State, Underwood went to four straight NCAA tournaments and garnered a number of Coach of the Year awards. Using the spread motion offense and a high-pressure defense, Underwood-coached teams are tough to beat on any given night.
In this intense basketball drills video, you will get an inside look at a full practice at Illinois. Underwood explains how he and his staff install the motion offense as well as the transition defense.
Intense Basketball Drills for Defense
For Underwood, defense is all about hard work. He presents a number of drills to teach defensive fundamentals like up-the-line and on-the-line defense. Players work to influence the ball to the sideline in 3-Line Closeouts. Here, Underwood teaches players to use a big first step to defend an attacker instead of taking a small false step.
To teach Ball Screen Defense, Coach Underwood uses a continuous 2-on-2 drill to teach players to force everything to the left. Underwood’s teams use a hard hedge and ice the ball handler so they can attack dribblers. This forces teams to prepare for multiple types of ball screen defense.
Coach Underwood uses the Shell Drill to teach defensive rotation and help-side defense. Starting with 3-on-3, Underwood progresses to 5-on-5 where he teaches baseline rotation, ball screen rotation, and shrinking the court by forcing everything left.
To finish up the defensive portion of the video, Coach Underwood goes through his 1-2-2 full-court press. The idea is to force deflections and wear down an opponent’s offense. Underwood sets a goal of 35 deflections per game to force opponents into making bad passes.
Intense Basketball Drills for Offense
Coach Underwood then takes you through how he puts in the spread motion offense. Through a series of drills, you will see how players master attacking the rim off the ball screen or over-closeout. The Quick 3 Drill is used to stress putting pressure on opposing defenses. The focus is on getting defensive rebounds and then pushing the ball up the floor within seven seconds in an attempt to score.
The 2-Man Game drill puts guards and posts working together to get downhill off of a ball screen in the half-court. In 5-on-0, Coach Underwood teaches the flow of the offense and how to work ball reversals. This also puts pressure on opponents.
Coach Underwood’s philosophy is to also put pressure on the opponent and he does so by creating a culture of toughness. His teams put the program ahead of themselves and you will see that in this video. With well over two hours of content, you will get an inside look at Underwood’s offensive system as well as how they play tough, hard-nosed defense. Rent this Intense Basketball Drills DVD today.

Josh Gamblin: Half Court Sets for Must-Score Situations
Think of all the times your team needed points in a crucial situation. Down three in the final seconds. Down two with an opponent at the free throw line. Successful coaches are prepared for these situations, and many more. In this video, Mid-America Christian University head coach Josh Gamblin shares a piece of his playbook offering up 10-plus offensive sets to provide you with multiple scoring options in those clutch situations.
Gamblin was the Rawlings NAIA Division I Coach of the Year in 2016 after leading Mid-America Christian to the NAIA Division I national championship. Gamblin learned from one of the best when he served as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma under Lon Kruger. Now in his fourth season at MACU, Gamblin is nearing 100 career wins, which can be attributed to his motion offense.
In this 51-minute video, Gamblin goes through a number of ways he sets up and disguises plays that he likes to use in late-game situations when his team needs points. He shares several of those methods in this segment including options like dribble hand offs, weak side flare screens, elevator screens, double staggered screens, and pin downs. Each set play has a variety of options too and is designed to take advantage of your players’ skill sets.
4 C Series
Coach Gamblin presents his base 4-out series flowing from the primary break. He goes through the counters and other adjustments that can be made depending on what a defense does. Gamblin teaches multiple actions out of the 4-out including:
Get your best shooter open with a pick and pop with a strong 4 that can handle the ball or step outside and nail the 3-pointer.
Take advantage of a big wing that hit 3-pointers from anywhere.
Take advantage of an athletic 5 who has some shooting range and is able to score off the dribble after setting multiple screens.
5-Out Series
The wave of the future is the 5-Out series where players are positionless and can play anywhere on the floor. Using the 5-Out forces defenses to defend the entire floor giving your team the opportunity to:
Take advantage of your players’ individual abilities whether it be a post with long-range shooting ability or a big guard who can work in the post.
Use ball screens to post up your best player and create flare action for your best shooter.
Create mismatches off of a drive by your best ball handler or off a pin down for your best shooter.
