Archie Miller: Off-Season Skill Development
Indiana University head coach Archie Miller guides you through an in-depth workout designed to build skills as well as condition your athletes. Miller formerly the head coach at the University of Dayton where his Flyers won back-to-back Atlantic-10 titles in 2016-17 and advanced the Elite Eight in 2014.
Miller details the strategies and drills he used at Dayton and currently at Indiana to develop players. You will see on-court demonstrations with Miller’s coaching staff. They will take you through a number of drills that you can implement into your off-season program right away. Coach Miller also goes through his offseason plan and how to make sure players are pushed to do their best.
Coach Miller teaches the warmup, ball handling, and shooting drills and also a set of competitive drills that simulate game situations. Miller wants all of his drills – no matter what they are – to be done at game speed. All players learn the following moves from any position on the floor:
- Power layup
- Reverse hook
- Pull up jumper
- Step through
- Reach out layup
- Perimeter-to-post
Coach Miller goes unconventional with his shooting series. It’s not the typical spot shooting drill. Instead, a clock is used to push players to go at game speed. The end result is a tough, challenging shooting workout. Drills include the following:
- Spot Shooting Series – 1-Step & 2-Step
- Spot Shooting Series on the Move
- 3 Men, 2 Balls Drill (shoot 2s, 3s, pullup jumpers, half-court speed pullup jumpers, and line shooting)
The other thing Coach Miller does is chart players’ progress to help them build confidence and hold them accountable. Players will want to improve as they see their numbers after every workout. They will continue to buy into the program as they see their progress.
Coach Miller’s offseason development program is challenging and helps build the skills your players need to be successful.
