BasketballCoach.com Presents: 35 Best Shooting Drills
Coaches will always talk about how championships are won on the defensive end, but if your team does not have the ability to shoot and knock down open shots you will have a hard time reaching your goals. This video helps all coaches learn the complete science of shooting for post players and for perimeter players. A variety of drills is presented from some of the best names in the game including Arizona head coach Sean Miller, Kansas head coach Bill Self, and many more.
Warm-Up Drills
Improvement in any basketball skill always begins with a warm up. Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg takes you through the warm up he did as a player starting from when he played youth basketball all the way until his days in the NBA. The drills start close to the basket and move out to work on increasing shooting range.
Former St. Joseph’s head coach Phil Martelli offers a warm up drill that can be done with four players at a basket using two basketballs. The drill includes “game spot” which is an area where the shooters shoot from most often in game situations.
Rick Barry was one of the greatest shooters of all time. He demonstrates the proper fundamentals of shooting the jump shot stressing form and mechanics as well as the concept of shooting “up to the basket.”
Transition Shooting
Shooting on the move is an important skill that Northwestern head coach Chris Collins addresses. He presents a drill that emphasizes footwork and finishing in the paint against contact. The drill progresses to executing a pull-up jumper.
Steve Alford was another great shooter who teaches players to catch and shoot on the move. His drill stresses executing game shots at game speed. Players use tight cuts, pop cuts, and flare cuts to get open and shoot on the move.
Big Man Shooting
A good shooting big man is a luxury. Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo demonstrates the jump hook and Kevin Eastman shares the McHale Drill, a chair drill that works the mid-range jump shot and scoring off of a rebound.
