Multi-Option Screen & Roll Offense
Northern State University head coach Saul Phillips understands how important the pick and roll is in today’s modern basketball. Phillips honed his offense while at Division I Ohio University and North Dakota State. His Bison teams won two Summit League titles and Phillips was the 2014 league Coach of the Year. In this video, Coach Phillips shares his multiple option screen and roll offense.
Coach Phillips’ system is a great for teams that are constantly playing bigger, more athletic opponents. Teams that like to pressure passing lanes are teams that Phillips loves to attack with his offense. In the video, he starts out explaining the offense from a 2-on-2 setup. He begins by showing three types of ball screens:
- Vertical: Basic flat screen above the three-point line with Phoenix Action
- Standard: Coach Phillips shows you how to read the hedge and what options are available with the screener facing the sideline
- Chip: This is a screen in transition where the screener sets and pops
Next, Phillips shows you how to “pink” and “plus” the screen. These actions counter defensive pressure and weak side help. Then, he gets into options for the screener who can post after rolling or create a mismatch by screening away for a shooter.
Coach Phillips then demonstrates three different sets in his offense – Gold, Open, and Vertical. This is done is a 5-on-0 setting. Coaching points include putting your best players in the best possible positions to make smart decisions. Phillips talks about a number of defensive pressure situations – hard hedges, traps, and switches – and how to defeat them.
This is an outstanding video for teams at any level looking for ways to create mismatches and take down teams that like to apply defensive pressure.