With all of the counters and adjustments that Coach Gamblin provides, you will find any number of potential scoring plays that you can add to your offense. Coach Gamblin’s playbook rivals any big-time college program or even any NBA team’s best sets. With Gamblin’s help, you will leave opponents wondering what’s coming next!
John Brannen
(Rental)-Full Court & Half Court Match Up Press
$18.99
Match Up Press Defense : Full Court & Half-Court
Teach your players a defense that controls tempo, tires opponents, and disrupts rhythm. University of Cincinnati head coach John Brannen used his full-court pressure defense to take Northern Kentucky to the NCAA tournament in its first year of eligibility in 2017. NKU was the Horizon League champion that season and Brannen was the league’s Coach of the Year. The big reason for his success was his defense.
In this video, Brannen shows you three different variations of full-court pressure and how to develop a solid half-court defense. You will witness a series of drills that Brannen uses in order to do so. Your players will learn to develop an explosive first step and stay in front of ball handlers. You will also see how you can create more turnovers and chaos for your opponent.
Three Variations of Full-Court Pressure
Two of Brannen’s presses are based on match-up zone principles allowing for players to learn consistent responsibilities and the ability to adapt to opponent’s press breaks. Both presses also provide a unique twist to confuse opponents. The third press is based on man principles.
White Press: Force opponents to the “coffin corner” and create trapping opportunities
Blue Press: Force the ball out of a talented player’s hands
55 Tough Press: Uses man-to-man principles to increase pressure on denying the inbound pass. This is designed to get a 5-second call or a steal off the inbound pass.
Match Up Press Defense Breakdown Drills
Coach Brannen shows you 10 practice drills that teach players to become proficient full-court defenders. Four of the drills teach the proper defensive stance and correct lateral movement. Defenders work on that explosive first step and how to cut off the dribble. The Box Drill combines all of the skills into one drill.
The six remaining drills break down the various concepts of Coach Brannen’s pressure defense. The 4-on-4 Full-Court Shell Drill teaches players how to align on the floor, uses stunts, and slow the dribble. The Circle Trap Drill demonstrates how players should trap and how defenders should anticipate the next pass and pick it off.
Half-Court Man-to-Man Defense
What players learn in Coach Brannen’s full-court scheme carries over into the half-court. Defenders learn how to align to take away gaps in the defense. Brannen uses six drills to teach the half-court defense. Players learn additional concepts like stunting, closing out, pressuring with active hands, baseline help, and more. Individual players train to become elite defenders all the while building the foundation of a stellar team defense.
Coach Brannen’s video is for any coach looking to build a championship pressure defense. Rent this match up press defense DVD today.

Basketball Practice Drills from the Pros
Eric Musselman is well-known in basketball coaching circles for his intensity, outstanding basketball IQ, and his ability to turn around programs. He took Nevada to three Mountain West Conference regular season titles, one conference tournament championship, and all the way to the 2018 Sweet Sixteen.
Now, he is doing the same at Arkansas and takes time in this presentation to discuss some of his secrets. The video offers up some of Coach Musselman’s favorite drills to develop players into tough defensive units, efficient shooters, and effective ball handlers.
Warmup Drills
The warmup begins with a series of ball handling moves in the full-court. Four players at once criss-cross down the floor. Then, a second ball is introduced as players use both chest and bounce passes as they slide down the court.
The One More Pass drill was something Musselman got from the San Antonio Spurs. The drill emphasizes making the extra pass to get the defense into multiple rotations. A post player is added to the drill and every player rotates to each spot. Players work on a multitude of skills in one simple drill.
Defensive Basketball Practice Drills
Coach Musselman’s defensive drills not only work fundamentals, but they also are meant to breed toughness. The Czar Closeout drill helps players talk and get active with their hands and feet as they execute closeouts. The Pat Riley Closeout drill is a wrinkle you can add to your closeout technique in the same drill and create different ways to defend shooters on the perimeter.
Shooting and Full-Court Passing Drills
Two drills are presented that work on getting players up and down the floor quickly and shooting while fatigued. The 130 in 3 shooting drill and the Celtic Advance Pass drill both incorporate conditioning into a fast-paced shooting drill.
