Perimeter Player Drills - Developing Perimeter Players: Drills for Skills
For ten seasons, Travis Steele served as an assistant coach at Xavier where the Musketeers went to the NCAA tournament eight times. That included a run to the Elite Eight in 2017. Now the head coach at Xavier, Steele shares his secrets to developing perimeter players. Having learned under a variety of successful coaches, Steele shows you how to create an effective individual perimeter player workout.
Culture
During his tenure at Xavier, Coach Steele has been directly involved in helping to create a culture of winning. He understands how to set the tone for players to develop into the best versions of themselves on the court. Having a plan and working within it, Steele has gained the trust of his players who buy into each and every workout and each and every drill. By sticking to the plan, players achieve their goals.
Developing the Perimeter Player Workout
Coach Steele builds an element of competition into his workouts. This helps players set the tone for each other at any given workout. The drills begin with form shooting and continue into a larger shooting warm up. Ball handling is next and then comes triangle shooting where players compete to beat their scores from the previous day’s workout.
The perimeter player drills then shift to shooting on the move and then finish with a teaching segment where players apply their skills in 1-on-1 competitive drills. Doing so has been one of the keys to the success of the Xavier program over the last decade.
Perimeter Player Drills
Commando is a dribbling drill where players learn to handle the ball in tight spaces as they work from the baseline to the elbow and back. The great players are the ones that learn to play in straight lines rather than go to where defenses dictate. The Commando Drill helps players move in straight lines and work on different moves to get around defenders.
The Two-Ball Command Drill works on dribbling on the move. Players use two basketballs instead of one and focus on dribbling with their head up to see the open floor. As they dribble, they are staying alert and ready for a coach’s command.
Coach Steele’s 56-minute video demonstrates his plan and attention to detail when it comes to putting together a workout. Steele’s system of developing perimeter players is based on creating a culture of competition and it works! Rent this perimeter player drills for basketball DVD today.

Developing Players for a Free-Flowing Offensive System
Marshall University head coach Dan D’Antoni is building a winner and is doing so with a commitment to developing players. He led Marshall to its first NCAA tournament bid since 1987 in 2018 and attributes that to his player development. In this video, Coach D’Antoni dives deep into his philosophy of player development.
Player Development Philosophies
For D’Antoni, who is the brother of Houston Rockets coach Mike, player development begins with recruiting the right kids. He likes to recruit high-character kids and then develop them by setting a standard of excellence and by holding them accountable. What D’Antoni believes is important in the development of his players are the following:
Being a positive coach
Refusing to pigeonhole players into predetermined roles
Teaching beyond the fundamentals
A dedication to strength training and conditioning
Development Drills
After discussing his philosophy of player development, D’Antoni then demonstrates a number of drills that can help players expand their talents. It all begins with a warmup where players are challenged to get out of their comfort zone with a variety of difficult finishes at the rim.
The trademark D’Antoni offense is based upon the idea of positionless basketball and the pick and roll. Coach D’Antoni breaks down how to teach the pick and roll starting with a two-man demonstration and then progressing to include movement by other players off the ball.
Coach D’Antoni continues the pick and roll discussion adding how to look for attack angles, how to execute proper roll technique, and how to continue the offense after the initial pick and roll. D’Antoni reviews the pick and roll in a half-court set and when finished goes into how to incorporate the pick and roll into the transition game.
This developing players video takes a holistic approach to improving player performance. It starts with high-character players that give great effort in improving their range of skills. For coaches looking to add some new wrinkles to the development of their players, Coach D’Antoni’s presentation will challenge you. Rent this developing players DVD today.

Through the course of the video, you will see drills that teach proper form and technique for dribbling, shooting, attack the rim, and more. Two-Ball Dribbling to work on concentration and dexterity
One-Hand Form Shooting to teach form, technique, and work on appropriate range
Box Shooting Series teaches players to shoot from a variety of positions
Individual Perimeter Moves
Post players and guards must have a complete game and that includes the ability to get to the rim from the perimeter. Coach Allocco demonstrates:
Using jabs, faints, and fakes to get a defender off balance for a one-second window of opportunity
Using moves like jab and shoot, jab and go, and more to build a catalog of effective moves
Drills like 1-on-1 from half-court, 1-on-1 from the top of the circle, and 1-on-1 from the wing to develop an array of moves
Individual Post Moves
In developing the complete game, posts and guards must learn the hook shot, the jump hook, the drop step move on the baseline, and a turnaround jump shot. Allocco teaches players the “catch, chin, and check it” technique to develop good habits before making post moves.