The Celtic Advanced pass drill is timed and players learn how to make good passes and layups while under pressure. Players are also learning to protect the ball and avoid costly turnovers.
Pick & Roll Defense Drills
The presentation ends with Coach Musselman demonstrating two pick and roll defense drills. Warriors Pick and Roll Defense is an outstanding drill that encompasses all pick and roll defense skills. The Miami drills works on one of today’s big offensive trends – going through the elbow to run the offense.

Concepts & Rules
Coach Knight shares and teaches a number of concepts needed to defeat a zone defense. He shares his philosophy and rules on things like transitioning into zone offense. A speedy transition can be a great first line attack against a zone defense.
He also discusses proper positioning for players that will allow them to best use their strengths. Players are taught to see the court and pass and shot fakes to beat the defense. You will see how Coach Knight likes to work the ball inside against a zone defense with players fighting for position and then catching and observing. Finally, you will see how to create 2-on-1 matchups by penetrating the zone. This results in better scoring opportunities.
Beating the Various Zone Defenses
Coach Knight also breaks down how to beat each of the zone defenses you might see. Against the 2-3 zone for example, Coach Knight emphasizes the shot and pass fakes, the dribble drive, and post movement as these all work to beat it. Beating the 3-2 is different and Knight uses two players out front to occupy three defenders. This gives the three baseline players a numbers advantage. Beating the 1-3-1 zone is similar as Knight shows you effective ways to beat the baseline defender.
You will also see how to beat combination defenses like the Box-and-1 and Triangle-and-2. Coach Knight shows you the limitations of these defenses and how you can exploit them to your advantage. Knight also demonstrates beating the half-court zone trap using your best player in the middle where he/she can attack and score.
In addition to Knight’s philosophy, teaching, and coaching points; you also get an awesome bonus. This DVD contains 30 minutes of game footage that shows you Knight’s zone offense in action against the various defenses he mentions. The film reinforces what Knight teaches and can help you attack any zone defense with confidence.
Mike Hopkins
(Rental)-Creating An Efficient Perimeter Player
$17.99
Creating an Efficient Perimeter Player
Syracuse basketball has produced a number of outstanding perimeter players. University of Washington head coach Mike Hopkins is one of the reasons why. Hopkins, a 20-year-plus assistant to Jim Boeheim at Syracuse, is a master of perimeter basketball play. In this video, Coach Hopkins shares all aspects of perimeter development including increasing speed, improving shooting, and becoming mentally tougher.
Hopkins became the head coach at Washington in 2017 and went 21-13 in his first season. His Huskies won the Pac-12 regular season title in 2018 and Hopkins was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year. He has had a long and successful career in developing perimeter players and he shares his views and insights in this presentation.
Winning the Baseline Drive
Coach Hopkins uses a series of drills to work on the line and angle to the basket when driving to the key. Here, Coach Hopkins teaches players not to fight the defender but to use balance and quickness. The placement of the feet is crucial in beating the defender to the basket. Players also learn to expect and absorb contact while maintaining a strong base. Hopkins prefers the offensive player initiate the contact which helps to improve angles and increase shot percentages. Coach Hopkins also teaches players how to deal with second defenders who will no doubt come into play as the first defender is beaten.
Change of Direction Moves
To teach players to dribble low enough (something they rarely do), Coach Hopkins shows you the Dribble Touch drill series where players must stay low after making a change of direction move. Hopkins also shows you how to deal with defenders that crowd the basketball. He teaches a head-shoulder-leg technique that initiates contact with a defender without drawing a foul. The Walk Up Drill is another in which players learn to separate from defenders and get open on the perimeter.
Dribbling posture is important to Coach Hopkins and he talks about how players are to react when facing defensive pressure on the ball. Hopkins emphasizes drills that work on creating space for the ball handler.
Shooting Endurance
Players must be in great shape to be able to shoot when they are tired. Spurs 100 is an outstanding shooting drill that Coach Hopkins uses at the end of his practices. The drill is a conditioner but also can be modified so that players are taking the same shots they would in a game situation.
Coach Hopkins video will give you a greater appreciation of the skills and fundamentals needed to be a successful perimeter player. With years of experience in developing some of the best in college basketball, Coach Hopkins gives you all of the tools you will need to do the same in your program.