Adrian Dantley
(Rental)-Developing The Undersized Post Player
$17.99
Post Player Drills - For An Undersized Post Player
Post play is almost a forgotten art these days. In this presentation by former NBA All-Star Adrian Dantley and former NBA assistant coach Barry Hecker, learn how to develop the undersized post player. Dantley was one of the best small forwards to dominate the post. He was just as effective in the post as he was on the wing and most of that can be attributed to his work on the fundamentals of post play.
In this video, Dantley shares a workout for post players that should become a daily routine, in-season as well as in the offseason. They are the same drills that led to his successful career and eventual induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Developing Footwork & Finishing
The workout starts with footwork in the post and progresses to automating finishes close to the basket. The routine ends with techniques for turning athletes into tough scoring machines.
Also included in the video is a segment on the hook shot. It is one of the most underused moves in today’s game, but was the go-to move for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s all-time scoring leader. Dantley demonstrates the move, teaches it, and then shows you how to combine it with other moves to finish at the rim. Even smaller players can use the hook shot to avoid being blocked by taller players.
Fundamental Drills for the Low Post
Dantley then shifts to the low post where he shows you the fundamental drills he used to develop his game. One of the staples is the Mikan Drill, which can help any player be more efficient around the hoop. Dantley also works the drop step another effective way to seal defenders and attack the rim.
During his career, Dantley was a complete player and took defenders to the perimeter. He shares drills and techniques he used there as well. He demonstrates the forward pivot and reverse pivot and how to use the pivot to increase scoring options.
This on-court demonstration comes from one of the game’s all-time greats and is great for motivated young players and coaches who want to develop their post play from the ground up. Rent this post player drills development for the undersized post today.

Brad Underwood
(Rental)-Disrupting Offenses With Pressure Defense
$17.99
Disrupting Offenses with Pressure Defense
Brad Underwood has built a coaching career on pressure defense. The Illinois head coach prefers an on-the-line-up-the-line half-court pressure defense that can stifle opposing offenses. Some of Underwood’s previous teams – Oklahoma State and Stephen F. Austin – have been among the nation’s leaders in steals and turnovers.
In this video, Coach Underwood teaches you the principles of his defense including positioning, maintaining denial, and keeping pressure on the opponent when defending ball screens. Even less skilled athletes can succeed in Underwood’s defense if they play with great technique and toughness.
Basics of On-Ball Defense
The whole goal of Coach Underwood’s pressure defense is to prevent opponents from getting into the offense they want to run. The defense begins by shrinking the floor. Coach Underwood then explains the rules and responsibilities of each player. Defenders are taught when to pick up opponents and how to make them uncomfortable through the entire possession.
Pressure vs. Common Offensive Actions
Coach Underwood shows you how to maintain pressure against the various actions offenses will run. Learn how to move and adjust denial positions every time the ball moves. Coach Underwood breaks down these concepts into 2-on-2, 3-on-3, and 4-on-4 for better understanding.
You will also learn how to deny back cuts, play post defense, and stop dribble penetration by sprinting to midline to play help defense. Coach Underwood will also give you techniques for disrupting screening actions like screen aways, down screens, and baseline screens.
To tie it all together, Coach Underwood shows you his shell drill. Players must communicate, jump to the ball, and sprint to help. There is an emphasis on player movement and “doing work early” to keep pressure on the offense.
Defending Ball Screens
To reduce pressure, the offense will try to use ball screens. Coach Underwood details how his defense attacks ball screens and maintains pressure. You will learn how to trap the dribbler in the corner. You’ll see “X-Action” which helps you defend screeners popping into open space for shots. Coach Underwood also shares his Red, White, and Blue communication system to defend on-ball screens.
Coach Underwood’s video is a complete and total defensive system that any team can use to pressure offenses into making mistakes.

While head coach at NCAA Division II Metro State, Clark led his teams to consecutive conference championships, conference tournament championships, 30-plus-win seasons, and Final Four appearances. His 2013 team was the NCAA Division II runner-up.

Coach Clark begins with a description of his defensive philosophy. That includes controlling tempo, taking opponents out of their comfort zone, and forcing turnovers. Clark’s defensive pressure package includes a variety of man-to-man and zone defenses. He discusses positioning and strategy which includes taking away a primary ball handler, clock/tempo management, and clamping on makes and misses.
Man-to-Man Full-Court Press
The 55 Press, or the man press, is where Coach Clark’s pressing philosophy starts. You will see how Clark adjusts his team’s alignment against “Stack” and “4-Across” press breaks. In a 5-on-5 setting, Coach Clark demonstrates both trapping and the run-and-jump options as well as how to take away a team’s primary ball handler.

2-2-1 Zone Press
Coach Clark reveals two versions of his 2-2-1 zone press. Blue is the passing version which forces opponents to use up time on the clock while breaking it. Red is the aggressive version and looks to create ball pressure and successful traps to create turnovers.
He also discusses “clamping the ball” off a missed shot and shows you how to trap a defensive rebound in an effort to slow down an opponent’s fast break.
Coach Clark’s defense is sure to get opponents out of their normal attack. Apply pressure that can adjust to any press offense and be disruptive all over the court! Rent this full court pressure defense DVD today.
Sharman White

Sharman White: Dissecting Man-to-Man Defenses with a 1-4 Set Plays
Pace Academy (GA) head coach Sharman White provides a number of high percentage scoring opportunities in this presentation. White is well known in Georgia having won six straight Class AAAA state championships from 2009 to 2014. He is a former Georgia State assistant and has won a pair of national high school coach of the year awards.
In this video, Coach White discusses the 1-4 set plays that were a big part of those six straight state titles. You will see a variety of quick hitting plays that can help any team score some easy baskets and maximize possessions.
Duke & Carolina
Coach White starts with the basics. Any good offense is created by proper spacing, solid screens, and attention to detail. Coach White sets up the 1-4 and then describes each position. He then goes into a series of plays that work off of each other to create scoring opportunities.
The base play is Duke, which is centered on getting the ball into the paint using backdoor cuts, post duck-ins, or simply driving to the basket. You will see two other sets in the Duke series, one designed for a lob and another that uses a dribble hand-off for an open drive to the basket.
Carolina is also introduced here. In Carolina, you will see three sets using an Iverson cut, a duck in the post, and a backdoor cut.
1-4 Low
In addition, Coach White offers a few looks from the 1-4 Low set. These looks also create space for players to operate and they are useful against zone defenses. Coach White demonstrates two specific plays that he likes to use at certain times to help change the momentum in a game. Tennessee gives the opportunity for an open 3-pointer and Carolina Two gives the best athlete on the floor a lob pass at the rim.
Coach White breaks down each play very clearly and specifies all the details needed for each play to be successful. Each play can flow in and out of another and can be used versus man or zone defenses. Take Coach White’s knowledge of quick hitters and add it to your playbook to get your players running on all cylinders and your fans going crazy. Rent this 1-4 set plays DVD today.

(Rental)-Dominating 1--3--1 Zone Defense
$15.99
Steve Klass has had an incredible coaching career in Wisconsin and he owes much of his success, in no small part, to his 1-3-1 zone. In this DVD Klass shows how you can use a defense to force the offense into negative situations. The basis of the 1-3-1 is ball pressure and trapping while also providing your players with incredible help side D.
Intro
The 1-3-1 defense is very unique in the fact that it requires a certain type of athlete to play each of the positions in the zone. Coach Klass does a great job of detailing exactly what you should look for in your players. He also touches on the basic five rules that he uses for his teams: stance, watching the eyes of the passer, move when the ball is in the air, look for deflections and aggressively go to the boards. While these rules are not set in stone they offer a tremendous starting point for building your own defense.
Fundamentals of 1-3-1
Coach Klass details the basics that you will need to run this zone with your own program. While the 1-3-1 zone defense looks and seems complicated, Klass shows you how simply this zone can be executed. Coach Klass gives great coaching points that you will need in order for this zone to be successful for you. The basics he shows include how to prevent penetration, traps, and adjusting to screens and unique offensive personnel.
Advanced Adjustments
In its most basic form any defense can be solved. Having multiple options and looks is vital to slow down the modern offense. In the next section of the DVD Coach Klass shows you how to adjust the 1-3-1 to keep the offense guessing. Coach Klass demonstrates the different trapping options available with this defense along with how to extend it into a full or half-court press to force even more turnovers.
Coach Klass finishes the DVD with game footage of his actual teams running the 1-3-1 along with a 3-2 zone that he has been playing with.
